I wish the STe was the first computer in the ST series! It doesn't get the love it deserves because most people had a plain ST without blitter or audio DMA!

I didn't even know they were different until a few months ago. The improvement is crazy. It's like windows 8 to windows 8.1 levels of improvement
@gwenynorisu68834 жыл бұрын
It could have done with just a few extra improvements to make it better than, rather than still chasing the Amiga (in all areas but clock speed and max sample rate) and thus make it worth the programmers time producing two versions, or adding "enhanced" modes, rather than just going lowest common denominator...
@pweddy14 жыл бұрын
@@gwenynorisu6883 The Tramiels screwed up Atari majorly. They were in negotiations to get the Amiga architecture but Jack was trying to screw the design team over and thus Commodore bought it out from under them! Because Jack was furious he lost the Amiga he force the in house design team to make a 68000 based computer in 6 months. Then they didn't make meaningful updates until they were behind the 8 ball! He was cheap, rude and dishonest. For goodness sakes the XE game system was just a rehashed version of the Atari 8 bit computers almost 10 year later with no meaningful improvements! "Let's slap another coat of paint on it!" They had the ST line but they just reused a 1978 design instead?!?!? What were they even thinking?!?!?
@gwenynorisu68834 жыл бұрын
@@pweddy1 Commodore was doing enough of that as well though. The micro field was still new and no one knew how long you might be able to keep flogging the same platform at successively cheaper prices. And other than on the audio front (presumably they meant to offer upgrade modules that would plug in via midi then, like... Forgot... As well as all that business with AMY being way too ambitious and therefore undeliverable... Though depending on what you want to do there's situations where the YM is slightly better than the Pokey), the ST team did an amazing job bootstrapping a perfectly good computer at such speed. It was basically the second best thing you could get for some things after the Amiga, and better in others, whilst being cheaper and more straightforward to use. Plus only one of them got laptop versions... ;) The bigger issue was the failure to continually upgrade their mainstream offering whilst instead chasing various pie in the sky projects (tablets, supercomputers etc), especially after Commodore (not exactly the best at that sort of thing themselves, but *better*) premiered ECS, Apple released the MacII and LC, PCs with 286s and VGA or at least EGA (and super-EGA clones) came along then became affordable and started offering practical GUIs, etc. They seemed unaware of the middle ground market between the cheap basic offering of the ST and 8-bit consoles, and their fancy expensive top end stuff like the TT, Jaguar or the failed Transputer idea (ironically some of their most vaporous cancelled projects like the TTX, EST or Panther would have filled those gaps), which is what their competitors dominated and that quickly stole the valuable power users who had at first only really had the ST or OCS Amiga to choose from. Maybe they thought the 8-bits were the cheap line, rather than budget trash (maybe not at first but certainly by the late 80s), so the base ST was midrange, but that was only true for a year or two. Like whilst Macs were still medium-low rez monochrome and PCs were laughable but expensive. If only they'd abandoned the 7800 altogether for a 16-bit console, and not heavily nerfed the EST when the extra letter changed ends and went lowercase, they might have held on to those markets. (and the daft thing is, I've been doing thought experiments on these things and it really wouldn't have taken much... Even without sprite hardware or the like, you could have had something reasonable with a 68010 - a little more efficient and capable of virtualisation for swap files or running Unix - or a 68020 in 16-bit mode like the LC, running at 12ish MHz, a couple extra pairs of lines in the cart port to make it much more useful for both ROMs and expansion, one of the SIMM banks capable of 8mb instead of 2 (which is literally one extra PCB trace and controller pin), a Yamaha OPN-A or - B which would have massively improved the audio by adding FM channels whilst retaining a 2149 compatible core (installed maybe with, or maybe without the separate DMAs, as the two chips have certain flavours of PCM and ADPCM decoding - and crucially, Encoding - of their own), and a mildly reworked shifter that could take proper advantage of the 50% extra bandwidth to offer many more video modes with either more colours, more resolution, or a little of each, including a 4-colour VGA variant, mono SVGA, and options for ANSI compatible terminal emulation. All fairly simple, cheap or maybe free, evolutionary updates to the base machine. Maybe the option of a small secondary memory bank dedicated to the AV system that would operate similarly to the Amiga chip memory, so the main bank could be fastRAM... And thus provide full VGA quality, fantastic 15khz graphics, and TT-esque high rez mono without slowdown... Heck seeing as the CPU can already use ROM whilst the video uses RAM, a little bit of architecture finagling could do that via the expanded cart port. Boom. You have a Mac II rival, or at least a cheaper and more flexible alternative to the LC, with barely any more messing about or cost than the actual STe itself, maybe less... And on that basis you can then expand into much higher performance machines - 32 bit bus, 030s and 040s, expansion slots, accelerated video hardware, CD quality sound etc, a bit at a time, always having some new thing to show and the upgrades being neither expensive nor a disruptive platform shift... A bit like what Commodore did. But for some reason they had to reinvent the wheel every time and were therefore left scrambling to catch up with whatever they could cobble together...)

@@pweddy1 Its even worse. Atari initially told their own engineers that they don't want the new platform they were working on, so they left (which caused a massive brain drain) and made the Amiga. This then forced Atari to come up with the ST. Both decent systems in their own right but talking about shooting yourself in the foot.

I am probably a little bit biased but I've watched a few other versions of Bad Apple and I think this is the best one - the amiga(1200), MD & NeoGeo versions don't appear to have the smoothness in grey-scale or frame-rate that the STe version has. Certainly other versions are impressive (the amiga single disk version for one), but this one looks and sounds the best
