Smith was still alive when it was recorded & released so i'm sure he'd heard it. Obviously the original is the definitive version. No one's ever gonna do it like Elliott could because he actually lived the nightmare. i'll give Wes Anderson a solid honorable mention for how he used the song in Royal Tennenbaums(i really do feel like that's an iconic scene that couldn't have had the same impact without this track). But when it comes to covers of 'Needle'(& there are so many), the Bad Astronaut recording is my favorite.
