That weight class was just absolutely loaded for the US in these recent years. Not just Burroughs and Dake but also David Taylor (who moved up to 86 and won multiple world titles) and J'Den Cox at 86 who won there and moved up to 92 and won there too. Burroughs, Dake, and Taylor all in the same US trials is nuts.

Imagine you're in charge of the US wrestling program. Your star is Jordan Burroughs, who by 2013 (the first gauntlet Dake has to run), has been getting it done for the US for a few years now. Beyond Burrough's NCAA career, where he won two championships in 2009 and 2011, he has gotten gold at the 2011 World Championships and 2012 Summer Olympics along with first place at a number of other tournaments along the way. In other words, he's as proven a commodity as there is. Apart from Burroughs, you have a number of very good if not great prospects. Do you take your proven commodity, a man who has won gold for you multiple times on the world stage, and put him through an elimination bracket for the sake of 'fairness'? It's not like Burroughs hasn't faced and beaten these guys in the past. I respect the hell out of Dake, and acknowledge he had an insane road to get to where he is at. Nevertheless, I think US wrestling made the right call to protect one of the best wrestlers in the program's history.

@@iii-ei5cv protecting a guy goes against the most basic ethos of wrestling, it’s a combat sport. Even in HS, the starter has to wrestle off if he’s challenged( and most schools). What you did last year shouldn’t matter, which is why they have WC EVERY year, you’re just assumed to be the best against, you have to prove it on the mat. In fact, at the WC/O, you get no advantage at all, because last year is gone, doesn’t matter any more. Dake was robbed in 2015, and jobbed at the US open in 2017, which forced him into the challenge tourney again, and Dake was inches from unseating him anyway. If it were JB who had to go through MAGIX, Howe, et al, no way he beats a rested Dake 2/3. The whole qualifying process where a wrestler would have to wrestle through an entire challenge tournament and then wrestle the incumbent the same day was absurd. It was all about protecting the incumbents' spot, imposed a direct physical handicap on the challenger and the clear favoritism inevitably affected the referee's calls. The whole point was to make sure the incumbent won. US Wrestling implemented that qualifying process after a few instances where the top US wrestlers internationally were defeated by domestic wrestlers who were very familiar with them and who then got trounced internationally. US Wrestling decided it would not happen again, but it made qualification a farce. Very glad they modified it.

I love flo, so glad they released this video. All due respect to Kyle Dake, incredible wrestler and athlete, but he received byes in national tournaments due to seeding. He understands that to victor goes the advantage. The beauty of wrestling is the adversity. Embrace it. Maybe if he had to wrestle back to 3rd in a national tourney, he'd know that grind. Jordan did, in arguably, the most difficult bracket in nationals history. And followed it up with an unprecedented run where he lost 2 matches (1 due to injury) folk and freestlye from 2008 to 2014. Think about that! Again, Dake is an incredible wrestler, and I hope he continues to be a leader in the sport for many years to come, but the excuses are below him. I have to hate on Flo for a couple simple but decidedly abstract reasons. While It's neat that someone is covering wrestling, finally, as I can remember long before flo when nobody did, but this content has this really preppy kinda...Soccer-y vibe to it. There's something about it that's so sterilized and clean that it's dry and the athlete's feel like they'd be unrelatable to anyone not super deep into the sport. Only the very very veryyyy best are covered, typically, and they are difficult for the layman to relate to. Flo's encapsulation of wrestling is one that has precisely ZERO dirtiness or ugliness, two things that are hallmarks of the sport (or used to be). It's polished up and again, the squeaky clean athletes are covered. Flo makes wrestling feel....nerdy. I guess thats the best way to put it. Maybe it's the perennially safe hosts Flo has covering the sport or the fact that it panders ONLY to people that cover the sport day in/day out, but why not show some other aspects of the sport, too? Is wrestling at the elite level just super nerdy now and I'm imagining things? Why does the content have to be so ridiculously sterile? Just feels weird. Why not spend more time following Thomas Gilman around? That little nutjob is super entertaining and relatable. I knew a ton of oddballs like that guy wrestling in HS and college. Just one example. I am glad Flo exists, don't get me wrong, and I'd take this quality content over no content, it just feels different than the wrestling and wrestlers I grew up with, and they weren't all bums, either. Some of them wrestled at the trials, etc.

My takeaway: Dake got robbed several times.

"Ready for, whatever challenge this guy presents. He's gotta wrestle a few matches before he even gets to me, but I'll be ready. That's it." - J.B. I think JB tells the truth here unwittingly. He's fully cognizant of the advantage not having to wrestle beforehand gave him. He wouldn't have brought it up otherwise.
@desmundlighten36033 жыл бұрын
He has an advantage because he is the reigning us champion that’s how this works in individual sports look at tennis and any other rankings driven brackets if the rolls were fillpped and it was dake brining home golds it would be JB having to make it through the gauntlet
@KAR5AVATARGT2 жыл бұрын
@@desmundlighten3603 exactly im tired of the excuses hes the champion thats how its ranked you have to wrestle to get to the champion if it was that bias Jordan wouldn't have to Qualify for the world team every year

I get how much more difficult it is to wrestle a tournament when the defending champ doesn’t, but isn’t that the case for everyone? Including Burroughs before he won? It may be unfair but everyone has to go through it

Weird how this is called bad blood Dake Burroughs, when it should be called Pyle simping for Kyle Dake every possible chance without telling any of the other side of the story.

Mad respect to Kyle dake for finally going through the gauntlet what mental fortitude. But Jesus this feels like a Kyle dake production. So much spin painting oh poor Kyle he would be the best if it wasn’t for the system…nothing to do with JB being great…where is the love for your champion who won worlds with a broke ankle? What about the mental fortitude to dominate for the better part of a decade?

Who’s here after Dake beat Jordan 2-0?!? Despite Having to wrestle through murderers row, he STILL took Jordan in 2. Congrats to Dake, a great way to settle the rivalry with a victory and showing his class & sportsmanship after the match.

I don’t think Dake ever got any better as a wrestler. I think his strength and stamina improved but his wrestling was obviously not technical enough to prevent an 11-0 tech fall in Tokyo. Burroughs has always been the more technical wrestler.
