Okay, my method for getting rid of books is anything I feel "meh" about goes unless it's part of a series. I only keep the books that bring me joy (a Mario Kondo references, so original I know 😂). Mostly, if it's not one that I feel like I'll reread, it's first on the chopping block on the rare occasion that I do an unhaul. (I don't have books showing up unannounced at this point in my life, so I tend to only get books that I've read and loved, hence the scarcity of unhauls.)

As a sentimental person myself, I know the struggle hahahah my trick is getting all the books I know I should get rid of but can’t out of the bookshelf. So I bag them(to protect my babies -don’t misunderstand me I mean the books) and put them in a closet or something. I leave them there until I don’t miss them on the shelves anymore at which point they’re already bagged so I just have to take them to the closest donation place 🤷♀️

This "bookshelf clear out" is actually super relatable. It's so hard to part with a book. Sometimes I ask myself "Why am I keeping this book?" and that usually is my answer.
@Artis_Tales5 жыл бұрын
For the book that you are keeping mainly because of the cover, since it's a hardback, you can keep the dust jacket and give away the book. Since you mentioned 'spark joy' and not knowing what it is, what I gather from it is that when you hold a book, you ask yourself "do I want to carry this with me into the future?" "Can I learn more from this?" "Would someone else enjoy it and put it to use instead" and those types of questions. That may not be exactly what Marie means by it but it's what I have taken from her show on Netflix. I unhaul books often but I understand being sentimental about them, as all book lovers should be. Thanks for the upload and being your energetic, chill self!

The library is your friend! Every time I go through my shelves, I look at each book and think, "I could just borrow you from the library if I want to read you (again)." If you don’t, they can go. If you think it about them constantly, then they can stay. Hope this helps xx

honestly, part of why i started to use Goodreads was to keep track of the ones that made me like them on the first/second/etc read. 4-5 stars can stay on my shelves. 3 stars, I can waffle about because like... it's dependent on whether or not I feel they have sentimental/rereadability/classic. 1-2 stars? GET GONE. it's hard to separate out feelings, but part of the Konmari method is that you pull ALL OF YOUR BOOKS FROM THEIR PLACE. this is 1) so you can see the books outside of something organized (i.e. shelf placement/aesthetics) and 2) so you have to face the amount of books you DO have and go forward accordingly. Another thing about the Konmari method is that you pick each book up, hold them in your hand, and think hard about how you feel about it. 1) does it spark joy? i.e. do you feel excited to read it? would you buy this book if you didn't already have it? do you feel like you would read it again? is it sentimental? (sentimental things go last), 2) if you're leaning toward "meh" feelings, consider: why are you "meh"? is it because the story didn't hit you in a place you wanted to be hit? is it because the handling of the narrative wasn't to your expectations? is it because it just wasn't a good read for you?, and 3) if you're leaning toward "bye" feelings, consider: someone else may like this book more than you and you can assist that book to getting somewhere someone who will LOVE IT and CHERISH IT rather than keep it on a shelf to gather dust. one thing Konmari also says is that if you feel sentimental about something but it's something you're ready to part with but are reluctant to because of the sentimental reason: take a picture that encapsulates why it's sentimental for you. And then move on. let someone else have a chance to love that book. tl;dr don't be afraid to let things go. always remember: there's plenty of book nerds out there with different tastes than you. and even if something wasn't to your taste, that doesn't make it a bad book. let someone else love that book. that book may actually belong to someone else and it's your goal to make sure that book is loved.

My whole goal of developing a library is having something to pass down to my kids, if I ever have kids. So everything I keep, I think to myself: "Is this something I could actively recommend to someone else and feel good about it?" When I'm on the fence about donating a book, I think about the fact that someone else will come across the book, love it, and give it a better home than I can. I get that it's hard to let go, but if the book isn't getting any use with you, you might as well donate it to a library so some person can discover magic in the book that maybe didn't work for you! Plus, you're contributing to a good cause that benefits your neighborhood!

This is just like me trying to unhaul my books. I go through this debate every time. As for the book that has a cover you really like, keep the cover if it can be removed. Then frame it or make some art piece with it and get rid of the book. If the cover can't be removed make a photocopy or just take a picture of it, (I've done this myself with book covers and completed puzzles) that way you have a memory of it, but the book itself need not take up space on your shelf.

Here is my personal book unhauling philosophy: If I’m not going to reread it, it’s gone. I understand how beautiful covers are a trap to keep books you didn’t love or like. I find myself wanting to buy “Wicked Saints” because of the cover but I didn’t love the book. However, you have to let them go otherwise, where else are you going to put books you’ll actually reread?
@kaylacook15225 жыл бұрын
Hey Jesse, I'm also trying to clear some space on my shelves and this is what i've come up with (partly with the spark's joy method). If you like the cover but not the book, make a photo copy of the cover and hang it up somewhere, then you'll still have the cover art and can get rid of the book. As for the ones you're not sure about, pull them off the shelf and set them on a table or just to the side. If you still feel you need them after a few months, keep. If not, donate. And finally, start by picking up one of your favorite books, something that excites you. That's Mari Kondo's "spark joy" feeling. Then hold one of the books you absolutely hated. That's the other end of the spectrum. When you hold the books you aren't sure about, think about where they fall on that spectrum and discard the ones on the lower end. Just a few tricks i've been using.

The real suspense of this video is whether you would actually manage to get rid of any! 😂 You know, I think it would help you a lot to use that thought process you had about other people enjoying a book that you didn’t feel strongly about. Maybe if you could find somewhere good to donate them, you would feel more inspired to get rid of books that you liked but don’t need to keep. Also! If you’re worried you may want to reread any of them in the future, just tell yourself you can always get them at the library! Good luck! 💜

Oh you did amazing. 3 books doesn't seem much but if u pull out 3 books each month you'll eventually have a bunch of place for new books. So do this clean out each month!! Love u the most

Lol I totally understand the need to clear out “bad” books! Usually books that have been given to me or I got for dirt cheap. Gotta make room for new and better stuff! ... Wait... you mean it isn’t normal to talk and refer to books as friends?... 😂 I do the same thing This is my first of your videos and you are so much fun to watch.

My dog (beagle) ripped apart my arc of The German Heiress today. It was my first arc and I cried a little :(

Maggie Wetzel Oh no!!!! I feel your pain. I still have my first ARC, I’d hate to lose it. Dogs can be like that sometimes. But you can’t stay mad at them forever, right? (Also you could purchase the finished copy of your first ARC if it would make you feel better)

Every time I watch your vids I feel inspired to read my books. 😆 even if I just finished a book or am in the middle of a book. Also. Makes me wanna buy books.

I couldn't quite see my self intentionally get rid of books but did have to leave books behind during the move, but I was able to get a few of them which was my first book when I became a reader and a few I haven't read that look interesting since then I have gotten really good ones.

Good luck with your books ! I can't get rid of them if they are on the bookshelves, so I always take them off (all of them, in the same time), and then 60 books go on to a new life 🤷♀️
