I remember Bad Brains played a reunion show in Chicago about 10 or 11 years ago but the Bad Brains post their break up are not the same. The set was mostly Rhasta and they played a few of the Punk favorites but H.R. isn't really the same man anymore and his heart isnt into the Punk/Hardcore music anymore. I totally get growing up and evolving but Bad Brains literally invented Hardcore.

Hi! It's good to see the younger generation exploring timeless and influential bands, like The Brains. The instrumental piece before I Against I is called Intro. If you liked this, check out a track called Voyage to Infinity, from their album called The Quickness. They reused the bones of Intro for this track. Maybe you've already heard it.

Bad Brains! Nice! Bad Brains are a hardcore punk band originally from Washington D.C. and formed in 1977. They have a very eclectic sound mixing hardcore punk with reggae, heavy metal, and pretty much everything else under the sun. They are one my personal favorites and I hope you continue to check them out. I recommend: How Low can a Punk Get? Leaving Babylon Hired Gun

Bad brains started as a jazz outfit and got into more aggressive punk. They are the text book definition of hardcore punk. They are also one of the most influential bands in metal/punk/rock today influencing every facet of the music. These guys have also been fighting for equality hardcore since the 70s and their lyrics are often directed at failures of authority and ones own moral standing.

I think the short answer to "What subgenre of Rock is this?" is "The set of all bands who have single songs that spawn entire subgenres." I wish "Re-Ignition" had gotten the radio play it deserved. To this day I play that song for people for the first time, just to watch the new neural pathways burn in. It's so rhythmically surprising, playful and light on its feet that its sheer heaviness doesn't hit you until Dr. No rams that amp right in your ear with that solo. "Oh sweet baby cheeses, I didn't realize that groove is carved in my brain for eternity! PLAY IT AGAIN!"

Bad Brains rock!!! One of the most influential bands within the punk scene, I am rather disappointed that I failed to see them the few times when I had a chance. However, I have seen the lead singer, H.R.'s subsequent band, H.R. (Human Rights), who were more of a reggae band, but when they played, they seem to play forever. I saw them perform at Reggae Sunsplash one year, headliner act, last band, and I think they played for almost three hours, and saw them again as the headliner at The Cubby Bear bar in Chicago, and they must have played for over two hours there. An incredibly talented, and rocking, band opened for them called Trenchmouth, whose lead singer, Damon Locks, I had a short conversation with after I caught them playing at a venue in St. Louis. I had mentioned seeing them when they opened up for H.R. in Chicago, along with the fact that they play incredibly long sets. The one thing about the band that Damon mentioned to me was that they smoked a retardedly insane amount of weed, and they could not keep; up with them . . . and he mentioned that that was the highest he had ever been for a live performance. If you are not already familiar, I would recommend checking out some older material by a band called Fishbone! Almost any track off of their album "In Your Face" would be decent. I would recommend: When Problems Arise kzbin.info/www/bejne/b3TbZYqnlNWaqpo A Selection kzbin.info/www/bejne/jpzEXoR-rsSerqs Cholly kzbin.info/www/bejne/n3zJaGt8iMd9grc I Wish I Had A Date kzbin.info/www/bejne/mKiVqp19i9igmZI "Simon Says" The Kingpin kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXKTqZyNh66Vask

People are calling them one of the Pioneers of American Hardcore Punk but they are more than that. They are the CREATORS of Hardcore. They didnt just create the sound, they laid the foundation of the ethos of Hardcore. Vegan/Vegetarianism and Straight Edge were pioneered by other bands but it all started with that PMA! They were Jazz Musicians who heard the Dead Boys and fell in love with Punk Rock but decided they would play it louder, faster and instead of being nihilistic they would promote a higher level of consciousness and positive mental attitude. They are one of the most important Punk Bands of all time, being one of the first Black Punk bands is an achievement that's overshadowed by their other accomplishment of creating a new subgenre (Hardcore) and changing the sound and mentality associated with Punk. They are to Hardcore what Chuck Berry is to Rock and Roll. Nobody ever says Chuck Berry was the first Black Rock and Roll musician because he's the FIRST EVER Rock and Roll musician! Chuck Berry invented Rock and Roll, he is the real King.

In the early punk days in NYC, Punk and Hip Hop crossed over. Beastie Boys were originally a Hardcore band that eventually switched to Hip Hop because the scenes started intersecting. They seen eachother as both being part of the underground and outside of the mainstream. Hardcore kids were big into Graffiti Writing which was birthed from Hip Hop. When I was 16 I moved from the Southside of Chicago to the suburbs. I was into Hip Hop, I had turntables and was a Graffiti writer and was big into A Tribe Called Quest, KRS-ONE, De La Soul, Digable Planets etc. The kids in the suburbs that I made friends with were Punk Rock kids. A lot of what made me fall in love with Hip Hop was what made me fall in love with Punk Rock. I eventually moved more towards Punk Rock but Hip Hop is what made me see art as more than just a form of entertainment.

Death definitely influenced HR's singing in Bad Brains and their sound. I argue Bad Brains pioneered that hardcore punk and metal hybrid that became Grunge. Listen to Re Ignition and tell me that Nirvana's "In Bloom" doesn't take inspiration. Also Rage Against the Machine had people of color and was post-hardcore and metal sounds but with rapping. Zack's earlier band Inside Out was hardcore punk for sure. Thin Lizzy also had a Black frontman. Also "Pure Hell", a band from Philly were all Black. Also "McRad" had Chuck Treece.

One of the best...yet most violent...shows I ever went to was Bad Brains at Iguanas in Tijuana somewhere around '89. Daddy Long Legs opened for them which I think was HR's younger brothers band. I remember seeing some "preppy" looking girls on the 2nd belcony (when I left the pit to check on some friends) and they said they didn't like the music but were there to watch the fights. I am from the "punks shows are actually friendly and not violent crowd) but I make exceptions for the shows I went to at Iguanas in TJ.

There were a punk band out of DC. 1977 to the Early 80s. The best black punk band ever. Seen them back in the day. Incredible
