Black man here. I watched SNL as a kid. In my household SNL was on every Saturday night. It was basically tradition. My mom loved it when she was young, and by the time I could talk, I could recite "Live from New York, it's Saturday Night!!!) I remember when Norm was a newbie to the cast. Before him it was Kevin Nealon. Norm was different. VERY different. His style was something no one had really seen. His jokes were very direct. It wasn't politically correct. Which was (and always should be) a staple of comedy. I remember black jokes, gay jokes, jew jokes, sexist jokes, anti-religion, Basically if you had a race, preference or a belief system, Norm would come and shit on it. Not out of hate, but for comedy. It's a way to laugh at yourself and not take everything so personally or seriously. If you know anything about Norm, you would know for certain that the man was FAR from a racist. In fact part of his shtick was to expose racists. Listen to some of his interviews. Norm's style wasn't for everyone. But true fans of comedy know the man was a genius. R.I.P Norm. Norm is my favorite comedian ever, not just because of his comedy but just by how genuine the man was. Absolute legend. And gents, not only is their more great Norm MacDonald material out there, the is probably enough 'risky joke' material for a part two. Another one you could do is a compilation of his OJ Simpson jokes. His late-night appearances were all legendary as well. One of my favorite things about him is that he would intentionally get on stage with the sole intent to bomb all night, then go to the exit and personally tell all people in attendance 'good night, hope you enjoyed the show'. Who does that?!
@SDesWriter Жыл бұрын
I'd say do the Clinton jokes first....although since it is a commentary show run by black man the OJ thing might have a better hook. But either way, those were his favorite two subjects and he was absolutely savage about them. He lost his job due to them and his boss being pissed because he was friends with them. Norm refused to stop (probably amped it up) and he was gone. The show was never funny again.

I think the more you watch of his extremely unique style of comedy, the more you'd get the jist of what he's doing in these. It's not just the words. Despite his success and how revered he is by other comics, there has always been a huge swath of people who never really 'got' the very brilliant bits he did. They hear the words and don't notice the very very very intentional subtleties to what he's doing. I think his "12min joke" is a good way to gauge if (a) you understand his unique style & (b) if you really do like it or not. This vid prob wasn't the best intro to him.

The reason the guys on the podcast were dying laughing as soon as Norm mentioned Hucklberry Finn was because they all knew Norm was setting up a punch line. Him acting like he's talking about a serious topic is part of his humor and then last second he drops the punch line and makes you realize he was joking the entire time. That was his method so those who knew his style would burst outlaughing just from the setup... Was one of the amazing things about Norm.

Norm gave zero effs, he purposely tried to piss off his networks. He was fired from SNL because the priducers told him not to make jokes about OJ Simpson, so he started making even more jokes about OJ Simpson until they fired him. The roast you were referring to where he was terrible, he took the check and purposely told the corniest jokes to get back at the networks who black balled him. Nearly every other comedian talks about how much Norm made them laugh which tells you something about him.
@SDesWriter Жыл бұрын
That's because they knew him personally so understood the subtext of the joke he was telling. More often than not, there were real reasons he was telling those specific jokes and knowing the subtext made them infinitely funnier.

Norm Macdonald as you know died of cancer. Now, he didn't tell anyone he had cancer. But he DID make a lot of jokes about people dying of cancer during his last 10 -15 years or so... I didn't even know he was sick.." - So Norm ends up dying of cancer, and all of his comedian friends unwittingly say "I didnt even know he was sick" because they honestly didn't. That wasn't an accident, Norm PLANNED that out. Norm played a fucking joke from beyond the grave on thousands of people on purpose. That's the kind of comedian you're dealing with. nearly all these went straight over thier heads. I'm sure Norm would have a joke about racial stereotypes about that.

Lol “black flakes” you guys came up with a new word for the people who watch this video and think Norm is racist. You guys respect and embrace the comedy even though it’s obscure. I like how you all discuss and critique videos in the end. Keep it up!

Norm is THE GOAT. Anything he ever said about anything or anyone all came from the idea of comedy. He didn't have one hateful bone in his body, God rest his soul.
