Man, you have my whole respect when it comes to discussing the broader fandom's expectations for cgi in shows and how they always compare it on ufotable. Mappa's cgi has perfected the ACTUAL blending of cgi and 2d, which is insane and outstanding by Japanese anime standards. Ufotable contains an uncanny valley where you can tell if a character is CG or not. However, mappa has managed to combine the two. Simply pausing a frame of one of their works may make the cgi appear to be a totally 2d artwork, we can thank their experience and usage of different techniques.

@@wind1574 Yes, you both are right. If you have a trained eye, you can spot most of the cg in any anime. The difference is that most anime you can tell it's cg, even when the character design on the show is simple enough to be confunded with cg, and Chainsaw Man has A LOT of shots that you just can't tell if it's CG or not. It's to the point where people see CG where it doesn't even exist, because they just want to criticize the anime to get attention. I can watch any anime and tell the scenes that are cg and the scenes that aren't, but this just doesn't happen with Chainsaw Man most of the time. It's undoubtly the next gen anime.

I think the point why nobody is saying that ufotable uses CGI in Fate and Demon Slayer is that it look really really good and is about the best in the industries I would say. ufotable is not without a reason my favorite Animation studio of all time. Love there works but even ufotable has sometimes flaws with there CGI. The more funnier thing is that a lot of people are saying how good MAPPA animated CSM and how god tier it is, but without the knowledge that 90% of the animation was done by freelancer.

@tater8960 Yeah, I know this. There are a lot of freelancers that are working on shows. Nevertheless, ufotable uses less much of freelancers than MAPPA or other studios. Their entire 3DCI departement is done in-house. Look at the Demon Slayer season 3 show. 80% of it was done in-house. Their even used much less help from other studios, and it has much less outsourcing than season 2 had.

@@xenzzyyx2164 excatly what im saying. ufotable is an exception. u are literally discrediting every single studio outside of ufotable when u say "this studio isnt even good its just freelancers". yes my friend, we all know that freelancers are the ones who make practically every sakuga moment for shows except in ufotables case (and even in their case they sometimes use sfreelancers like with hironori tanakas cut with matsuri). but the point is that u should not completely discredit the studio since they are the ones who have connections with freelancers and call them up to work on their projects. the more connections you have the more freelancers you can employ for cuts.
@xenzzyyx2164
@xenzzyyx2164 Жыл бұрын
@tater8960 I agree with you, bro. I didn't have any intentions to discredit the work of the freelancers. Sorry if I said it in a weird way. My point was that many people are saying MAPPA as a studio is the best without the knowledge that 90% of MAPPA's shows are made by freelancers because the studio itself has very good connections to the veteran animators. Like other studios, too. Look at A-1. The studio itself didn't do the work mostly (maybe the CGI because MAPPA has now a in-house CG studio, but a lot of it is still outsourced). The freelancers should get the credit, not the studio itself. People need to understand that fact. This was my point. I hope you get it how I meant it. ufotable, on the other hand, does a lot of the animation in-house as well, but uses outsourcing if it is needed, and even the outsourcing is not that much. Yes, ufotable have freelancers like Nozomu Abe, and I don't deny this fact. But it is also true that the freelancers are much less used as in other productions from other studios. Also, the staff is treated way better than in other studios. Kyoto Animation is as well a good example of good working conditions, and the productions are done in-house as well and even more than ufotable.

The transition between 2d and 3d is quite impressively done here in this first episode through smart editing choices, brillant camera work, and snappy scene transitions, and I only expect things to get even better as we venture into further episodes. Can't wait for some of the Hironori Tanaka cuts we saw in later PV's. Been very much aware of the fact that the adaptation was going to integrate CG into its animation ever since the first PV dropped over a year ago and noticed that the Chainsaw Model had a CG head composited on top a 2d animated frame, which I thought worked there and also worked in the later PV's. *Correction: The chainsaw head in the PV is NOT CG; it's just really a well-animated sequence using complex modeling; holy shit!* Some things to note: Yoshihara's cut where Denji is running through the Zombie horde I'm pretty sure is not a CG head on top of the body. Like you said, one of the giveaways are the detail in the pipe tubes that make Chainsaw Man's neck, but also I noticed the linework sort of morph, indicating the handdrawn touch. The moment where Denji begins slicing through the Zombie devil' intestine as if sliding along it starts with Denji's model in 2d; however, the moment he exits the blood spray effect, his body emerges as the 3D model as Denji continues to plummet towards Zombie. The transition to 3D isn't as he's falling, but upon exiting the blood. You can tell by the rendered outlines of his body. I could be wrong but upon closer look, the evidence seems to support it. The fact that your eyes (and perhaps even mine) can still be fooled by the blend just goes to show how well the animation is handling this synergy. I've always said this: in the same way live-action needs to do a better job marrying practical and CGI effects to achieve a feasible yet immersive production, anime should aim to do the same if it's hell-bent on using CGI in animation. Chainsaw Man might be the beginning in discovering the answer to making CGI models synergize with handdrawn animation. Rather than abandon it the way western animation has been doing with films, anime can work on merging the artstyles if that's what's necessary to keep 2D art alive while being able to make "high-budget" productions attainable. Great vid

Thoroughly enjoyed watching this entire video from the start to finish, the breakdown of CGI was especially well thought out and nuanced. To think we may get a breakdown for each episode has me really excited as you're way of reviewing is engaging and fulfilling to watch. Still amazed that some people found the CGI unbearable or completely detracting from the show, I even saw some people go as far as to stretch their points into confusing various Character Acting scenes as CGI or fully rotoscoped because they were "Too good" or "Too weird". Moreover when the episode first released a lot online took Tatsuya Yoshihara's run cut and Fujimoto's chainsaw cuts as CGI too because of their movement. It feels like a lot of the stuff people are putting out is reactionary and forced in opposition to Chainsaw Man.

I am really surprised the CG is such a shock to so many people. I guess people are expecting a flawless adaption on every front because it's chainsaw man. Full 2D, without any compromises and all that. But idk, MAPPA uses CG quite a bit, and they are adapting something where the main character has 3 chainsaws running at all times while running around fighting devils. CG was inevitable. The only reason something like Mob Psycho can get away with beautiful 2D animation at all times is because the source material is very simple to adapt, and they just went all out with that. So yeah, when I saw the zombie devil fight I was just impressed with what they were able to pull off. I thought it had some of the better CG I have seen in anime. It is certainly no Berserk 2016, and I have seen more jarring CG in Wit's AOT. So if this is what we can expect going forward, I'll be very happy. And I am a huge chainsaw man fan.

As much as I agree with most of your takes and appreciate all the insight you give into this industry, I feel like the problem is you don't understand how people feel about the CGI. That first episode 1 scene looks bad to me and many people. It simply looks off. I'm not trying to say you shouldn't think it's great, you can have your own opinion on the matter and that's perfectly fine, art is a subjective matter, but I simply cannot agree that this is good looking or even "good CGI". That does not warrant any hate for the CM team, but I believe it's entirely valid to criticize this aspect of the show.

It has been so long since there has been a premiere which I can give 10/10. There is just something so intriguing about the entire aesthetic and feel of Chainsaw Man's first episode. Like, it's actually rather cartoonish. The storyboard, how the events line up, etc. remind me a lot of comicbook stories and ofc it has absurd concepts as well, but instead of delving into this cartoonish vibe more Nakayama tried to make it like live action - to make it feel alive. And god, it worked so well. Because even if it has cartoonish elements, it's executed so perfectly that it feels alive and realistic. And that makes the overall aesthetic and feel of this show so far unlike anything I've seen so far. It's at the exact border between animation and live action and it boggles me how good it is. Ofc, everything else is perfect too. But there is too much to unpack in this episode anyways. Your analysis showed that - Godly character acting everywhere. I expected CSM to impress me the most with its action, to have such high level character animation all the time caught me off guard. There is so much else to unpack, like the OP, but you already did that wonderfully. What the fuck was this premiere, seriously. I watched it 3 times within 24h + OP and full theme song on loop + rewatching particular scenes over and over.

I've pretty much re-watched the whole episode frame-by-frame and I still found new stuff while recording, and even now there are cool details in the OP that I'll have to talk about in the next episode's video. Also Nakayama's boards are so unique; the character art in the storyboards look almost like genga without the shading. I guess that's what happens when an action animator draws the storyboards.

@@-MankoMan IKR? I thought about posting a staff overview or some short review talking about the production of the episode but there is just so much to unpack. I may even do it later but holy... I was also surprised how good Nakayama's boards are. It's cool to see how much the final product still resembles his boards, and while not being that detailed they're very easy to understand and have a good flow. I wonder how much corrections he did as episode director, probably not much with the staff being this stacked. I hope we'll see some KA from him too in the following episodes, but he's killing it as episode director for sure.

Either people just don't watch critically or they're just so stubborn to change their minds about the usage of CGI in anime if it's done well. I got downvoted on reddit to hell just because I remarked about how great the transition between 2d and 3d were in this episode. It's baffling how anime fans think they know how animation work without looking into it at all and just are so confidently wrong with what they say. I should move my animation discussion to this channel lol. One thing that I'm interested in is what happened at Mappa that this show was given so much time (it seems atleast) while we all know the awful conditions they had in the past, you also said that this episode was done on very good conditions so I'm interested in what changed.

Pretty much what Carlos said. I talk about studio-production committee dynamics in the first half of this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/npTHl5WAn9eVnZI Shows like God of highschool and even JJK had no right to look as good as they did; they were entirely carried by director Sunghoo Park and his connections. Damn, somebody pointed out that most action anime is devoid of character acting. Everybody talking about the CGI in CSM and I was sakugasming all over the character animations. And I also went on to analyze the action sequence and it just disappointed me that a lot of people could not recognize how much of it was phenomenal 2D animation. They did not cut corners with animation and direction. They did 2D as much as possible. Great analysis! I always think, if you can find someone who can nonchalantly animate a slow CSM head turn and I can tell you this animator one of the OGs like Inoue-sensei. Unfortunately, he's a genius and we are but mere monkeys in terms of consistent animation. Also, the more people think it's mostly 3D, the more I think they did a good job in mixing them between cuts and in the same cuts. Like, I'm honestly blown away by how much of the zombies they animated in 2D. They did a lot more than I expected.

Dude,loved this video,your passion for animation shows through every second! As someone who's not really a sakugahead, I'm glad I got to learn so many little details about the premiere of one of my favourite mangas ever. The amount of talented people working on the first episode alone is insane,truly. I'm glad a lot of people are actually being reasonable about the CGI,given how impressive it is all throught. So many jumped to the conclusion that the chainsaw man form was gonna be all 3D,when it was CLEARLY not the case if you had just watched the trailers for the upcoming fights! And even when it IS 3D,it really is seamlessly mixed with 2D...honestly not even that last "janky" cut of Denji looking around and killing the zombies took me out of the scene,which just speaks of how good the "mediocre" parts are! I'm glad that any of the worries I had before the series started were put to rest. If there is one thing that DID look kinda weird for me,I'd probably go with the way the actual chainsaws are animated in that first shot of Denji coming out of the zombie pile; I think they said they simulated their movement by overlapping two different models,or something along those lines,and it does end up looking a bit stiff,so it dampens the reveal a tad,but that's really nitpicking an otherwise masterful 20+ episode. Since you've never read chainsaw man before,hope you're read for an incredible journey! I honestly can't wait to see how MAPPA will bring their A game for the stuff that will be covered in season 2 or the movie,because Fujimoto's ride only rises in spectacle,emotional climaxes and highly detailed artwork as it goes on.

Really amazing first episode. My only very small problem is the cgi of the chainsaw man, not the head or the chainsaws since those look amazing, but the human parts feel a little out of place in some scenes but everything else still looks godlike. Also it is possible to make all that detail in the manga 2d but they either have to pull a shitty record of ragnarok and make it a slide show which is worst then cgi, or spend 8 or more years animating everything 😅🤣. Over all this ep was a great start to chainsaw man.

Pros- OP is the most beautiful piece of cinematography, lighting and vibes I've seen since The Batman. The SFX, soundtrack and VA work is just... mwah. A true auditory experience. Denji speaks to me on a personal level, especially when he talks about what he wants before he dies; I love how while he obviously wants booba, he also just wants a happy relationship with someone who cares for him at the same time. Very wholesome, and quite tragic. This show feels more like an action-horror-thriller than an average shonen, especially in its bleak color palette. Me likey. Gripes- Wish we spent more time with Denji and Pochita pre-Chainsaw transformation. Yes, I know, the manga didn't either, but I was left wanting more at the end of this episode, especially since it seems this is the last we'll be seeing of this (nutless) version of Denji. While this episode had alot of blood, I was disappointed to see that there was a lack of gore. E.g. : With Denji's corpse, I wish that they had shown his entrails, maybe chunks of flesh bitten out of his face and limbs, you get the idea. Instead, his body was just cut up. Thas all.

Idk if you’ve read the manga, but there are some later fights with a LOT of guts. I won’t spoil when, but I can recall multiple instances of denji having been cut or blown in half and his entrails are hanging out, stuff like that.

IMO, it's a matter of first and last impressions. Because the fist and last sequence of Denji's chainsaw form uses the CG model, the CG sticks to memory more easily. And since the blending between 2D and 3D is done so well, it makes people think the scene is mostly 3D. It's a misture of perception and memory bias, these quirks of the human mind are generally used in art and marketing to make a strong impression.

if you ever wanna nerd out about a group that made incredibly stylized 3d animation work like 2d animation, and you haven't already, look at guilty gear xrd/strive/all of arcsys' 3d games after xrd. They pretty much custom designed insanely complex 3d models with an unreal number of bones that can can be stretched and distorted in ways that look like proper smear frames, all so they can use them for animations in a fighting game (which is key because for a fighting game, the upfront time of designing these models allows them to forgo the nightmare of needing to rebalance moves later in development, where a 2d sprite game would either have an animation that doesn't make much sense for the hitbox, or need to be redrawn, potentially several times).

I just think that the first reveal of him in his chainsaw devil form should have just been full 2D. The wires in his neck just looked so bad in that shot, like you pointed out. That, and the one other "jank" scene you pointed out. The rest of the series so far has been great blending 2D and 3D.

I was already blown away by this anime adaptation of one of my favorite manga, but your analysis pointed out stuff I didn’t even notice initially, AND IM BLOWN AWAY AGAIN! My only hope is that the folks that animated this show get a well deserved rest after giving us such a fantastic work of art. The working conditions at Mappa are apparently abysmal according to a French article that interviewed some of the animators there. Which sadly is common across a LOT of animation studios in Japan and is a systemic problem. Kind of a bummer to bring up, I know. But I truly believe this anime is going to be a game changer for anime, and I hope and PRAY the treatment of staff can reflect that. Without spoilers, all I’ll say is Chainsaw Man is a perfect blend of horror and melancholy, but also goofy humor and pure joy. We’re in for a wild ride.

Just found your vid and this is an excellent breakdown. It kind of goes to show how much of an impression the same variables everyone has tuned into effects their perspective. Everyone noticed the same small handful of stills that popped out as less impressive than others, yet some choose to shrug it off as a minor dip in quality while others it made or broke the whole episode. For me, I remain in absolute awe at the overall quality, but for the big main event I was really hoping for something a little different. Specifically Denji's body as the chainsaw man, Mappa had a gorgeously detailed body not even a scene before the reveal, but consciously chose to use a slightly stiffer CGI body for the reveal and for when Denji dropped from the steel beam, and then for when he flew at the zombie devil, and then for getting hugged by Makima. As a result, the neck wires not digging into his flesh were waaaay to noticeable, and the blood splatters on his body looked less like splats and more like finger paint. It seemed to limit the motion in certain frames where his muscles just didnt flex like 2D animation depicts, whereas in certain others literally a moment later we have sick motion blurs of him zooming around swinging his arms like pool noodles, and if you do that people will notice without even having to squint their eyes. Without a doubt this episode is a whole study on excellent movement animation, but at the same time gives its own examples of how the canyon sized difference that less than perfect compares. It's all in the muscle sakuga, and as amazing as it was, flipping the top half of Denji's body with 2D and 3D made the lack of muscle movement really stand out and reduce the potential weight of some of those chainsaw swings or the kinetic movement of him launching into the air at the zombie devil.

Almost every shot was beautiful and maybe there was 10 shots out of the whole episode that didn’t look great. Heck, even saintitchief basically said it was a good adaptation. Yet people are saying it’s a mid and giving it a 6.5 out of 10 for the adaptation. And some people were saying they would drop the show already🤦‍♂️ based on this episode.Some people just don’t deserve anime, they especially don’t deserve a show like this.

One opening that i hold close to my heart to this day is the Naruto Shippuuden OP 8: Diver. Then, from the top of my head Mob I / II comes around and AoT S4 Pt2. I really had fun with that one AoT ED 2, because back then (last February) i was consuming AoT for the first time and immediately knew that this ED was made to completely cut it apart and theorize about what was and what might come. In terms of ED's... one that like is, again, from Shippuuden: ED 20, "By my Side". Nowadays i have a harder time remembering ED's that left a specific impact on me, because there's just so much.
