One of my biggest issues with the original show (based on the cast recording) is that is seems to be championing a really dated perspective of feminism. It's very much giving "I'm not like other girls" and (like you mentioned) putting down all the other women in the show. It was disappointing to hear that they've kept many of those lyrics in the single already. Based on the marketing, the music, and the lyrics, this show feels like it would've done much better 20 years ago, had it come out on the heels of something like Wicked. It's also interesting to see how the spray painting reveal ("I'm your BAD Cinderella") is already becoming a meme on tiktok; it's finally getting its tiktok clout, just maybe not in the way they imagined. I'm curious to see if they'll lean into that campiness or run from it.

Having seen it, I can confirm it gives that impression in person too. If they hadn't marketed it as a feminist retelling, it maybe wouldn't have been so jarring (though still problematic).

Yeah, it's like they wrote a show to teach us all a really simple lesson that we already learned 25 years ago and have well moved on from. Its intent is preachy and its message is outdated. And that is sad, because the cast that I saw were all really talented and doing the best they could, but the material really screwed them over.

You are so right!!!!! Like women are so brilliant and like when we work together and actually support and lift each other up we can achieve such great things. I would love more stories that were more realistic about female relationships. I have so many females around me who are so diverse and we all have different talents and something to bring to the table. It's not realistic to split females into "girls" and "not like other girls". Its actually quite an immature perspective. Reminds me of school. I left school and like catty experiences with girls like that became infrequent and in real life like the majority of people actually support you when your not being treated fairly and maybe someone is being a bit catty.

I actually just listened to “Bad Cinderella” for the first time and holy shit I’m surprised the Rodgers and Hammerstein estates are letting him get away with the melodic similarities to “In My Own Little Corner”. I guess it must be barely under the copyright limit. They have to do some sort of stunt casting to even HOPE of treading above water financially this Broadway season. It’s been dire. Linedy is more of an up-and-comer than a household name, or even a theater nerd name. The “I’m-not-like-other-girls” brand of feminism in this show is really outdated. It may have worked in the early 2000s, but it doesn’t really work now.

I was so excited to hear your thoughts on this. The whole thing just leaves a bad taste in my mouth what with how quickly they’ve done the transfer, not leaving any time for the dust to settle from ALW’s awful treatment of the west end cast! You’ve got to think.. the poor old west end cast watching the news and realising that even though they spoke up about his mistreatment, because he is rich and white he can just carry on like nothing happened which is quite frankly appalling… and the cast that were meant to take over as well! No time to tell them the show was closing but enough time to pull together a ‘changed’ broadway version… I wish the broadway cast nothing but the best, but I honestly feel for the west end cast so much who did SUCH a good job with what they were handed, and had to stand on stage with none of the creative team on closing night and hear that their best efforts were a ‘costly mistake’.. like dude… let. The. Dust. Settle. His lack of care for the west end cast just becomes more and more blatant with each new Cinderella move he makes. They deserved better because it was the cast that carried the show, and each other through everything. They shouldn’t have had to go through all of that and now have to watch him drop them *so quickly* to move on to something ‘fresher’. But this is no fault of the broadway cast, of course and I wish them luck. But the west end cast deserved better. It’s like watching an abusive ex that dumped YOU move on with someone new far too soon. It’s icky.

Being in the industry, I can honestly say that Sir Andrew is pretty much reviled as a person. Evita and Superstar are admired, and Phantom although successful was made fun of by actors. Andrews's treatment of actors from Patty Lupone on down has been horrific and so he is not well liked in or out of the industry
@callalily3994

In terms of ALW's reputation in the US, I think he's mostly thought of as commercially successful but not really artistically successful -- like, when I was a teenager in the nineties, there was already a gatekeeping sort of "Your favorite show is Phantom/Cats? Obviously not a *real* theatre fan" thing going on -- those were "tourist shows," which was the highest insult. (Joseph and JCS were OK, though I think we mostly thought of Joseph as a show for kids. We only vaguely remembered Starlight Express as "That was weird, right?") I've also noticed that the US doesn't really have an ALW fanbase of the sort that I've seen from a few UK accounts on Twitter -- the sort of, "How DARE you say anything bad about him?!?!" vibe. Like, there are people here who love Phantom, but I haven't seen that sort of fandom around him personally.
@callalily3994
@callalily3994 2 жыл бұрын
And on "barking mad," we don't really use that phrase much in the US, though I'd assume most people would understand what it means (though I've been wrong on assumptions like that before.) I do know at least two Americans who listened to CHF's version and, between the phrase being not quite as familiar and her accent mostly eliminating the R sound, they thought she was saying "fucking mad." Ab Fab is kind of a cult hit here -- there are people who know it and love it, but I don't think it's well-known enough for people to immediately realize, "Oh, that's what that's referencing."
@callalily3994
@callalily3994 2 жыл бұрын
Also, the "I'm not ya Cinderella -- I'm ya BAD Cinderella" and the spray-painting at the press conference really seemed like stereotypes of how "urban youth" talk from like 1994. She had to be internally wincing so much delivering those lines that way. Kind of fits with the "Obscenely wealthy elderly white man tries to connect with what he thinks The Youth Of Today want to watch" vibe that I've been getting from a lot of stuff related to this show.

There’s a lot about this show that makes me go 😬, and while I don’t want to be a pessimist, I don’t foresee it doing well on Broadway. Tourist usually go for the well known shows (Phantom, Wicked, Hamilton , etc.), the ones with big name stars (Music Man, Funny Girl, etc.), or the ones based on things they already like (MJ, Moulin Rouge, anything Disney, etc.). ALW ‘s association with this production will have a minimal impact on sales to tourists and locals alike. Those who live locally and/or have more of appreciation for Broadway are going to be the ppl who are this first and make the decision to hype it up or shut it down. Also the Imperial is a smaller Broadway theater (the last production there was Ain’t too Proud), so the staging, set, choreography, etc. is going to need to be changed (which I don’t think is going to be in this show’s favor). Broadway like the West End is in a bit of an economic crisis (right now there is an unusual amount of black marquise in the theater district) so if the show struggled in London, IDK why ALW thinks it will do better in NY (especially when this show does not have any tourist drawn compared to other shows currently on or coming to Broadway in the next 6 months).

It’s really a bunch of annoying changes. The title song doesn’t sound very well: From a compositional standpoint, the new lyrics for “Bad Cinderella” sound dumbed down and prosodically awkward. It’s a really disappointing downgrade from the quality words and poetry used in the London version. As far as I am concerned, the London version is thus more valid. It’s just a better song. They removed what must’ve basically been perceived as “Anglicisms” that Americans wouldn’t understand, but that’s dumb. We speak English-we know what the word “catty” means. Also, “barking mad” is not a phrase we use, but we totally understand it.

I think my biggest issue with the musical is that the conflict just boils down to an "everything would be solved in two seconds if they just talked" kind of thing. They'd really have to do a huge overhaul of the story to make it have more impact, which I doubt ALW would do. I just hope he treats the US cast better than then UK one when this inevitably gets at least a few bad reviews.

I really know nothing about the show beyond listening to the cast recording once, but the casting of the lead strikes me as entirely in tune with the whole vibe I get from the show. It seems to be the musical theatre embodiment of the "I'm not like other girls" trope. A conventionally attractive girl is mildly rebellious or unimpressed with society, so she is THE WEIRD GIRL who is just SO CRAZY. It feels like this show could have worked 30 years ago, but today... And I'm sorry but if your actual name is Cinderella then "Bad Cinderella" is the most underwhelming and uninspired attempt at a (mean) nickname I can possibly imagine. Everything about this show just seems so cringeworthy! ALW is the "how do you do, fellow kids" meme personified.

First I NEED a reaction video to the new Into The Woods Broadway cast recording because it's amazing. Now as far as Bad Cinderella goes the new lyrics in the verses don't bother me that much (it feels like it was done to make it less British which makes sense) HOWEVER the repeating chorus that just feels like a weird wink to Defying Gravity is a bit more baffling unless she's going to start climbing buildings in the staging of the song or something. The new color scheme could work if they really lean into the punk/rebel aspect with the marketing & new additions/changes to the show itself. Hell I'd change the setting of Belleville to be more urban & modernize it a bit to push the "wrong side of the tracks" graffiti is all over the part she lives in to start with. As far as casting goes I just want a good diverse cast with maybe an unknown as the Prince. This could end up being a huge mess but I'm here for the ride.

Just based on the London Soundtrack for ALW's Cinderella, it could go over well here. It's a VERY ALW show - that was the first reaction that my wife had upon listening to the soundtrack on KZbin's official channel a few months back, and both her parents have done ALW shows over their careers. If the things you mention are addressed, and if certain songs are sped up, it'll be catchier. It's going to get buzz because of the timing (do you get tickets for one of Phantom's final nights, or Bad Cinderella's opening nights?), but I'm not sure otherwise. I think if it toured, I'd try and nab tickets, but going all the way up to NYC for it... I mean, maybe if we can snag closing Phantom tickets? It would depend on the prices. I hate how poorly the cast and crew in London were treated, though.

It sometimes it actually makes you think "well if she's ugly what am I?" I know that's not a healthy thought but it is a thought and it is difficult that it sort of seems to be being reinforced. I think it would be so nice to have a lady that was different and maybe not what society would traditionally assume was beautiful playing the lead role and being able to overcome obstacles based on her being fabulous and something other than "gorgeous". Like I feel that would be more inspiring. I don't know.

Barking mad isn’t a phrase used often in the States but it’s not like we don’t know what it means. I find it weird how many shows are rewriting their scores to get rid of the Britishisms, especially when it’s something very small and cosmetic.

Which other shows have done that? The only one I know of is Six (where the changes were fairly small, but I think most of them were necessary). Are there others? (I know that Legally Blonde did it in the other direction -- changed a bunch of American references when they went to the UK.)

I took a minute to listen to the song before commenting and… good god. How did they make her even more self-centered? It was already my biggest problem with the show, but removing the plexiglass houses line makes what was a bit of a commentary on society more about flipping off every individual she sees. And then there’s the “flying high in the sky” bit. I didn’t like it once in the West End version and now it’s in the Broadway version 3 or 4 times??? I’ll withhold some judgement until we see more of the cast at least (extremely worried we won’t see another brown face in the main cast), but I am right now rating Bad Cinderella as “get the popcorn, this is gonna be a train wreck.

I think the dress of the original West End logo is also supposed to look like a W for Webber. And now it’s an A in the word BAD. So it makes sense that they would like to keep the letter concept. And I’m familiar with the artist’s other work, and this concept of using it as a letter seems very intentional.

I was saying to my sister that I hope one day plus size actors are standardly cast in major lead roles where their size isn't even mentioned, it's just a physical fact unworthy of notice like if someone was short or tall. I'm fat and would really like to play a lead in a local theatre production (if I passed the audition obviously!) but I don't think I'll ever be able to at this size which is depressing. I was the nurse in a high school production of Romeo & Juliet and had a great time but I'd have loved to be Juliet, even at 14 knew I never could be though which sucked.

The lyric changes seem to have no logic to me... and now it keeps saying that she's flying high in the sky. I also notice that they continue to rhyme a word with itself which is something I noticed a lot in the show (see and see in "when you see that I can see through you"). With how the West End production (cast, crew, front of house, everyone) were treated, I just hope that things go better on broadway.

The name change too could be for the Americans who know who Carrie Hope Fletcher is. She was really big in the 2010s on youtube. If you type in "bad cinderella" you get an image of her singing the song. A lot of people have not heard about the bad things that happened to the show (unless they are SUPER into theater). All old Carrie Hope Fletcher fans will see is her and Andrew Lloyd Weber and assume it's all good.

Just watch it flop on Broadway. I live in Brooklyn, saw a poster for “Bad Cinderella”, and it looked so tacky. Andrew Lloyd Webber is not that popular with American audiences. His shows play better with foreign tourists, especially those who English is not their first language. After all, it was an American review trashed this show.

I saw Whistle Down the Wind in London (1996 or so) and left during intermission. I was surprised that an ALW show was so bad (to me). So it makes sense that a lot of his flops aren't crossing the pond. As for AbFab, I think gays of a certain age will get the reference, but I'm not sure if younger generations would get it.

As much as the role might be right for her I’d be really surprised if Colleen was doing this. She’s currently running her own very tightly booked Miranda tour right now and because of her kids and her desire to be away from them for as little time as possible she’s going back and forth from city to home for almost every tour location or at most from weekends and then home. That wouldn’t be possible if she were in a Broadway run. They’d all have to move and she’d have to change or postpone or even cancel her tour and considering she just announced a large number of the dates and locations for 2023 I beyond doubt it

The new lyrics for “Bad Cinderella” are so repetitive! It’s one of the only good songs from the show and it now just seems to be about Cinderella ‘flying high in the sky’ over and over again? Not a fan of the new version but I can see why they had to update some of the lyrics for an American audience. I also agree that they could’ve been a bit more adventurous with the casting of Cinderella. Someone who is visually a lot different from the rest of the characters would make more sense when the whole focus of the show is on standards of beauty and behaviour

OMG that is exactly what he did to LND title song. He had a good song " The Heart Is Slow to Learn" introduced by no less than Kiri Te Kanewa and he replaced it with utterly insipid lyrics thag repeat the words Love Never Dies over and over. When ALW tries to improve something he usually makes it worse.

I’m encouraged by the fact that he’s writing new songs but I find the new lyrics to Bad Cinderella a bit clunky and the “flying above you” metaphor is very cliche. I didn’t see it in London but from listening to the cast recording I found a lot of the “funny” lyrics to be not very.

Lol. Andrew Lloyd Webber has always taken pieces of melodies from other works. The end of "Think of me" was taken almost entirely from the end of an actual opera song (I can't remember the opera - I found it in a coloratura KZbin search so it must be a popular one). Honestly, I think almost all of that score was stolen. There was a piece of a song from School of Rock that was taken from an 80's rock band; I think it was AC/DC or Aerosmith or something similar- again, not an obscure group. I wouldn't be surprised to find more than these 3 (including Cinderella) examples. I have to re-watch the other Webber shows I know, Jesus Christ Superstar and Cats, to see if they have stolen melodies too. He's usually not the worst at hiding it but it's not odd for him to steal melodies. At least with Phantom it could be genuinely read as genuine artistic omage (I can't spell) given the entire musical is stylistically an omage to opera (leaving the book he was adapting to the wayside unfortunately).
