Glad you survived! Ive rescued a dozen people after they tried to use(and popped) an inflatable paddleboard or kayak in the area where I fish thats packed with oyster beds, and when I see someone blowing one up at the launch I always warn them and tell them they are asking for trouble but they never listen lol

I’ve paddled that River, and it can be a bit scary. Never considered using an inflatable though. If you ever get up the courage to paddle with alligators again, consider Myakka State Park down near Bradenton. But, for the premium adventure, get there an hour before the gates open. You’ll be in a line of other visitors trying to nab one of 30 daily permits for the WILD side of the park! You either walk a couple hours or paddle a couple hours into the remote section of the park until you come upon DEEP HOLE, a sinkhole at the river’s edge that is often lined with well over 100 alligators! I’ve walked this once and kayaked it twice. Quite an experience.

Wow! That is great information. I've actually never heard of that place. We're going to be heading back to Florida next winter so definitely going to try to get one of those limited permits. I'm putting it on my Google maps right now as a reminder.
@Thfeyhvfdetyhbvcd
@Thfeyhvfdetyhbvcd 2 жыл бұрын
BTW, those permits are first come, first served. No reservations accepted. And that’s 30 TOTAL, hiking and paddling combined. On busy days, they’re all taken within 30 minutes of the park opening.

4:38. Fellow inflatable kayaker here. No, you never paddle through water vegetation with an inflatable. Especially when there are gators. Way too much chance of hidden hazards under vegetation. Your glasses might be polarized. Polarized glasses are a must for inflatable kayaking, so you can see into the water. On the smart side, going when it's cold is good. Alligators can't digest food if they're 70 degrees or less. They get passive when it's cold. Snakes, too, are lethargic. That's the time to explore remote areas. From about May to September inflatable kayakers in Florida should stick to smaller lakes with houses.

Frank you are absolutely correct. It was a really scary situation and I need to do better research before acting. I had known that tour companies did kayaking tours on the withlacoochee little did. I've heard that generally gators won't bother you but, like you said, it was a remote section of the river. And, your kayak is inflatable. I've got an inflatable and hard paddleboard but fear taking my inflatable places with possible hostile water life, or too shallow water where the bottom could be punctured. Great workout tho!

However the lady that we bought our kayak from sent me a message with some very helpful info about where she has kayaked before so I thought this might be helpful as some of them are in areas not too far from where you are going to be. "Lithia springs is nice for kayaking but it goes into the Alafia river. I love weedon island in st Pete. Has to be high tide to get into the mangroves and the tunnels are pretty narrow in some spots. But still beautiful area to hike and kayak. Kings landing in Apopka shouldn’t be missed. The current is only a bit strong in two spots but it’s shallow and you could probably walk through it. Thanks for the river segment guidance. Sounds like something I would do - "That looks nice. Let's see what it's like." and go. BUT a question please. I am going to start traveling this fall and looking into an inflatable kayak since I don't want my canoe and kayak on the roof while I am hiking, etc. What did you consider the inflatable kayak a mistake? Or was the "inflatable' just in there for drama? And do you have suggestions on an inflatable kayak, please. The Intek is being highly reviewed, but it looks like a tub. Price is nice, but it looks really slow. And it is advertised for fishing which sounds tubby. (For comparison I have an Arluk sea kayak and a Curtis Lady Bug solo canoe which is really fast - and commensurately unstable if not under motion.) Thanks for any advice you can give me.

Thanks so much for watching my adventure and I really appreciate you taking the time to comment too. Michelle and I both had hard shell kayaks before we hit the road. Like you mentioned the thought of traveling with them longterm was really not an option so we are with you on that. Regarding the inflatable kayak, honestly it's perfect for the rv lifestyle. Yes the mistake was not the kayak persee, it was more kayaking in gator waters #1 and #2 the inflatable part just make it more nerve wracking. I know exactly what Intek you are looking at, I had that one in our amazon cart for a long while. Yes it gets good reviews but I also know that Eric over at Nomadic Fanatic had one and it did not last very long before he started having issues. I would probably stear away from that unless the money is a really limiting factor. We LOVE our Advanced Elements and would highly recommend them. I know they have a new one out that Marc Guido over at Grand Adventure just did a really nice review on. Sea Eagle also has a great one the has drop stitching and our friends have that and it is super nice. Hope this helps. Hello Wandering Shores, I've lived near this river for 20 yrs. One thing you have to be sure of is there are things in that river that want you for a snack. You were in an area of the Fla Corridor which is an area of swamps and woodlands which spans the whole length of the state. From the everglades to the panhandle. In addition ...you can trust what I'm telling you.....there are things in these swamps that are not recognized by science. I know this for a fact and this is just a point of fact. Nothing more than a fact. Trust me on this. You could have ended up as a missing going out there alone and I was glad to see you made it safe and sound. Also strongly consider getting ride of the blow up kayak , You seem to be an intelligent individual who loves being out in nature which this state has a lot to offer in that respect. Just don't do it alone ever again . But learn from this mistake as I have in the past. So good luck to you and I hope you enjoy the natural wild lands and don't be discouraged by this hair raising experience . Just consider it to be an unforgettable experience and learn from it. Oh yes just one more piece of advise....always take some form of protection which can take out a bear of puma if they are coming at you with serious intent . But in most cases they want zero contact with humans and are more afraid of you than you are of them. And again....there is always going to be an exception to that rule. Be prepared in the event.

I have that same kayak and I'm staying the hell out of the swamp with it 😜 I don't think gator teeth and inflatables are a good mix! Thanks for sharing this adventure though! Men doing manly things don't always work out but we gotta do 'em. It's in our DNA.

Ain't that the truth, now that I've had a few months to think back about it it sure was a lot of fun though it was scary as hell when it was going on. I'm going to stick two lakes and preferably in places where there are no gators. Thanks for watching Glad you found it entertaining. In the words of Tim the Toolman Taylor grunt grunt

thanks for sharing now I understand why you didn't return and go back I understand the river branched and you sort of hit a dead end you basically essentially missed a turn. by the way I might have missed the bad experience with the gator what happened you got pretty close and got spooked you came close to a big boy let me know about that personal experience that scared you thank you

Yes you're right about the split in the river and ending up at a dead end where it just merged into the swamp and there was really no definitive river left. Yes I didn't have a camera out too much when I was paddling through the Gator area but they were swimming underneath the boat and one of them hit his tail or back on the bottom of the boat. That water was probably only about two or three feet deep at best and they were jumping in all over the place.

Thank you for the detail response that doesn't happen very often I'm pretty sure I'm quite sure but that must have been really scary having those gators all over your boat or essentially very close to your boat wow very active and they were very agitated I guess thanks again be safe

I know what you are saying... when I look back it was a very bad idea. Michelle has made it clear that that will be the last adventure like that. But at least it made for an entertaining video... 8)

why didn't you just turn around and go back from where you came from and how did you get to dry land why didn't you just stay on the river.
@thewanderingshores
@thewanderingshores 2 жыл бұрын
I had actually thought about turning around, however some of the areas that I had paddled through. I had to cross a bunch of marshland with sticks and little water dams and I didn't really want to paddle back that direction and have to go over those again. Turns out there was a split in the river and I went left and apparently I should have gone right. The river then disappeared into the swamp and that's how I ended up on dry land. At that point I had no idea where the River would have started again and after the experience I had with all the Gators I just decided I've been safer on land walking.
