There have always been an appreciation of bad art, like MST3K, and that must apply to games as well. I definitely think AVGN did spark the modern appreciation of bad games. I think he did it as a counter point to nostalgia, which was idolizing that period a bit too much so it was satisfying to see someone pointing out just how bad those generations could be.
@GamesAndMoreGamesAndMoreGames8 жыл бұрын
James Rolfe almost single handedly made playing bad NES games "cool". Not so much for other game consoles but he did for NES, lets be real. Ian down plays that fact quite a bit. But who was doing this publicly before James? Not anyone I can remember at least.

What you dont understand is when we were kids renting or buying games was a big deal, even renting a game you were stuck with it for a weekend. When we rented complete garbage like "Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde" that is what we had, there is no laughing when you get screwed.

A question to Action 52-owners in the U.S.: When I had Action 52, (my second game ever :/) when I booted up the "game", the "lights" screen used to flicker to grey, and like the first half-second of the song looped for like 10 seconds before the music started proper. It very much looked like the game wasn't going to work, but after those few seconds apeshittin', it started just fine.. Does it do that on NTSC Nintendos too, or was it because of my PAL-machine? I mean the cart was not optimized in any way when it was exported to PAL areas I think.

I think the fact that many ppl might enjoy quote unquote "Bad" games is because of a combination of two things. One, the fact that back then we had no way of knowing whether a game was going to be good or not before we bought it. All we had was Nintendo Power and word of mouth. Second, is just pure Nostalgia. All of us who grew up in that era bought a bad game or three during our time with the NES, simply because we didn't know any better, or maybe because the game was cheaper than the others on the shelf at the time. And being the naive young children we were, and the fact that we probably couldn't afford 100+ NES games, we had to play some of these bad games and we enjoyed them, and now we go back to them with some sense of Nostalgia simply because we enjoyed them as kids. Those two things probably attribute to some ppl having fond memories for bad NES games.

Bad games can help cleanse your proverbial game palette so that you can appreciate good game design I think. Recently I've played a lot of critically acclaimed games like Metal Gear Solid V and Witcher 3 and I kinda got into a sort of tunnel-vision playing through them, not really thinking about smelling the roses and taking in their small but subtle qualities. Then I tried Resident Evil 6 and Deus Ex: the Fall (gotten through Humble Bundles) and spent a couple of hours hating every second of them and when I jumped back into the previously mentioned games I went "huh, look at all the small cool things they do" so I think that a real stinker every now and then can be useful.

Pro Wrestling for the NES is an example of a crap game that me and my friends recently enjoyed for maybe 5 minutes simply due to the humor factor. We got an absolute kick out of the fact that we both just kept kicking the air, trying to hit each other but couldn't. We ended up laughing our asses off at how we both just ended up in a mad air kicking match the whole time playing it. We had no clue how to play the game, we just popped it in and played, and after like 5 minutes we both agreed that it was complete crap and shut it off, but we still had a good time with it.

While I did play NES as a kid, I didn't grow up with it like I did with something like the N64 (I was born in 1991). There's one game on that system (one series actually) that was terrible, but everyone enjoyed playing it. That was Cruisin' USA! It had only so-so graphics, annoying as fuck music, mediocre gameplay, and not so exciting tracks. Why did I keep renting it as a kid??

My first Famiclone came with a bunch of games; Ghostbusters, Super Pitfall and Predator were included. I remember playing to the Death those games during the week because I had nothing else to play since I'd beaten the good ones I had (Super Mario Bros, Contra, Megaman etc) and didn't have anything on rental. Found (and frustrating) memories rose when AVGN covered these games. And, of course, laughter :)

@marktubes34198 жыл бұрын
I've always like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Even before AVGN. The game's pixel art is fantastic and the main music isn't bad. The game play doesn't really suck but could use some improvement such as bug fixes and little quirks like the cane is only useful on the bee and unfair enemies. The game comes off as something that had to be released unfinished but would have been, at the very least, an okay game if given more time.

Some games are just so bad, they're paradoxically entertaining. Although some of the games AVGN reviewed aren't as bad as he makes them out to be. I mean, I like Mega Man X5 and think it's decent. TMNT1 for the NES was pretty fun. And Castlevania 2, while it does suck as a sequel, isn't the worst thing in the world when you have a map handy. It's redeemable at least.

Mega Man Legends, he at least made the Anchovies comparison which makes a lot of sense.

I bought Friday the 13th a month ago or so (mainly because of the AVGN review and the more recent James and Mike Monday's video). I ended up liking it quite a lot and after a few tries I was actually able to beat it. My retro guy claims the opposite. He can't sell some games because James in his AVGN episodes called them shit. Of course he's not alone casing this. The good games on the other hand.
