Brutal, but fair. My LP Stage II is the only synth I've never even thought of getting rid of, but it definitely has its limitations. Still, when you need a thick bass or lead tone that completely hogs the mix and cuts through everything around it, the LP is a killer.

I've had one of the early Tributes for like 15+ yrs now. It's good for taking to jams. Especially funky jams. Yeah, the main problem in studio is trying to use it for everything in a track, so as an 'only analog synth' for novices it's rather nutters and limited/frustrating once the 'wow I have a Moog!' feeling levels off.

Exactly. I have it routed thru an Avalon U5 and it kills bass. That's all I use it for. Menu diving for the arpeggiator?? Yeah... no way. I haven't had any issue with the rubber deteriorating. I had the CV/Gate Out mod added at the factory... makes a killer 5U controller thanks to the big "Output On/Off" button.

I don't know if this was the intended audience when these were designed, but I remember when they came out, tour musicians were ALL about these. For rock bands playing out live who wanted Moog leads, but the ability to save and recall patches, and something sturdy and built like a tank...... These were a godsend.

The thing thats unusual about Little Phattys is that the oscillator level has a big impact on tone and how the envelopes behave. It will also affect how much overdrive occurs. If you keep the osc level low the envelopes have a more pronouced effect and everything behaves in a more predictable way. On other Moogs and most other synths this is not something you really have to consider as much. Most people just crank the osc level and then find this one awkward to mix or oddly untweakable. Its similar to how the VCA level affects the envelopes on Yamaha CS synths

Wow. I never expected to see a Moog slayed in this series. I own two pieces of analog gear: a Juno-60 and a Little Phatty. While I certainly agree with the limitations and frustrating elements of its design (particularly the need to dive into menus often), man does it sound good to me. I'm not sure how anyone can hear the recordings you made in this video and not feel like, despite its quirks, this thing makes incredible sound.

@@AudioPilz I recently bought a phatty off reverb… in toxic green lighting too, 1of 30 ever made. It took some getting used to the controls, but immediately I saw it was far simpler to use than my SUB 25. It took a bit of tweaking and understanding the menu toggle on the phatty , but once I did, I was able to find a solid baseline to start patching with. And after some more tweaking… boom… I found exactly what I was looking for in terms of a lead synth sound The little phatty blows the SUB 25 and 37s doors all day. Re the tuning, maybe Bob Moog wanted to cater for the people with old 435Hz pianos lol. (Don’t even mention the 432 lot tho) Jam 1 had a nice smooth vibe! I hummed along with and correctly predicted the key changes, but that’s actually good for that vibe I’d say. Not sure if the visuals for Anti-Gravity Upsidaisium Retro Sci-fi Psychedelic Soul Space Funk were already overly digitally sharpened like that when you got them or if those were one of the effects you applied, but that hurt my eyes lol

I like Moog, but I don't think it's a bad thing you put their synths on the show occasionally. I don't know if the Little Phatty is considered bad gear, but nothing is perfect. There must be some flaws. Personally I don't like the UI with the rubber buttons instead of the pods the later Sub's have. Still I remember this as a lesser episode. Looking at it again it isn't as bad as I remember. I don't like the first 2 jams, especially the second one. Too dissonant with the combination of unconventional harmonies, the weird effects, the synth goes out of tune too much, the mix is too cluttered and seems unbalanced. The third jam is great and the intro tune worked out as well. You can put Moog gear in your episodes anytime as far as I'm concerned. Wonder which one you will pick first.

I'm just surprised that so many actually ended up on here, and it really seems like most of the complaints are either from people not really understanding the equipment (DFAM, even the Mother32 to an extent) or a good instrument that just happens to have some flaws with things not directly related to producing sound (Little Fatty, Spectravox)

Hello Audio Pilz, can you please tell me, which Synthesizer(s) were used in the "space funk"-part😋? By the way: 3 Oscillators of my Vermona PerFOURmer MK II through the DOEPFER Oberheim SEM-FILTER cover a lot of classic minimoog-sounds. Even my Jupiter-4 can do some minimoog-Sounds, which I found by "happy little accidents". And both closer (100% or very nearby) than many modern moogs or clones!!! Why? Especially in the beginning in the 70ies EVERY company wanted to sound like moog. Oberheim SEM was designed to be an expander for the minimoog!!! I strongly recommend to add eurorack to EVERY studio. Don't fear the rabbit-hole. Imagine, what you get with only one small row. A very flexible 2-Oscillator-Mono-Synth. Add a second row and you already have a Swiss army knife. Enough to explore, you don't need more! In my personal opinion DOEPFER delivers top build quality combined with high-class-sound. Both together hard to find at all. You get a wide sound-palette from Vintage to modern precision. I personally recommend a "mostly-doepfer" Systems (minimum 75%). Try Mixers and VCAs (both totally underrated types of modules!!!) from other companies in order to get more different Sound-Colors.

It is a very cool underrated synth, with a fantastic basic sound. I use it on stage as a replacement of my MiniMoog which I keep in my studio. Compared to for instance a Sub37 it has a far brighter sound. Sub37 is great for bass, but with lead sounds, the Little Phatty is much smoother in sound. Of course... all a matter of taste. I replaced the sticky side panels today with Walnote panels and if I would improve this synth, the only thing I would do is add a 2nd modulation target option. With Sync sounds it is cool to use the Envelope to change the pitch of the synced oscillator. But for this, you have to keep the Mod.Wheel open and then there is no way to use the LFO for pitch modulation by using the ModWheel. But taking the MiniMoog in mind, this one offers preset memory and some additional features. Is it fully sounding the same as my MiniMoog? No... but it is getting very close, and in the music hard to hear the difference. My2Cent

Yup, I've got 2 Minitaurs (and a Little Phatty). I wouldn't part with any of them. I keep trying to swap at least one of the Minitaurs with a Sirin, but that stupid thing's price has just gone ridiculous. I got both Minitaurs each for less than a quarter what Sirin is going for.

Now I've seen everything: A mid priced moog gets covered by Bad Gear 😄. Guys put down the pitchforks, Florian has a point there (luv the politically incorrect name though). At the end of the day it's all about the poles isn't it? Fat and smooth sound as moousual... Looking forward to the next video 👍

Overpriced and underwhelming, imho. You could get an SE-1X in near mint condition for less, with zero menu diving, a lot more banks, and farty fatness for days. A MonoPoly, original or Mehringer, would also tick most of the useable thwubby bass boxes. It has a few sweet spots, but not enough to trigger my dopamine valve. The mere fact that the BadGearMoby Jams were kinda short, and notsofunkyaswe'reusedto is a tell. Trade it for a few more TB3s and stack them until Thanos appears and begs you to stop.

Love the video Florian. While the Stage II didn't come with it, there was also a CV Out mod that Moog would sell you (one of the models came with the modification installed, I beleive). I had the Stage II as well, and ordered the CV Out Mod for, if I remember correctly, around $100 (in 2012). It came with a new panel for the right side of the unit, and was mostly connecting wire harnesses- not too difficult. It had 5 CV outs- Gate, Pitch, Mod Bus, Vol Env & Filter Env. Noise was routable to the Mod Bus out. I used it for basic CV control with the rest of my setup- a Moog MP-201 Multipedal, Moog CP-251 Control Processor, a Moogerfooger MF-104SD Super Delay, an EHX Bi-Filter and a Dave Smith Tempest. The MP-201 was really something- sadly it doesn't bleep or bloop so I don't expect to see it on here. EHX Bi-Filter was pretty cool, too- a rack mount EHX product, which was a nicer Mu-Tron III. The Little Phatty definitely locks you into a certain sound. Which can be a good thing, I suppose- as limitations do breed creativity. But damn if those were the sounds you wanted/needed, it had no end to the funky drip. It was all very Moog of the late 2000s, early 2010s- a company at a crossroads, not knowing quite where to go next- but with an amazing pedigree and excellent engineering (the UX/UI was not so great)- a company lost among the Korgs, Access and Waldorfs- looking for some kind of inspiration or direction. Kind of like how our entire culture felt for the first 15 years of the new millenium. So sad I that I had to sell it all of it when I got laid off. Music is nice, but eating and not getting evicted is just a little bit nicer...

Moog is the only company that releases new synths with less technology then previous synths, so the model D had 3 oscillators and a noise source, little phatty, released over 35 years later, has two oscillators, no noise source, and less knobs.. thanks Moog for pushing the evelope of technology! And the original was wood, these melt into a puddle of sticky goo..

I'm glad it wasn't just me. Definitely some cognitive dissonance when a piece of Moog gear is so disappointing. Happy to forgive the crappy build quality, but the underwhelming, one-sided sound quality, nah. Any manufacturer is fair game if they make bad gear. Favoritism leads to lies. Lies lead to anger. Anger leads to hate. And, hate leads to the dark side.

Hahahah as always a very nice video! and you allmost had me struggling but then I remembered that most of those limitations are part of its superpower. As I stopped appreciating analogue synthesizers for their versatility and started adding a synthesizer to my studio only if it has its very own gap to fill with a strong enough character to not overlap too much with other models, it becomes high value to know what synth is a go to for certain tasks in productions. In this case and context of the design you understand how precisely moog nailed this misson of creating a sturdy stage bass and lead machine in the early 2000s that cuts through the mix with an easy access filter overload sound. ❤

At the time it was one of the cheapest and most accessible way to get some Moog ladder filter goodness. While not letting you adjust resonance and cutoff at the same time was a bit of a fail, it was a decent synth for its time. Currently a happy owner of an SE-02, but a used LP was a strong candidate while I was shopping for an affordable Moog-style synth.

Ugh, I put my Sub37 to the side for my Arp Odyssey because I have limited rack space and the wheels went gooey like you mentioned on the Phatty. This has never happened for me on any other synth, and I’ve had a couple dozen. I haven’t tried any of the internet degunking methods yet, but geez, it’s a Moog. I can understand why people want a hand-build synth with "Moog" written on it - but - 99.9% of people listening wouldn't tell it from a VSTi (or care either way) - that' the reality of the matter - if the individual owner likes it - great. But don't expect to be hero worshipped for it!

Moog, they cost a lot but they’re built so well. My Sub37 is not my first, Dodgy key beds and knackered circuit boards had to be negotiated before I got one that worked. Always the same question how do we pronounce moog like mug or like MOG? The moog Theramin in is a rip off (expensive as he'll) and I personal find it hard to be patience enough to reduce the sound (fatness) of it to a value where it does not kill a song with it..

I had one and I loved it. It sounds massive. Really easy to program. Nothing really wrong with it, although I wish they'd have 2 knobs for cutoff and resonance. It's absolutely a live synth imo. In 2023 the architecture seems a bit dated but it's a classic so not really a problem, especially for the price.
