I bought a Nord lead 2X for $900 last year. At first I assumed I had paid too much until I realized just what a power house it is. 4x multi timberal, 20 voices and a fantastic UI. It can do bread and butter subtractive but I think it's main strength lies in the weird robot FM digital funk you can program with it. For R&B, house and other genres like that it's amazing.

I read on a Keyboard magazine review by Jim Aikin several decades ago, that the wooden pitch stick mechanism is made out of a fighter jet stick. Nord Leads had an interface, actual knobs. And they were very easy to understand, being subtractive synths. In the '90s synths didn't have knobs and it was a competition on who makes the most convoluted rompler with the worst interface possible. So of course a thing with the immediacy of controls, very simple synth engine that did things well enough and also small-ish footprint would've stood out.

The NL2 has a sound of it's own although adding some effects really brings the sound alive. I found it always sits well in tracks. Mine had to have a new power transformer but otherwise it's been a solid and reliable instrument. I still love the look of it. You've shown off the sounds really well.

It's a cool idea btw. 8000 has this reputation of a synth capable only of '90s trance supersaw' patches or something. I wonder what else BadGear could do with it!

I had the Lead 1 expanded and it was great. I think what really hurt it in the court of public opinion is that it had absolutely no built in effects. The virus has incredibly good fx. A lot of the “sterile” and “harsh” criticism would have disappeared if you could just put a nice dreamy reverb on it. Hard to remember that back then computers were very slow so you weren’t just going to be able to slap a plugin reverb on every track, and of course if you wanted to play live with it you’d need external effects. Great synth though, i made so many records with it!

The Nord Lead 2 was my first piece of gear that made me realize how much better (certain) hardware was 'out of the box' for punchy full sound that can cut through a mix, the drum kit inside was icing on the cake. I bought a Nord modular v1 later in all three forms but kept the keyboard version. Along with the Nord drum series (3p to be precise) these are a must for any serious hardware user/collector/gear whore (I swear I use them when I feel inspired to do so). The Nord modular is a sleeping giant, it needs a showcase in your series. PLEASE MAKE A NORD MODULAR VIDEO! Thnx =)

I remember looking at Nord Leads and the Modular G2 and G2X about 15 years ago and wanting one badly. Then in 2009 I got myself a G2X with a hard case and a gooseneck microphone. But financial problems struck, and had to sell it, which I regret to this very day. That was my second worst decision ever. (the first one was getting rid of my '98 Volvo C70 T5 in 2014, just because of a transmission failure) During the pandemic I managed to get hold of a Nord Drum, so I'm not without a Clavia synth :) Btw, it might be a great Bad Gear material, and I'm more than happy to lend it :)

@@AudioPilz no Volvo is Bad Gear worthy IMHO, but the Nord Drum is :) A single encoder for editing patches (and switching between them), and a 3 digit 7 segment display makes editing patches quite hard

@@AttilaSVK It's not exactly a streamlined way to work with one.... The Nord Drum 3p is pretty decent as a live instrument and as a sound module, but actually programming it does require significant patience, and sometimes whiskey.

I’ve had the rack version for many years. To get around the performance and patch saving limitations, I just take a “massive MIDI dump” of what I’ve programmed and have it in the first few bars of the song. I do the same with the Supernova 2 as well. Then there’s no worries of accidentally overwriting a patch if you need to work on a track at a later date.
