Minor correction: USB midi IS class compliant if you change the setting to ‘generic’ rather than ‘vendor’ in settings. USB Audio does however require drivers sadly, but that’s because it’s got loads of stereo output pairs running over USB. I love my Xm, it’s not without its flaws but it covers so much sonic ground while covering so little physical ground. It has Bluetooth midi and also works as a Bluetooth speaker, so it’s a great for mobile settings. Decided to try and really learn it and make it work.

Totally hear you too. I've had m Jupiter X for several years now and I still find the whole save part scene thing confusing. I save patches, but god knows where and can never find them. I have moments of utter sonic joy with creating amazing multi layered soudscapes, I keep the DAW recording and catch the moment. but there's always a slight unexplainable pit in my stomach as I know when I put the Jup-X up against my JX8P sonically it doesn't quite have the depth. I love it, but it's complicated.

Roland really, really needs to spend 3-4 more months on UI before going gold and producing units. Their UI is frankly atrocious, generally. Occasionally they accidentally make a great machine, but it’s few and far between, especially where flagships are concerned. They tend to make overly-complicated UI. You’d think they could afford the talent and time to nail it. 🤷♂️

I had that feeling at first when I bought mine second hand in beginning of 2022. It felt confusing. Roland released OS v 3.0 and suddenly it started making sense. I put some effort in understanding the structure 1-2 weeks of every evening playing it a little and suddenly the logic behind the nobs and menys and how to use the partials fast on-off and how the different synth engines work and where to find them and essentially how to save patches and scenes, everything became clear. Now I use it at part of my gig set for one of the party bands I play in. Only the small keys are not really player-friendly, however the best minikeys I've tested on any synth. So it pays of the spend a few evenings just navigating the synth and learn it. And I beg to differ on the "don't own anything else" part, since I have 20+ synths 😉

It’s not plastic, the front is all metal, solid build and keys are perfectly playable. People can just get the X if they want a full size version. Once you learn how to master the knobs and their relation to what synth model you have selected it is a very good synth!
@darwiniandude3 ай бұрын
Think of it as a module then, but it happens to have some small ‘patch preview’ keys. The front sides and top are all metal. Roland even has a PDF on their side of the dimensions of the side plates and instructions so you can remove those metal edges and make wooden ones, should you so desire. But regarding the price, you have to keep in mind there is loads of polyphony, 5 parts, JP8, JU106, SH101(can make it poly) RD, XV-5080, JX8P and you can (paid) install JD-800 or a vocal processor add on for more than the normal vocoder. But go have a look at the Jupiter X. The Jupiter X is the same exact thing except more controls. So you get the same engine and sounds in a portable battery powered version for less than half the price. The SRX card equivalents to load into it are $25USD each, by time I sell the SRX cards I own and the JD-08 boutique that’s most of the Jupiter Xm paid off.

The ir-3109 (filter ic found in the Jp 4/8/6, Juno 6/60/106, sh-101/mc-202, and 303) is being remade by tons of companies. They should hire/create a new team for bringing the ogs back. Korg at least is bringing back their older designs and arps vintage catalog. When it comes to the new stuff they make, the og minilogue is the one that interests me the most.

I don't quite understand this point. I mean, I agree that knobs are much better, I loathe menu diving. But knobs are a matter of space. If you want a lot of knobs, you have to get the regular Jupiter X. The Xm is specifically a smaller version and you have to save space somewhere on a small synth.
@Paul_Y_T3 ай бұрын
Choice? Some of us want more parameters and synthesis options than is feasible for front panel knobs. The scope of the synth engine is the reason I bought one. The complexity of the underlying synth engine is the reason why it can do the digital stuff, inc 2x2op FM, along with the analog emulations, within the one box with reasonable polyphony. It's not that hard to learn the muscle memory to navigate the menus more efficiently eg shift + move a panel control drops to the menu section of the control (and so a quick way to access associated non-panel controls). If potential buyers don't like/want that breadth of synthesis then Roland offer the likes of gaia 2, system 8 and the boutiques to be more knob-per-function synths.

Great video as always! Jupiter-Xm and SH-4d are not that popular, but for me these two machines have provided lots of fun; only selecting some presets and tweaking a few knobs brings a lot of sound-mangling options. If you then add a TR-6s you have the holy trinity of Roland sounds. From 1996 to early 2000's I was a product demonstrator for Roland UK, based in Swansea. It was when the JP-8000 came along (very nice) but also the horrible MC 'Groovebox' range with the D-Beam, a totally useless device. I used to demonstrate the synths at large shows but always wished I'd been their demonstrator from the late 70's to mid 80's instead. Their old strap line used to read: 'We design the future'. Now it should read: 'We recycle our old stuff but make it sound like garbage'. If you really want some bad gear to review then can I suggest the Roland EG-101. It sounded as bad as it looked, and got me banned from a hotel in Leeds due to playing some 'hardcore' through the nasty speakers in the very early hours of the morning; there were lots of complaints from other guests. I think some alcohol might have been involved too.
"I MIGHT BE TO OLD FOR....", neither visually nor on a docunent! This time's suggestion is the eltamusic SOLAR 42 according to Benn Jordan:" Wow! It makes you make music you wouldn't mace otherwise. I give it in A".

This XM series... as well as Systems... it was made after brutal fall of JD-Xa\i series... Roland in 2015 made final attempt to give the world analog synthesis... after people said "No", Roland was absolutely morally destroyed. I swear to God, Junichi Miki never smiled after that... such a tragic story actually.

Fun Fun.There is something about the way you write certain note/chord changes in your music that has always seemed a bit familiar to me. In this video, for some reason, I figured out why it was familiar. There were a few changes that were reminiscent of similar changes on the laibach volk album, a personal favorite of mine. That made me smile. :)

I have had XM since it came on the market and it has given me a lot of headaches but it makes up for its extraordinary audio quality as an independent ASIO audio card. It has improved a lot with the updates, I recommend that you try them, the vocoder is unbeatable but its main defect is that it does not have a complete sequencer, which would make it a completely independent machine. To make live sets and play it with other instruments it works well, to configure it as a DAW it is a nightmare.

As an 4+years owner of the Jupiter XM i enjoyed the episode. People say it's overpriced but when you consider, that you get a decent acoustic piano + synth + drum machine (somewhat limited), and you can do some basic groovebox stuff it doesn't seem so pricey anymore. Comparing with the OG Microkorg which is 4 polyphony monotimbral and have a ugly, non playable keyboard, it's not that bad. The keyboard on Roland is this time very good quality. Similar to Yamaha Refaces. It good choice if you want to stop your gas and instead of collecting synths enjoy the menu diving. Sadly it didn't happen in my case. It's also very practical at gigs.

I had one of these. I up-traded it for the Jupiter X and it was a good move. The keybed is a massive improvement (I'm a pianist), the panel layout is much more ergonomic, and it keeps the great sounds. I use it live in an 80s group and its deep flexibility is really useful in that situation.

Dude I feel you, I have the Behringer 2600 and I adore the sound and physicality of it, and it was a steal at 350$ u.s. a few years back when nobody wanted it. The only downside is that bouncers at clubs will turn me away sometimes when they find out I use Behringer gear, "find another club buddy" 😔 so I just lie and tell people it's the Korg reissue.
@tomaszmazurek643 ай бұрын
@@GeorgeL909 I plan to get the 2600 soon as well. I feel the ARP clones after making some initial splash got a bit forgotten among the whole Behringer clone discourse and they are some truly great instruments.
@GeorgeL9093 ай бұрын
@@tomaszmazurek64 I mean real talk, aside from the internet drama aspect, the Behringer 2600 is fantastic for what it is. Currently they go for around 400-450 depending on the color in the u.s., whereas the Korg ARP m reissue is 1900, and an actual ARP 2600 is like freaking 12K on reverb, so the Behringer is by far the most affordable option. It even has class compliant USB midi, which some of my Roland's still don't even have! (I'm looking at you JD08 😐). Still subconsciously I feel dirty when I use it, but that's a me problem 🤣

I have both the Jupiter-X and the Jupiter-Xm, among others. I use the Xm mainly as a 2nd tier synth in my live rig, along with a Fantom--6 and an AX-Edge. Why do I have both? The Jupiter-X weighs 37.5 pounds. It stays home in my studio. I create sounds and patches using the X then easily import them into the Xm for gigs. That also works with the Fantom and the Edge. It's a pretty nice workflow and WAY easier than trying to program the Xm. Like anything, I'm sure it would get easier with practice. But even so, they're both amazing synths that can really do just about anything you want a synth to do.

Great video as always! This one always seemed a bit too many cooks but no target audience. I can't imagine it gets brought on stage a lot, and for studio/bedroom use at a comparable price point getting one over the System 8 as a Roland-museum-in-a-box seems slightly bonkers. There's the weird "Is it cheating?" scene/i-arpeggio stuff but I think we'd all trade in it a heartbeat for the JD-XI's four track, pattern-chain ready sequencer.

Cool review! It's a legit capable synth, which could have been even better if Roland would allow for user samples upload ( like the original 5080 ) and probably a bigger screen for all the parameters. But its aimed to be more of a presets machine for musicians I guess 🤷♂️ How about an episode on the beloved Cobalt 8? Lets give some love to Model Electrics, hope this boutique company overcomes it's financial difficulties ❤

Speaking as somebody who doesn’t himself spend remotely enough time from one day to the next practicing but prefers capturing what he can do with his own hands over any day, I will suggest (not for the first time, I know) that honing your piano playing isn’t a terrible idea. That having been said, I will note that, if I did not already have a trio of synth models with 37 mini keys (a microKorg XL, a Korg Odyssey clone and a Hydrasynth Explorer), the Jupiter XM could appeal to me - and just as much for everything you list as a drawback, AP, as for everything you list as a selling point. Something I won’t forget from when I had an ARP Axxe Mk II between August 2000 and January 2007 is how it is not what is synthesizer can do but what it doesn’t do that activates what is in you.
