A corporal is a junior NCO, noncommissioned officer. Two ranks above private & one rank below sergeant. You cannot go to Sandhurst & come out a corporal, that is where you trained to be a COMMISIONED officer; lowest ranking 2nd lieutenant. All ranks from lance corporal to warrant officer class 1 (RSM - Regimental Sergeant Major) started off as privates. A corporal (or “full screw” in army slang is actually very low ranking in the army. But this does not mean that they do not have authority, especially within the regimental police.
