If I remember correctly, the "skin like just pressed olive oil" was from Song of Achilles, and the author responded by pointing out that olive oils DO come in skin tones, but she was trying to emulate of the Ancient Greek trend of describing the vibe, not the actual thing. This description was meant to evoke vitality, I think.

Also I seem to recall that the ancient Greeks thought of and linguistically treated color was different from the way we do -- that it was more about lights and darks than the specific hues. Thus you get "the wine-dark sea," referring to the shade rather than the actual color. Maybe the olive oil thing could be riffing on that?
@anonymousfellow8879

@@draughtoflethe “Wine-dark sea” has apparently been linked to a specific type of algae that really does look like cloudy grape juice, and since The Illiad is part of an already ancient oral tradition before Homer performed the version that later got written down…at some point the seas were covered in this stuff. The “I carry kids in my nuts all my life” is interesting. Women then “carry kids in their ovaries all their life” too. And the ovule/egg is the largest cell in the body, whereas the sperm is the smallest cell in the body, so.... take that for your heavy lifting all around.

plus according to S Kes, who commented as well, it turns out that after 10-14 weeks roughly the sperm dies and gets recycled into something else if not used whereas females are born with the eggs already there so it turns out we even have the longer lasting award too!

*cough* We're not all women *cough* Yeah, people who are born with uteruses are already born with a finite amount of eggs. Sperm cells are produced by the body even when someone is older, but egg cells are there and what you have is what you have. You don't gain any. It's wrong on all accounts, because people who can give birth, are the ones that carry those egg cells with them their entire life.

He’s not even close to right either. You carry the egg that makes the baby for life. He carried the sperm that makes the baby for a few weeks tops. Sperm is constantly being produced in the testes and will die not long after it’s created. Women’s eggs are already present when she is born, she’s born with the all of her eggs she will carry for the rest of her life and will never produce anymore. So even if carrying eggs or sperm was hard you’d still be winning.

A funny side note about the min 5:52 meme: sperm is actually constantly reproduced (only startig in puberty) and only lives for around 10-14ish weeks at the most in the testes before being recycled. Meanwhile ovaries carry all the oocytes (eggs)you will/might need throughout your entire life from the day they develop (a couple of millions in fetal phase, around 300-400k left by the time puberty hits); only maturing/releasing one to a few every month, storing the rest. Ergo: they are even wrong at being wrong xD
@crowheartwarrior

Seriously! Using the person's weird line of thinking, it would actually be the person with ovaries who "carried the child" for their whole life, and anyone with testes is just disposing of and making new children every few months.

Yesssss i just said this to my partner.... like we literally are born with the eggs and they stay there. So literally going by their weird logic, females are the ones who carry the zygote that would turn into a baby a lot longer. Also pretty sure they develop in utero so the egg that produced my baby was actually growing in me while i was growing in my mum 🤣 thats trippy 🤣

I read it's more like 5 days or less, after which point they're reabsorbed by the body or purged out of the system. So it's even less than that. The only way the meme could even remotely make sense is if it was written by a trans man. So-- accidental ally?

@@FrozEnbyWolf150 5 days is how long they can survive in the vagina/uterus/fallopian tubes after ejaculation. The ~10 weeks (not seen it extended as high as 14 but it wouldn't surprise me if it happened occasionally) is how long they can survive before ejaculation that said, if the person's ejaculating daily it'd only take around 14 days for sperm to get ejaculated, so the only way someone would have "carried their kid for 10-14 weeks" is if they'd not ejaculated for that whole time before having sex and conceiving

*Just some hormones we all (should) have:* Progesterone, Adrenaline, Cortisol, Growth Hormone, Estrogen, Testosterone, Melatonin, Dopamine, Insulin, Anti-Diuretic Hormone… then you can get into other hormones secreted by the thyroid to signal the breakdown of excess calcium, pituitary that deals with too many things, and so on. We have a ton of hormones. They’re basically just signals to tell the body to do what it needs to do and when from having a healthy circadian rhythm to telling our growth plates to trigger sudden growth and when to stop (growth spurts, or in their extreme phases pituitary dwarfism or pituitary gigantism often from defects or tumors of the pituitary gland). Hyperthyroidism is the overproduction of thyroid-related hormones, which may cause sudden extreme weight gain even with dieting, or early osteoporosis due to an excess of the hormones that break down calcium. They’re the messenger systems of the body and they are all equally important, even if they are known as “sex hormones”, they are still present in all genders and identities, just at different levels.

It's upsetting how some Bad Men's Anatomy is used to gaslight women into sex. When I was a teenager/young adult, I was shocked at how many of my peers were pressured to having sex because the guy said "when men have erections it hurts terribly and can only be healed by having sex with a woman, and since a woman is at fault for getting a man aroused and causing him pain, she must consent to sex." I think what made them gullible was the lack of sex ed where I lived, since the only type of sex ed girls received was purity-before-marriage stuff or anti-abortion crap.

He never punished any of his children for swearing, destroying things he didn't personally care about, or ignoring our homework. But if you were crying too loud and didn't shut up when he told you to, he got the belt out. Your chances of getting punished do not depend on how bad your actions are, but on how much your actions irritate and anger him. He doesn't really parent any of us,(he left all the parenting up to our mom) and every child knows he plays favorites. We can even agree on which child places where in the ranking of his affection, based on who he spends the most time with.

1:20 - what's wrong with just catching them and putting them outside, or leaving them alone? I think that depends entirely on where you live and what kind of spiders we're talking about. I'm Australian. Spiders inside the house is just a regular, everyday fact of life. However, sometimes the spider you have found indoors is not one you want to cohabitate with. I found an adult male funnel web spider in my laundry room one time. It was very cranky and reared at me when I walked into the room (it was about 4 ft away from me). I killed it without hesitation. Those buggers are nasty. Huntsman spiders are big and ugly. I mean really ugly. Like "savagely beaten with the ugly stick". But they eat annoying bugs like moths and mosquitoes. I'd prefer them to be outside though. They get captured and put outside into the garden. Orb weaver spiders are also useful. I've never heard of them coming indoors but they do build a massive web in gardens and on porches and so on. Had one build an enormous web on the open side of the carport, where it caught vast numbers of bugs attracted to the exterior lights on the house. So if it's indoors and is possibly harmful to me? Sorry, you have chosen poorly. Not harmful? You get a free one-way trip out to the garden.

@friend_trilobot

To clarify what I mean by "what ancient humans believed" - I've heard that many cultures thought sperm contained a tiny human that, like a seed, needed a warm, fertile environment to grow and develop into a full baby - that's why you needed to "put your seed in a woman" and why wombs are compared to the earth and have the mystical quality of being "fertile" - I think it might have also been the belief that this tiny human was, by default, male, and being a girl was by influence of the mother - thus, not having a Male baby is traditionally a woman's fault - I think it's really ironic that in actual reproduction nearly every part of that is the opposite: sperm does a small part - it just provides dna and decides the biological sex by random chance, but no actual baby comes along until the womb literally makes the tiny human using the birth parent's own body mass over a 9 month period - its like, they got every part entirely wrong, lmao

Fun fact about the Captain America pic: It's drawn over a famous pic of Arnold Schwarzenegger flexing, but the artist didn't really have a great understanding of anatomy, so changed the pose without really changing the size or shape of the muscles, which is why it looks so off. Googling "Arnold Schwarzenegger chest pose" will bring up the photo the artist referenced.

My entire life I believed only men have Adam's apple ... cause that is how I was taught by every man in my life ... and didn't discover otherwise until I found Jamie ... my mind went "He's trans... how did they give him an adam's apple like a cis man?" then I realized everyone has one and I felt like my life was a lie...

Adam's apple refers to the garden of Eden i think Google it. The history of the name. It's a silly and shortsighted thing but so came the name. But everyone has it indeed. It does become sharper and bulges out with male Borns thanks to testosterone thickening the area and giving it more volume. I might explained it wrong but yeah. Some people also are skinnier or have longer and thinner necks or bigger Cartilage so the Adams apple naturally portrudes more. Including women. Not all men have big Adams apples but still have a very deep voice. Could be hiding under the jaw or beard too or posture of the neck.

"What's wrong with catching them and putting them outside?" Thank you. The same goes for those big, harmless, nocturnal moths. They may startle you but are no threat to clothes or food. And the spiders might look scary but they're really useful.
@SamirCCat
@SamirCCat 2 жыл бұрын
You have to be brave enough to come so close to the spiders that you can take them out. To catch one in a glass and go out with it is too close handling for me (I live alone). I have to kill them, even if I would prefer for them to be alive. But it's my house and they invade. I always take out moths/other insects through glasses because I'm not scared of them. Last year I had a spider that was as big, fat and hairy as a grown man's fist. No way my phobia lets beasts like that live in my apartment, or come close to me. The only way is to kill them quickly and then stand shaking from anxiety. I hate spiders!
@thesirensystem
@thesirensystem 2 жыл бұрын
Putting spiders outside kills them. They're inside because it's warm and when they get really cold if they don't find shelter quickly they can die. So your options are: Squash them, killing them quickly Put them outside, killing them slowly most of the time Leave them alone, keeping them alive All I'm saying is that option 2 doesn't work
@multipleSpiders
@multipleSpiders 2 жыл бұрын
@@thesirensystem depends on the kind of spider. There are some spiders that rely heavily on human structures for protection, like cellar spiders, and there are some who do well inside or outside, like parson spiders I wouldn’t put any outside if it’s really cold out though
@SamirCCat
@SamirCCat 2 жыл бұрын
@@thesirensystem What...? It depends on the season of course?? I have way more spiders in the summer and they survive the swedish summer climate just fine (they come from outside!). If it's winter it's another thing, but I hardly get any spiders during winter. Do you live in antarctica?? I'm confused.
