Mission Impossible surprised me. I was expecting it to be good, but the dream sequence Hunt's character has floored me. It's such an intense, beautiful scene. The music behind it is great, the subject matter is great, everything about it is great. The movie itself snuck up on me. I expected good, but damn it was great.

There were a bunch of films that I liked this year, but not a lot I loved, especially compared to recent years. Some of the films you mentioned were also my favourites, especially The Favourite, Mission Impossible and Spider-man. I was interested to see you rate Colette highly, since I thought it mainly just ok, but maybe that's because I saw it days after The Favourite, and it seemed the lesser of the costume dramas about historical ladies indulging in peculiar romances (at least for the time period). However, as you pointed out, it might need time for me to reassess it, and it could rise in my estimation; there were certainly a lot of good things about the piece that I really liked. I also really liked First Man, a film that seems to have dropped off a lot of people's radars since it came out, and didn't get the plaudits I thought it was going to get. In terms of bad films, I don't think I saw any that were memorably bad, since I try and only watch films in the theatre that I am fairly certain I will enjoy and on which I will not waste my money. Certainly, I can't think of any huge disappointments or annoyances.

I recently bought Into the Spiderverse and didn't have a blu-ray player readily available with me, so I popped in the included DVD into my laptop. I haven't watched a DVD in a while, but wow, I was shocked by the quality. Even the top menu was blurry and jpg'd to death. I didn't make it past the first 5 minutes before I turned it off. It was like visiting my crazy parents and witnessing them watch a VHS on their 4K television, or a 2007-era KZbin video running at 144p, rather than a day-old DVD. Modern resolutions have ruined my standards.

My favorites: Black Panther, Into the Spiderverse, and Deadpool 2...and that's it. To be fair, they were ALL that I saw of the 2018 films. Super Spouse agrees those are also his favorites, but he also quite enjoyed Bumblebee and Infinity War. But, yeah, we rarely go to the theater because of cost, and we both have acute social anxiety, so we prefer to watch movies at home. Into the Spiderverse, though really was such a JOY to watch. 2018 felt like it was 20 years long and we got THAT at the end of the year to give us some hope. It was glorious! In fact, Black Panther and Into the Spiderverse as bookends to an otherwise horrendous year was pretty awesome.

Aside from Slender Man being a boring trash heap (and especially pointless when I can watch better Slender Man things for FREE on this very site), I'd probably rank Pacific Rim: Uprising as my worst film of the year. It was objectively BETTER than Slender Man, but as a fan of the original Pacific Rim, I walked away feeling just utterly betrayed. I just hope the Netflix animated show (if it ever comes to fruition) can make up for it.

I’m sorry but Mission Impossible, Quiet Place, and Star is Born, I didn’t see the big deal about those films. They were just so overrated. Just to summarize, the constant attempts to make Ethan Hunt some complex hero fell flat in M:I, the world building in QP was a mess, and ASIB was done much better with Judy Garland. BTW, if you liked The Hate U Give, I really recommend Blindspotting. It tackles on similar themes but I felt it was much better.

My only disagreement is with putting 'The Hate U Give' as one of the best. I'm hard-pressed to think of a film that drove me to as much of a rage as that one. For Christ's sake, this film BLAMES BLACK PEOPLE for us getting shot by 🚔. The killer cop is let go, but Anthony Mackie's moustache-twirling Black drug dealer is arrested and there's practically a 🌈 pver the "happy" ending. That shit is inexcusable. Hey, Film Brain, I've been a fan of yours for years. And while I like your reviews very much I feel like your set-up could be significantly better, visually speaking. There is something about your choice of framing and lighting that I feel doesn't work. Having a poster-filled wall on your right and then mostly emptiness on your left really shifts the balance of the visuals to the left side of the screen. And I would really advise using a light on your front. Your eyes are both sort of hidden in shadow, which creates a sense of lifelessness.

I liked The Predator. A LOT. I thought it was a GREAT movie all the way through. I LOVED the cast and I LOVED The inter-war between the Predators and I loved their designs. The invention in the film would probably be covered under that, but it was a technology they were planning on releasing to public, and they talk about it like that's what patents are traditionally meant to do, which they don't.

I was very not impressed by Black Panther and list it on the bottom of the MCU along Thor: The Dark World, Ms. Marvel, and Iron Man 3. Frankly, it’s historic Best Picture nom wreaks of political posturing since the Best Popular Film couldn’t get acceptance which would have very likely gone to BP.
