Originally posted in November 2012, this is a re-edited version of the review that runs 2m 25s shorter than the original. Aside from the usual edits to film clips, one or two lines have been cut due to being incorrect, but this is also the most effort I've ever had to do to correct my performance. This was as I was starting to transition to the "angry" phase where I was very exaggerated and shill, and I've tried to mitigate that with countless cuts; the voiceover was just on the very edge of being able to be re-edited rather than having to do the whole thing over (which will be the case with some). I remember feeling a bit disheartened when this review first came out because I got a lot of flak over my choice of Bond film, rather than other entries like Moonraker or Quantum of Solace, hence why I stepped up the "anger" for the subsequent year. Regardless, I hope you enjoy this repost, which is to coincide with another video later in the month.

I have to disagree with the creepy sex offender reference to Bond, it's not like the women weren't aggressive in these films. I mean no woman had ever said no to Bond that I'm aware of, none of them are under duress, so seems pretty consentual to me.
@Barbayat79
@Barbayat79 7 жыл бұрын
First, not saying NO does not equal consent, don't recall him in this movie nearly as much, but Bond does rape and forces himself on women in the older movies (either force or duress). So calling him sex offender might be technically incorrect as he hasn't been convicted and registered, but I think it gets across how little regard he has for consent.
@Barbayat79
@Barbayat79 7 жыл бұрын
Had to quickly look up the names and found a nice summary "Connery's Bond rapes three women in his films in total: he pressured Miss Taro (an enemy agent sent to spy on him) in Dr No into sleeping with him, forcibly rapes Miss Galore (I refuse to dignify that fucking name) and blackmails Patricia Fearing in Thunderball into having sex with him by threatening to get her fired." Not that other scenes aren't a bit iffy and I do remember him beating women but I don't remember if he forced himself on them, too. The less said about the book Bond the better. Bond movies are pretty fun, but there are those scenes where I prefer to get a drink from the kitchen to avoid being crept out by some scenes.

15:00 Secrecy? We are talking about a man who would introduce himself with his real name to the villain and not so subtlety hint that he is an agent. Remember how he used to taunt Largo at their first poker game in Thunderball? James Bond always had this cheekiness of hiding in plain view. Kind of a bad spy if you think about it.

What's funny about Brosnan's ornithologist line is that the author of the original James Bond novels, Ian Flemming, got the name James Bond from looking at a book about birds by a guy actually named James Bond. I have no idea if the line was a reference to that fact, or just a really stupid line, but considering how much DAD references other James Bonds films, it wouldn't be surprising if it was a reference. (Although it probably wasn't)

32:23 I don't think it was his suit that had a function to electrocute himself, I think the idea was that he was hanging onto the side of the plane, which was metal, and the electricity coming out of his gloves reacting and backfiring onto him. Although I guess that's still just as stupid, since that means this supposed criminal mastermind didn't consider such an obvious flaw with his 'half-built Robocop' cosplay.

21:39 - I think what happened here was that Graves' backstory was lifted pretty much directed from the literary version of Hugo Drax. However, they evidently forgot to include the part where Novel!Drax killed a reclusive millionaire and stole his identity, just so it wouldn't look like he magically blinked into existence all of a sudden. Oh, and he did it over the course of a decade or so, not just 14 months.

I remember watching an old Bond movie when I was younger (Dr No.) and in it, Bond deliberately sleeps with a woman who he knows is there to kill him and hates his guts (actually hates his guts, in a legit way, not a 'you were my target but I developed feelings for you' kind of way). He slept with her purely because he wanted to, and later left with a smirk on his face, while she was handcuffed to the bed and furious. It the first time I saw James Bond be a huge creep, but it definitely wasn't the last (coughSkyfallcough)

I am one of those demented souls who actually likes this film. It's got that "so bad it's good" vibe to it, and has a few things I like. The characters have decent ideas behind them, Brosnan is on top form as Bond, Toby Stephens hams it up quite well, and I think Rosamund Pike did surprisingly well for her first film role. The Aston Martin Vanquish is my second favourite Bond car behind the DB5: it's sleek, cool, has lots of gadgets (the invisibility thing isn't even that unrealistic), and partakes in what is for my money the best car chase in the entire series, mainly thanks to it being the only time a villain has been given a gadget-laiden car to rival Bond's. The score is also good, and at the very least Madonna's song is upbeat and catchy, something the last 3 Bond songs weren't. Overall, I like the film because it's the kind of over-the-top Bond film we'll probably never get again.

Die Another Day is officially 20 years old! I remember i saw it with my late dad opening weekend I didn't hate it and it made $431.9 million but I understood why it was so clumsy celebrating the 40th anniversary of the franchise at the time Still elements that work: fun action set pieces particularly the feud between Bond and Gustav Graves, love Halle Berry as Jinx, Rick Yune as the diamond faced Zao, and this was my first introduction to Rosamund Pike Judi Dench is still my favorite as M The bits of the film that do work are unfortunately marred by a ham-fisted script that relentlessly attempts a Roger Moore degree of wordplay There is no pun or sexual innuendo too shameful for screenwriters Neal Purvis and Robert Wade Even as an ode to the arch manner of Bonds-passed, there seemed to be little discrimination in which lines would be cut The theme song by Madonna is way too overproduced mixing in techno and synthesizer vocals Can't help but notice that lack of cohesion between the dialogue, tonal shifts, and disastrous special effects is greatly director Lee Tamahori’s fault but Broccoli and Wilson need to share in that blame Moore even publicly stated that he hated this film for all its ridiculousness Heck it was controversial in the Korean Peninsula and The North Korean government disliked the portrayal of their state as brutal and war-hungry It almost killed the franchise to embarrassing degrees to the point of self parody Lots of ludicrous stuff from invisible cars to laser beams Yet this is a notable Bond film for several reasons; Principal of which was due to the world-changing event that took place during its production 9/11 upended the Western world and, in turn, what they expected from their entertainment The classic Bond villain was no longer a believable threat to the world Existential danger was more palpable, more real Broccoli and Wilson understood this and decided to pursue a completely different path for Ian Fleming’s world-famous spy The movie made Pierce Brosnan the only Bond to be let go from the role but also ultimately brought us, Daniel Craig, as the gritty rebooted agent and the greatest Bond we’ve got Thank god the series got rebooted and Skyfall did a better job celebrating its 50th at the time

Funny how Lee Tamahori damn near destroyed both the James Bond and the XXX franchises. Brosnan's age is certainly an issue; he looks okay throughout much of it but terrible in the opening NK infiltration. And yet it's still not as cringey as the close-up of Roger Moore's baggy eyes framed by a scuba mask in For Your Eyes Only. I wouldn't watch another Bond movie until Goldeneye because of that single repulsive shot. "He's not even trying to hide the fact he's a bad guy! He even looks like a weasely bastard! So how the hell has he fooled anyone into thinking he's a humanitarian!!" Counterpoint: Donald Trump still has a third (or a quarter...no, wait, a fifth, maybe) of the United States convinced he's a patriot.

It sounds cluttered and over-processed, with too many filters and effects apply that it sounds very unnatural.

Terrific and accurate review. This movie sucks and needs to be called such. Lifelong Bond fan but I remember apologizing to my date in 2002 for taking her to this piece of crap. Same thing happened in 2015 with the abomination that is Spectre.

Hopefully Bond's next time being assisted by a black female secret agent will go better.

In my opinion this is the guilty pleasure of James Bond movies next to Octopussy.

Yeah, even as a Bond fan I actually kinda like Die Another Day. Sure, it's not great but I found some pretty enjoyable moments, and to be honest I actually like the Madonna theme as a guilty pleasure.

32:16 I wouldn't be surprised if this part inspired a similar scene with Captain Haddock in the Tintin movie

I love the return of the Aston Martin in this film and the chase sequence with the Jaguar, but this movie is so silly that it's hard to enjoy it.

worst bond ever, from script, theme, performances and direction, and the director was arrested for soliciting whilst dressed as a woman. guess it was doomed from start to finish.

Say what you will about the film, but this was Judi Dench's second best performance as M. After being turned into a sentimental idiot in the previous film, she made a comeback with a vengeance. She dumps Bond and then brings him back without remorse. That's the leader of MI6.
