This review was originally posted in July 2010, and this is a re-edited version that runs 3m 15s shorter than the original, and has been upscaled to HD and had noise reduction to remove camera noise. In addition to the usual edits for film clips, there's quite a few snipped lines here that did not age well at all, which is a shame because this is probably the best of the Stallone Month reviews (I am slightly annoyed I kept pronouncing Memo's name incorrectly too). This is the final episode of that month, proceeded by Nighthawks, Cobra, The Specialist, and Get Carter. Overall, you can still tell this is early days for me - subsequent months on Seagal and Snipes improved on this by being more in-depth and funnier, and less reliant on cheap jabs from having to make so many episodes in such a quick timeframe. Anyway, hope you enjoy!

@neilprice5136 жыл бұрын
Racing is pretty safe compared to other dangerous sports, the drivers and crews train to limit crashes and the dangers of motor racing. So crashes during a race are rare. According to this movie multiple horrific races happen with each race, which if true in real life, would mean that international consensus between governments would end ALL motor racing due to it being too dangerous. (This almost happened after a disaster during the 1955 Le Mans 24 hour race) Is this movie set in the same universe as Death Race? I can see why F1 decided to not allow Stallone to use them in this movie, probably laughing him out of the room, It's disrespectful to every driver and their families who ever died during a race.
@veronicasilk84296 жыл бұрын
For a racing drama, the amount of crashes (as well as the Chicago chase) is so ridiculous that it's impossible to take seriously. At least with something like the Fast & Furious movies, it was justified because they played out like action/crime films and roll with its nonsense, not to mention that the racing is illegal, so any potential crashes make sense since they're not as organized as professional circuits.

1:40-1:42 Funny thing about that. The weekend Driven came out was the weekend CART was supposed to have a race at Texas Motor Speedway. Unfortunately, the cars were too fast and the drivers were regularly graying out and even blacking out when they went into the turns. The G-forces were just that high. This gave CART the image as a racing series run by a bunch of bufoons and its races were booted from broadcast TV to cable. By 2003, all the top teams had defected to the IRL and CART shut its doors completely early in 2008.

It's kinda hard to believe that Renny Harlin at one point directed Die Hard 2 and Cliffhanger, two of the best action films of the early 90's. Yea, wth happened? _Deep Blue Sea_ and _Cliffhanger_ are my all-time favorites from him, I even have a soft spot for _Die Hard 2_ cause it was my very first DH film and for its big-ass explosions. _12 Rounds_ was the only Harlin film I'd seen in cinema, and even when seeing it then I had felt depressed by how much it had reminded me of _Die Hard 3,_ it felt like an "MTV-style remake" w/o the nuance. And now it seems like he's directing films in China currently.
@davidjames5796 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Long Kiss Goodnight is really good. Plus it's a Shane Black screenplay. Harlin's then wife Geena Davis really commits to the role (and enjoys it), Samuel L Jackson is Samuel L Jackson, and Brian Cox has a memorable cameo with some great sour lines. Driven was his first film after Deep Blue Sea and seems to have been the beginning of the end. He's just become a DTV style schlockmeister since then, even been brought in as a studio hack to re-film Paul Schrader's Exorcist 4.

8:40-9:14 It specifically says on Driven's wikipedia page that this movie takes place during the 2000 CART season. That season, the Toronto Grand Prix took place before the Firestone Firehawk 500 at Twin Ring Motegi in Japan. 10:30 Okay, here's the proof that this was originally a Formula One movie. CART didn't go to Germany in 2000. They did go to Germany's EuroSpeedway Lausitz in 2001 and 2003, but they used the Superspeedway. The reason NASCAR never races in the rain is because the banked turns of the ovals cause the water to pool in the infield. I doubt CART or IndyCar could race at a wet superspeedway, only wet road courses and street circuits. 11:29 I asked my dad about this crash, and he said that while Indy cars can sometimes be used as accidental ramps, the cars never go that high. Also, the announcer mentioned Max Papis who was a real driver. 12:00-12:14 Oh my god! That crash was so over the top that it was hilarious!

Even for a 2001 movie that CGI is atrocious. The flying coin appears to be the same graphic as the flying manhole cover! Love that the Cop actually has recorded evidence of the F1 cars going at 195 mph, but neither driver gets prosecuted! They're only fined by the racing authority. Why did he steal the car in the first place? Because he was in a huff? Great attitude to have when driving a car like that. Little bits of trivia: Robert Rodriguez was originally going to direct the film. He later directed Sly in Spy Kids 3, so not much improvement. In the late 90's, Ridley Scott was to have directed an actual Ayrton Senna biopic starring Antonio Banderas.

Brandenburg pulled out of the race in Germany (a race that shouldn't be taking place anyway because it's rain on an oval track) because his team told him that Memo had crashed, and told him to go and help... *and Brandenburg obliged!!* Why Beau!? You have a championship to worry about, and even from Jimmy's prospective, if your teammate crashes, it's their's and your team's problem, not yours. No wonder Beau lost the championship... or did he? Brandenburg went in to the final race with a 4 point lead. I confess I only started watching motorsports in 2005, 4 years after this film was released but I read up that in 2001, leading the most laps in a CART race meant an extra point. Jimmy Bly won (which would give him 20 points) with Brandenburg 2nd (resulting in 16 points). Beau led more laps, as least as far as we can tell anyway, which means HE would be CART champion (the title world champion is only reserved for F1) by just 1 point. The rule for 1 point for most laps led was active until 2004.

@jamesatkinsonja4 ай бұрын
You can find footage of Stallone in David Coulthard's Williams in 1994 where they took the parts around the cockpit out so he could fit in!

he is called the gay blade not because he smokes a lot of pole but because he is happy and jubilant. the word Gay has more meanings that simply homosexual. the joke is as forced as this movies plot.

Yes, "gay" does have another meaning, even _The Flintstones_ show's opening song has the line "We'll have a gay old time", meaning a "happy old time". Sorry I'm saying this, but I'm glad to not be the only one who knows that "gay" has another meaning.

I'm guessing you're unaware of the 1981 comedy _Zorro, The Gay Blade_ with George Hamilton's cheesy performance as Zorro's gay twin brother which Buck was probably referencing, which is what they're usually doing when they refer to that movie in movie review channels.

i didn't think gay stuff bothered you this much. in your other episodes you would call out homophobia or say you would ignore the gay stuff in the Tooth Fairy because it was bad taste. i love the BMB over projector so was excited to see so many all at once even if they're old, but every one of these has an anti-gay comment somewhere like no movie should ever have anything remotely gay in it at all, or "i like the naked woman but ew who wants to see the naked guy! i never wanna see naked guys! gross!" like ur afraid people will think ur gay if u don't make it very very clear that you don't like guys/think the gay references are annoying. maybe you've changed over the years and younger-you isn't the same as you are now? as a gay person who really liked ur channel, i feel pretty uncomfortable right now :/

I completely understand that, it was something I personally found a bit cringeworthy going back through these reviews myself. I think at the time these reviews were made, those jokes didn't stand out as much, but that doesn't defend them because they were cheap and lazy. That's one of the reasons that I am not as proud of these Stallone reviews as I am later ones (like Tooth Fairy), and I do think I have grown and matured considerably since these were made (and I think people's understanding of LGBT issues has also moved on considerably), and in later episodes have called out these same attitudes (in this movie's case, the jokes about Memo were slightly more contextualized, because there does appear to be some subtext there). I try and continue to be better and can only apologize; these reviews are very much of their time, for better and worse, and are largely here for archive purposes.
