Agreed on Aliens: the first film created a genuine sense of the truly, well...alien. The organic ship with its impossible internal proportions, the space jockey growing from its chair, and the constantly changing, invulnerable monster all served to keep the audience off balance and weirded out. Aliens, as much as I love it, nonetheless turned its antagonists into a cannon fodder ant colony - something recognisable, and massively less threatening. Even the egg carrier ship was distinctly more mechanical, and so more familiar, and safer.
@Tyler_W3 жыл бұрын
I loved Aliens, but I agree, if you liked the original for its suspenseful, atmospheric horror and the fact that the alien was mysterious, unknown and constantly evolving, Aliens definitely leaves something to be desired. I think the alien is still threatening and intimidating, though, just in a different way, for better or worse, in a very different kind of movie. I think they gave us too many answers to the wrong kind of questions that we didn't need answered, not in the way they were given anyway. I won't argue with anyone who believes Aliens is great, as I thoroughly enjoyed it myself, but if anyone wanted the sequel to be more of the tone of the original, I can definitely agree that Aliens is simply not as good as Alien. I'm one of those people firmly in the camp that, although I really enjoy Aliens akd believe it is a pretty good movie, the original is far more creatively interesting and the superior film.

The original script for the movie that eventually became American Psycho 2 started as a generic slasher type movie that had nothing to do with American Psycho at all, but then when production started they decided to alter the script to shoe-horn in a half-assed connection to Patrick Bateman, to cash in on the American Psycho name. The movie should honestly be ignored and not even considered a true sequel to American Psycho. Just forget it exists, lol.

The Legend of Zorro. Most people seem to consider it a lesser yet enjoyable sequel to an underrated 1990s classic, but I hate this sequel with every fiber of my being. The original had an edge to it, the action was spectacular but it was very grounded and emotionally compelling; it also had a distinct hispanic vibe, dare I say a "class" that you don't find in most films, even though Antonio Banderas is the only Spanish cast member. The Legend of Zorro on the other hand is almost a parody, it's goofy, artificial, childish, jingoistic and obnoxious in equal measure.

Now it's just another in the pattern of modern movies where the original masculine hero gets subverted and undermined to make way for the allegedly inherently superior feminine replacement. I enjoy them a lot, except for the first half of Part 2. They teased a spectacular story with Marty going forward in time to meet (and help) his kids. Kind of the first film, but inverted - which would’ve been a wonderful counterpoint. But that plot line went nowhere, and instead we got the Biff/Donald Trump thing. Which hey, kinda cool, but misses the core of what made the first movie special. The hook of Back to the Future was time travel, but its staying power came from the perspective time travel offers on family. As soon as Part 2 lost sight of that, it became a lesser film. But hey, the “back to 1955” sequence is fun as hell, and Part 3 is unironically one of my favorite Westerns - even with the cringey preaching at the end.
@acrophobe3 жыл бұрын
They definitely were a cash grab and don't measure up to the original, but in hindsight, the Back to the Future sequels and the way they filmed them with such confidence as an epic big budget back-to-back two-parter only 6 months apart was way ahead of its time. And both sequels are very enjoyable in their own right.
@mabusestestament3 жыл бұрын
Imo the sequels are good, especially part 2 which I think is just as good as the original and it's so much fun. 3 is less good but works well as part of a trilogy. I really like how they expanded it into a trilogy and the whole trilogy also works well on a meta level, where it's not so much time travel but them going into the classic American genres and the (popular) visions America has/ had of itself.

First, Michelle Pfeiffer still gives me chills when I watch her portrayal of Catwoman. Second, don't count American Psycho 2 out. It's not high-brow or terribly clever, that's for damn sure, but there's something fun and playful about it. It introduced me to the singer "Imogen Heap" so I forgive it for so many crimes just for that. Judge it independent of the first. I mean, how could anyone possibly have made a sequel to the first? What else is there to say that needs said? What point was left out from such a commentary on society? It's not really a sequel at all. Some producer that didn't even get the first film tried a cash grab, and what we got is a little murderous romp through a college campus. It's enough to be entertaining if you'll just accept it as that.

Im new to your page. Like it a lot so far. You're really knowledgeable about film. I always have to speak up for GDF 3. GDF3 is a 90's movie. Films in the 90's were shot a certain way and were done a certain way. As a fan of the original 2 GDF's I was soo excited that they did one more just to tie things up for the fans and I guess for Coppolla, the characters etc. Its not as good as the last 2, there's no doubt there. But I don't know as a fan and someone who just sometimes wants more of something he likes, I was into seeing what became of Michael, I loved Pacino's heart attack scene, in the kitchen... I mean.. U made a good point the Kaye and Michael relationship was great. I also really liked the way it was shot. At any rate it holds its place as 90s film.. a very late sequel of 2 movie classics.. It was the 90's man. It still holds up in my opinion. The other day, I was thinking I want them to give us a GD4!.. what became of Andy Garcia as The Godfather, and btw Talia Shire was great in 3.

Lethal Weapon 4. The first one is great, 2 and 3 are good and entertaining, but you can see with the 4th one why Gibson and Glover had to be convinced to come back for it, 6 years after the third installment. Right from the start you have this arbitrary sequence with a guy in a flame resistant suit with a flamethrower and a machine gun burning and shooting up a street for no apparent reason, until Riggs convinces Murtaugh to strip down to his boxers and flap his arms like a chicken to distract the guy. The whole plot with Murtaugh taking in the Chinese family, and them taking on Jet Li and the mob he's in, seemed a bit much. At least in Lethal Weapon 2 when they take on the South Africans, there was a more interesting plot with one of the antagonists being the killer of Riggs's wife, and Riggs getting revenge for that and killing his new girl. Then in the end Pesci and Gibson have this unnecessary scene in the cemetery, followed by a very cheesy ending in the hospital: "WE'RE FAMILY!!!" capped off by a scrap book style end title sequence with pictures from all 4 films. In saying all of that, there are worst movies out there, the action sequence on the freeway was well done, there are some funny bits here and there with Gibson, Glover, Pesci, and Tucker. Could even rate this a guilty pleasure movie of sorts, disappointing as a sequel, not great, but watchable.

I agree. Casino Royale is one of the best Bond films. Woody Allen was great in it. Huh, what? Who's Daniel Craig?

I hate the 1st Jurassic Park. Every character makes the stupidest decisions they possibly can.

Don’t Breathe 2 was a massive letdown for me. The plot seemed forced for the “sympathetic” characters and did not hold a horror vibe throughout the film.

Equalizer 2 was a disappointment. It lacked decent story telling, the acting/casting was substandard, and was very predictable--the opposite of the first Equalizer film. I felt bad for Denzel Washington--he is better than this sequel.

I honestly think Aliens is overrated (I think it is a great film, but l also think I would like it more if I had never seen Alien). And I don’t understand the hate for Godfather 3, either. No it’s not as good, but it’s like Spider-Man 3: take out a few things and you have a better movie. The ending was so fitting, too.

Alien is a horror movie (one of the best) , Aliens is a sci-fi movie....both are great..

Lost world: Fuck the haters, I like it. WW 1984: If a DC movie reminds you of a Sam Raimi Spiderman film, ya dun fucked up. Attack of the clones: Fuck it with a chainsaw. Die another day: Never saw it, don't give a shit. GF 3: Fuck the haters, I love it. Space jam 2: I care more about the lint in my ass crack than the existence of that film. American psycho 2: I fucking hate the first movie. Rocky 4: That movie's awesome, not for any of the right reasons, granted. Matrix sequels: I fucking hate the first movie. Aliens>Alien

Aliens could not just replicate the original movie . It was more action oriented but being more slow and atmospheric does not make it more cerebral.

8:41 seems reasonable to assume they meant inanity

What’s so political about WW84? I think it’s a wack movie but I never felt like a political a message was getting shoved down my throat.
