Our editor has argued that nothing in Vertigo is as it seems. Valentino St. Germain wrote on his Medium Page: “Hitchcock intentionally twisted, made surreal and manipulated some of the most basic scenes in all of cinema as a constant reminder that we’re witnessing dreams and hallucinations. An ordinary visit to a bookstore experiences sudden and very noticeable light changes. A simple walk to a cemetery is so hazy and thick that it forces us to question it. A routine police query between a hotel manager and a detective turns into a ghost story. A kiss creates hallucinations. An “innocent” visit by a “distressed” girl to a man’s apartment places her in total darkness for a few moments. A woman coming out of the bathroom in her own hotel room, becomes a hazy but powerful green lightshow. A woman exiting a restaurant suddenly glows like a torch. Why is Vertigo constantly forcing us to question its validity?” He goes on to explain that the only “real” scene in the film is Scotty in the sanitarium in a semi-comatose state. “Vertigo is a nightmarish loop of imaginary events running continuously through the mind of a near-comatose patient.” His article is called: Has the 66-Year Riddle to VERTIGO, Hitchcock’s Masterpiece, Finally Been Solved?

It's hard not to compare Furiosa with Dune 2, I enjoyed Furiosa significantly more

I'm not smart enough to analyze a film at this level, but i was also frustrated. To me, the point of the film seemed to be that leonard berstein was a heel who scandalized his family through sexual activity that today would get him cancelled or criminalized if he crossed the wrong people, BUT we need to take the bad with the good because he was a genius. The first great American conductor, as the film forecasts. But it fails in this apparent goal, because bradley cooper (or probably anyone) is incapable if portraying the genius of a great conductor on screen. How does one direct or act that? So instead, we are just left with the heel, unable to control himself. So whats the true story?

That's the best review and most honest one I've seen so far. Everyone's bigging it up, but Linklater has more depth and edge than this. Nothing wrong with it, very entertaining and an enjoyable, better than average Netflix crowd pleaser, but a bit too safe and predictable for me. Better than about 75% of other Netflix garbage however, so that's a plus. That ending though . . . . blah, far too cheesy and Hollywood for me. I do absolutely agree that Linklater doesn't make bad films, but I prefer a lot of his others, so this sits solidly in the middle of the pack at 3/5.

This movie holds a flatline tone for nearly 2 1/2 hours, and during that time it constantly beats you over the head with a 2 by 4 of melodrama. And it is very wordy. I didn't like it at all.

The thing that really took me out of this movie was immoral joe not giving a damn whatever happened to furiosa and everyone pretending like furiosa wasn’t the little girl who escaped. 😂 Ps. Chris carried this film sooo hard.

The film was just filled with brand names in every shots… It just felt like watching cinematic advertisements, I know that it’s part of the world of professional athletes but it was kind forced.

Gosling and Blunt had chemistry, but the story didn't make a lot of sense. He was hurt, but didn't contact her, then she was upset, but Colt wants her in his life? Honestly, I feel like Jodi's selfishness would have worked, if she turned out to be The villain.

Dune 2 shows that Vill understands Herbert’s work, almost as well as a blind man understands colors.

Loved every bit of this movie and I wish it was marketed better. The first trailers looked like a bad cgi fest. It wasn’t. There is a level of artistry on display that is rarely matched these days and makes the grotesque beautiful. It earns its R rating. I watched Fury Road right after and Furiosa does make that film even richer. Hopefully this movie will also find its audience.

Just saw Furiosa - really enjoyed it. Not as great as Fury Road - which is a masterpiece to me. But still very entertaining!

** Spoiler Alert "** : After the scene of the shot, they talked in the car about the potencial risk of the deers, which it just react when in danger. One animal were shot up; so the wise father imagined what happened BEFORE see the corpse of his child on the ground. So He has an attack of fury against the incorporated man, who where on his side. Both attacks were Nature`s response itself! (sorry for my english).

I’ll be blunt. I’ll ignore your burbling about Katherine Hepburn and the current relevancy of the Oscars. I’m interested in the fact that in no point in your very long monologue did you not say 2 simple sentences: Smith’s behaviour was uncivilized . And Smith should’ve been ushered out of the ceremonies right away. Disappointing.

very impressive review! One of the most objective I've seen of this movie, and I was thinking about Dune part one while I watched it in the theatre just like you say here!!

Hemsworth puts a villain on the screen that is not only out-and-out evil but sympathetic--his parents were murdered too! "We're all victims of the wasteland" seems to be the message here, a powerful one.

Agree, the tone definitely sits within the Linklater comfort zone and it's just a little off kilter for me in this one given some of dark topics. Love Linklater but a little surprised by the strong reviews, for me it's in the pretty good range.

In defense of the film, it was nice to see something that felt fresh with very good young actors. Compared to most contemporary American films, Challengers had a lot of style and momentum and was a lot of fun to watch. I'm glad Guadagnino exists. He brings a beauty and sensuality to film and tries to push the boundaries of style. I also thought of the great Y Tu Mama Tambien but I think Challenger's was going for a lighter feel. I thought it was a great Summer movie.

Didn't know Chris Hemsworth could give a performance like this! I love how big of a pussy he slowly becomes throughout the movie lol. Something about it screamed Jack Sparrow but genuinely performed better and with a real heart and honestly he does a great job playing a complicated antagonist who seemingly wants to run the show but doesn't want to get his hands dirty in this very dirty and gritty world. Fucking awesome performance honestly, I hope he takes more roles like this one.

You could see the tragedy coming from far off but it was no easier to take. Gunshot, deer disease, deer retaliation? Did it matter that we didn’t know why the mother was missing? Tragedy is felt not figured. Pain and loss is not evil. Its part of caring and caring necessary for living.
You were born with a dancers body… you seem like such a cool girl, you’re smart, down to earth, & most importantly you’re genuinely yourself (I don’t know you, but this is what I imagine).
