Bad News for the Ford Mustang GTD Nurburgring Lap Time

October has come and gone and we never got an official Nurburgring lap time from Ford for the Mustang GTD. The last time Ford carried out high speed testing of the GTD on the Nurburgring was about two months ago in September, but in this track session the GTD was never being driven at the limits, and ford was most likely using this session to gather data for additional fine tuning of the aerodynamics. And then about a month later on October 16th, ford released this short teaser which consists of clips from a documentary about the GTD achieving a sub-seven minute lap time on the Nurburgring, but at this point, with no announcement, we can probably and sadly assume that Ford did not achieve their goal, and with winter moving in, Ford's attempt at setting an official lap time will most likely be put on hold until May of 2025.
So what happened? To the best of our knowledge, Ford scheduled a day to rent out the Nurburgring for a private session in which they were going to make their attempt to set a sub seven minute lap time, but on that day high winds and bad weather hit the track, so instead of attempting to set a lap time, ford used the track session to get footage of the GTD driving on the track.
Now apparently Ford has never heard the saying "talk softly and carry a big stick", because their stick was certainly big enough, but it seems as though their talk was even bigger, which got a lot of people, including myself, very excited about the GTDs performance, but it looks like ford kind of jumped the gun on this one, because to the best of our knowledge, no official lap time was set. And I don't even think they have ever attempted to set an official lap time yet, because from watching all of the footage of the GTD lapping the Nurburgring, the car was never driven at the limits, it was driven fast, but there was always clear restraint being shown.
And now, the chances that Ford have set their lap time are starting to look a little worse every day.
But another possibility is that during testing, Ford may have realized that the GTD simply would not be able to set a sub seven minute lap time. But we're gonna hope that this is not the case.
So what happens now? Well we know that the window to set a lap time at the Nurburgring has closed due to winter weather conditions, and at this point all we can do is be patient and wait until late spring for Ford to resume testing, which sucks, because Fords world wide media blitz of the GTD was extremely exciting, and it was great to see that beautiful car tearing up the tracks at car events all over the world, and also, Ford weren't the only ones boasting about the GTDs abilities, as I was certainly doing that myself. But regardless of all this, all we can do is wait another 6 months for Ford to resume testing and then another few weeks for the official announcement.
But on the plus side, the GTD did make it's first public appearance last weekend at a cars and coffee event in California
Now I don't want to completely give up hope on a GTD laptime, and maybe there will still be an announcement, and Ford is just waiting for Christmas, or some other event to make that announcement, but with so much time passing since October, it's hard not to assume the worst.
And I guess the question now is, in 6 months, assuming that Ford will have accomplished their goal, will people still care if the GTD completes a sub seven minute lap at the Nurburgring? And with so many other companies also attempting to set sub-second lap times, will setting a sub second lap time even be considered news in 2025 or will it simply be par for the course for top end sports cars?

As a Porsche GT2RS owner … experienced track member,I’ve had my butt handed to me by GT3RS guys in my group…it’s the pro group…highest level of my track club….I’ve never raced but have been lapping for 20 years…the cars are one thing,but the driver is another…coming from a person who knows the track,the only thing I can say is seat time counts! Will probably get faster as I acquire more seat time but I know there are just better more talented drivers…I’ve known and understood this a long time ago..unfortunately many amateurs don’t…and can be dangerous to others and themselves…especially in the latest greatest speed machine that becomes available on the market….my personal rules are simple..be safe,drive within your abilities,don’t hit the wall and obviously stay alive! At my track the fastest part I can get up to 170mph ….a mistake at that speed is very unforgiving…over the years I’ve seen many mistakes and unfortunately some that ended at funerals..at a lapping club …not races…for all the hardcore enthusiasts like me out there….be careful! I hope a funeral of a friend or someone you know doesn’t slow you down….I know it slowed down.

@Nicholas-d2l Yes you are speaking reality here. Not everybody has the skill level to know not only the cars limits and ability....but their own too. The danger levels indeed rise when understanding of tires, brakes, corner entry speed, overcorrecttion, or just a simple brain fart come into play. It is not really fun to push a car to a level you're having trouble maintaining. It can lead to all kinds of big mistakes out on the track. When you feel the danger of being on the edge and it's way out of your comfort zone....Ease up! Not everyday is a good driving to the limits day. Great drivers have focus and feel they depend on. They have off days too. It's not worth your life constantly pushing past your comfort zone. It's not much fun either.

That's the issue this car is probably more expensive than your gt2 and at the end of the day they overall platform is based off of a 30k car. You can tart it up all you want but 300k+ for a mustang is crazy, especially since mid-engine vettes are faster.

During this time it's best to wait. The weather in Germany is atrocious this time of year. Sometimes it rains nonstop for like a month straight. Also it took Mercedes 5 years to give us a lap time for the AMG One from the time it was announced. Be patient.

While sub 7 is still impressive it won't be that big of a deal in 2025. With the AMG one already going sub 6:30 and that being the new rumored Porsche target it sounds quite slow. This feels like a case of the Lexus LFA. By the time it came out it was old news and the world had already advanced so far. It sucks for Ford but i think it will be too late.

Ford isn't behind, they just never cared to test their cars at the nurburgring until now. It takes a ton of time and resources for an american company to test cars there, so it makes sense why they never did it. The 8 year old Ford GT is definitely a sub 7 car, and the Ford GT Mk IV is capable of beating the AMG One.

Take the latest generation Ford GT as an example. Very few people in the company knew about that car's existence before it was revealed. It essentially took everyone by surprise. The same was the case for the GTD before it was leaked and revealed shortly after. Being in the "inner circle" doesn't mean you're necessarily high-up in the food chain or in charge of the program. It just means you're a member of a team involved in designing, developing, and/or testing of the car.

The 992.2 GT3 has less torque than the .1 because of them and the .2 GT3RS will have less torque as well. You missed the point! Ford offered the GT which started at 500k and required an application. GM offered the C7 ZR1 that beat it around VIR for less than 1/3 rd of the cost! and no special application for approval. Next the GTD is the same Uber expensive and low production unobtainable car- GM offers C8 Z06 and new ZR1 that out performs lambos and Ferraris at 1/3 rd of cost. Moreover, compare stock road course performance of any C8 corvette and the value is unbeatable.

The problem with the GTD for me is the marketing gimmick comparing it to the GT3 RS. The GTD starts at $325k, the GT3 RS is $241k. The GTD is supercharged with over 800 hp to the GT3s naturally aspirated 518. The GTD isn't competition for the GT3, its competition for the GT2 which has similar power, is forced induction, and costs, well still a little less actually at $295k. Why have Ford not claimed it as a GT2 killer? Simple, they know the GT2 is going to run circles around it.

I think the GTD is an overpriced disappointment and Ford realizes it. They know it's not capable of a sub 7 minute and it's better it's not official. Here's the other part......... they're gunning for the GT3RS at the same price point, which is a sub 6:50 car. Then there's the ZR1, which is certain to be a sub 7 minute car. The ONLY thing the GTD has going for it is it's exhaust sound over the Porsche and the flat plane crank Corvette. That's a really tough sell. It's not going to be a merry Christmas and happy new year for Ford.

I'm pretty sure the plan was for Mustang GTDs to be delivered to customers before May of 2025. They made the promise of a sub 7 Nurburgring time the centerpiece of their marketing campaign for it. I'm pretty sure buyers will still pay up for the $300K+ price, but they are going to do so with annoyances and grudges if the goal has not been achieved. One way or another Ford needs to publicly address this very soon if they really are shut down for the winter. Perhaps they need to organize an event in SoCal to let race car reviewers drive it and see what it can do. It all looks great on paper but Ford needs to prove it somehow.

Che y already ran the ZR1 in final production form and is now testing its big brother the Zora. Yes, there is an even more powerful, 1200plus HP, AWD version of the C8 coming.
