Turns out...making your own lumber isn't particularly easy. We have five days to the frame raising (at the end of the day). This part is an endurance test, but it is just about to get a little easier!
Enjoy!
I'm sorry I didn't get more footage of the breakfast, kitchen people. In case you'll forgive me, here are two kitchen tips from the Fouch Family!!!
1. If you want to cook lambs quarters or any other greens and have them taste really garlicky... Warm your oil in your cast iron pan. Add sliced garlic cloves to the oil and heat them until they're just starting to darken. Then add the greens and -- here's the trick -- quickly toss them so that the garlic-flavored oil coats them BEFORE they start to wilt. You have about 60 seconds. That way the garlic flavor gets on the leaves and not on the water that they're shedding. Also, if your pan is hot and your greens are getting dry instead of perfectly wilted you can add a little water after that 60 seconds of flavor-soaking time and you won't lose your garlic flavor.
You're welcome.
AND...If all you have for dinner is beans and rice and tortillas (and maybe lamb's quarters), you can make quick chips by cutting the tortillas into triangles and frying them lightly in vegetable oil. You have to have lots of oil and get it pretty hot, so be careful, but this trick has put smiles on my kids' faces a few times when Nick is not cooking and all I have is beans and rice...and lambs quarters. :)
