My guess is the width of the opening and maybe a significantly large enough number of them charging down the middle at the right time managed to split the pikes in half and make them panic.

I believe the archers got buff in the sense of two things. 1: if you watch the video you'll notice that they do (basic archers) some chip damage to the shield guys. 2: in the trailer to this expansion it showed archers knocking shield guys of the boat so there knock back properly got buffed as well. Also keep the good content coming.

Archers a) are incredibly powerful once levelled up, b) have to be used aggressively, c) are vital to finishing the game, d) are essential against the jumpy double-sword guys who need to be shot off the boats before they disembark.

@@milanstevic8424 They are also the worst early game unit. Their accuracy and fire rate is trash, so you're lucky if they get a single kill on any given island. My hard difficulty playthrough typically skips archers entirely until I have enough coins floating around to get them to elite immediately because only then are they actually better than the infantry and pikemen alternatives.

@@tournesol99 archers are supposed to be used only as a support unit, at least until the point you need to shoot the guys off their boats. the placing is also important, because the arrow coming at an angle can one-shot the model by pushing it off the boat.

@@milanstevic8424 Yes. But knockback is very weak at lower ranks, making that largely irrelevant. And they are awful at hitting targets at all, let alone ones on the move. So honestly I just find having three infantry units and a set of pikes far more useful in the early game than a unit of archers. Three infantry can handle pretty much anything the early game throws at you, and makes it far less likely you'll be overwhelmed. You can defend just about any island with them. The only advantage archers have in the early game is that they counter enemy archers. Enemy archers won't move if they have a target to shoot at. So position infantry close to bait them, but don't have them attack as lower ranks will be vulnerable to arrows if they run forward, and the archers will sit there shooting at their shields forever. Position your archers slightly further away and they will be able to pick off all the archers without you losing a single casualty.

@@tournesol99 I won't argue against what you're saying. All fair points. But I think you're missing to acknowledge that what you describe is essentially what archer _stands for_ . It's not intended to be a front unit or a powerful unit, and definitely not intended to be a unit you solely rely upon. So what you describe is like that by design, in my opinion, and it's even historically accurate (even though the game is entirely fictional). Yes, we can disassemble the game philosophically and nitpick its design choices, but this is a very simple and mechanically elegant game. All you need is a general purpose and a clear benefit of having an archer, which is one of only three units in the game, to explain away everything. Mostly because the other two units are pretty much the more obvious ones to understand and cope with. That said, my original point was to highlight the importance of the archer, and not to diminish the utility of the other two units. In my opinion, all three are very well balanced. After I learned the ropes, I've finished the game cca 30 times, and not once I had the feeling of something being overpowered, underpowered, needless, or in need of redesign. So, again, imho, there is no need for "the only advantage xxx has ... ", there is a clear advantage when there is a clear advantage, you don't need to weigh the advantages as if they are somehow disconnected from each other, because whatever you do, you ultimately do want to have at least one archer unit, and fully upgraded, the sooner the better. The overall design here is to let you choose exactly how to manage this part of the game (roster and upgrades), and the archers are very well integrated especially when you consider their particular strengths (against certain units, in specific tactical combinations, or as a general support preferably from higher ground), regardless of how situational these strengths might be.

All the high ground preference left your troops really under leveled pretty early on. Really need to try to defend all houses unless you're getting murdered. high ground choke points are really only great for pikes, otherwise you need to sandwich or outnumber enemy infantry with your infantry.

It's nice to see that the devs have apparently listened to players and really targeted this update at the games weaknesses. Having intel on the enemies on each island is invaluable when you have limited forces. Putting gold in a common pool instead of assigning it specifically to commanders makes decisions about unit progression a little more forgiving if you make a mistake. And new enemies that can nerf pikes helps keep the game interesting and engaging.

Keep your eyes on pink squad at 49:16. It looks like the pikes were facing the wrong way, or at least that the commander was facing south. That's why the squad was overwhelmed, and only two of the enemy group was killed. Probably some wonky AI there.

I blame the game, as even Michael Jordan in his prime couldn't jump over pikes, as even if you jumped over the spears in the front there are more behind pointing slightly up, so you would land into them. So bacillary you would jump and gravity would help you to impale your self onto the other spears behind.

I find that pikes are pretty horrible IMO. They are great against larger melee units, but ultra-vulnerable to archers and throwing axes. My basic build is two veteran swords and two veteran arrows. On some maps I will substitute a archer for a pike if decisive choke point. I'm still new at this game though.

archers get upgrade priority. basics cant hit for sh*t. veterans have significantly tighter arrow spread. elites become so accurate they get chance to break shields. be mobile with archers. run them all the way to the front before the enemy even get to land. veterans and elites can knock enemy off the boats and drown them. and super good for thinning out massive amounts of basic and 2swords. (note: all shields can only block one threat. meaning when fighting your melee troops, enemies are vulnerable to arrow fire. same goes for your infantry which is why they die fighting archers. SEND MORE SWORDS TO HUNT ARCHERS)PS: another good way to kill archers is to put shields in front to tank arrows and archers behind to snipe enemies PPS: diamond shields fight as good as round shields but have one charge of throwing axe. swords can take them down fine when in formation. PPPS: grey giants causes fear infantry have trouble fighting them. have pikes brace for them. PPPPS: 2swords pounce can be blocked by shields but will disrupt formations making troops vulnerable.PPPPPS: its actually better to wait for enemy to approach on flat ground when swords. they parry better and use their numbers better. PPPPPPS: from my experience, only pikes gain significant advantage on chokepoints. you want open space for your swords. PPPPPPPS: pike charge is actually super good. it KILLS EVERYTHING in its path and doesn't affect friendlies. PPPPPPPPS: numbers is a very important resource. try to regenerate when you get the chance even if the unit is only down 1 PPPPPPPPPS: pikes are good against large numbers especially at chokepoints. beware of massive numbers on flat ground. have a second pike right next to them to help out or a unit of swords behind them in case they get overrun. PULL THEM BACK IMMEDIATELY IF YOU SEE THE PIKES POINTING UP. (consider using pike charge against large numbers on flat ground)

Raiding is a big part an in this case the player is purely defensive in nature. Besides that theres a bunch of other hints that the players are brits, and the attackers are the norse-men; Sigils, armor design, naming conventions and such

Vikings meaning raiders means that they're the vikings come to collect your annual viking taxes to fund future viking raids. Your just a standard norseman as long as your on defense.

@@gargoyles9999 In simplest terms yes. There is technically a difference. Viking is a verb I believe that loosely means "To raid" but as far as I'm aware it's a specific type of raid or something. Often times the stuff stolen during the raiding season would make it's way back too-a lot of the loot was in the form of goods or people so these would be sold to merchants back home who often sold along the same routes the vikings traveled. So it's completely possible for a completely unrelated merchant to sell you back your fancy brass pitcher you used for dinner parties. Generally vikings only applies when your pillaging and looting every other time your just a norseman or scandanavian or whatever the local term was. And generally being raided wasn't all that bad as it meant your place was soon to be added to trade charts with a record of your wealth-if your wealthy enough to raid your wealthy enough to trade. And trade meant you regained wealth faster to raid in the future so was a good way to pad the nest you got your eggs from.

Like how the raiding groups in Fallout are called “Raiders” - because they raid.
