I'm glad you said what you said at 13:33: "Everything we wanted to do was a fight... we basically have a live recording full of mistakes and sounds awful", yeah, because you weren't prepared for the studio and ran out of time. Had you been prepared, the engineer wouldn't have had to rush you through your allocated time to get a subpar result. The audacity to ask whether you should get a refund or leave a bad review when you fucked up is insane. Take some responsibility for yourselves.

I loved your ass-handing to the band from the UK who recorded live in the analog studio. Well said! I am a drummer, and I am super self-aware of my limitations. Wish I had a Delorian with a flux capacitor to go back to my 12 year-old self and tell him to fall in love with the metronome. But knowing is half the battle, I know what I need to work on. Someday I would love to record a solid record live off the studio floor as well. Thanks for the amazing content!

Most of the musicians I have played with across the US have either had pot or alcohol addictions and were convinced I was the problem on whatever instrument I would be playing at the time when they either zoned out or were playing so bad and didn't realize they weren't playing the actual song. Some people think if you play an instrument you need to be high or drunk. With recent bands, I have been trying to explain simple things that no one wants to learn and then bitch when they need to spend money to get someone to record them, when they think you should only pay when you start making money. I miss the small band I played with back home in Norway. Skål! And thanks for being awesome.

I spent almost two years trying to record an 8 song album with my band in my little home studio but we only got four songs finished... While I was running around being producer and engineer (on top of singer, guitarist, and primary songwriter) my bandmates would show up late, leave early, and spend the entire session dipping out to smoke pot or grab another beer. I would then have to air out the space and clean up their empties after they left. The only reason I put up with it is because it was my band and my friends. If I showed up to a professional studio and they acted like that, I'd probably walk out in embarrassment or take my tracks and hire a couple guys off fiverr and finish the album myself...

Not once has he shown up and played the material to practice on his own. It always ends up as me getting infuriated and walking through the same verse for 30 minutes before losing it and shutting down only to go back on my own and handle it. The best part is the latest excuse: "I'm just not good at different time signatures. I write everything in 4/4." Stfu and play the fucking song right! Anyways, I feel your pain.

He demanded we not use the songs which were, as I say, not entirely his, but started with his basic idea. Yeah he was told to fuck off, but I assured him he would get his "fair share of fuck all" because we continued to play them.

Having gone to school for Music Business... anyone can feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, though I think, legally speaking, that as long as the "Entity" of the band is still together, they can still perform those songs. Same as if he went off to do a solo project, he too can perform those songs. Kind of like how Stephen Pearcy can do the Ratt songs, as Stephen Pearcy, or when Vince Neil went solo, was able to perform Motley Crue songs. Though Motley Crue could also do their "Vince Neil" songs, even though John Corabi was the lead singer. Or David Lee Roth without Van Halen and Van Halen with Gary Cherone.

While the V30 thing may be getting old, I would like a video comparing the sound coming out of different V30s through the same cab and mic setup. So different years, maybe different Cab brands (Mesa V30 vs Marshall V30 vs Harley Benton's V30...etc) and maybe some V30 alternatives like the WGS Veteran and Retro 30s and Orange Voice of the World (read these are based on V30s, but I don't know how true it is). I know it was mentioned in an earlier episode that when and where the V30 came from can dramatically shift the sound and I think that would be a neat experiment to see if it hasn't already been done.

13:33 That guy's comment really made me laugh. He did not seem to know at all the difference between analog and digital recordings. He should watch a year and a half in the life of metallica part one. The black album was recorded on analog tape. There is a sequence that shows the engineer editing takes together. The tape needed to be precisely cut and put back together with the tape from another take. Imagine the time it takes to do that. Then you add the time to hunt for the best parts in multiple takes. Plus, you must pay for the tape you're using. More takes equals more tape. You need to have deep pockets to do that. In my opinion, for the minimal difference in sound between analog and digital; recording digital it's just the way to go. Way easier and cheaper.

Me on the other hand, I have a trusty Ibanez RG550 (90s model), a tiny little scarlet solo interface, a basic digitec digital effects pedal for distortion, and just GarageBand on the Mac. All I need is my creativity, and I can for sure make it sound good. I double track everything when it’s right, and tweak effect settings depending on the song. I just finished a 7 song album that in my opinion sounds quite good. All I’m trying to say is that it doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive to work. Just rock on 🤘

Completely agree on the analog part. It also depends on the sound you’re going for. I’ve been at a studio where everything became over processed, and it took way longer, and I’ve been to studio’s where we recorded live on the floor. Personally, I preferred the studio that we recorded live. The thing you have to understand is that, in these situations, your band isn’t relying on time align, auto tune, compression, or playing to a click. It is a much more accurate representation of your band live, and any mistakes WILL show. If you want a clear, unprocessed sound that’s your band, that’s great, go for it. Just know the implications of what you’re signing up for and make sure you’re ready

Hi Glenn! Sometime you talked about certain skills every recording engineer should have or something to that effect. You mentioned the ability to solder as being one of them. I must say that I whole-heartedly agree! However, to go along with that skill, as someone who has worked aircraft electronics for 30+ years, I'd also recommend learning how to use a multimeter. With that skill you can check short circuits, open circuits, AC and DC voltages, ohm readings on resistors, transistor problems, and a whole host of other things that having that skill could save you money on costly repairs by being able to diagnose and possibly repair yourself. Also, this and some other channels has ispirired me to take up the guitar. I know that at the age that I am starting (55) I probably won't get to a professional level but it will keep my mind working as I keep practicing into retirement. Thank you for the inspiration! Right now I am just getting a cheap Ibanez JEM knock off that comes in a kit form. I'll eventually replace the pickups as I get better. Thanks for the inspiration! Works are considered copyrighted as soon as you put them on a medium with a time and date stamp on it. The government will automatically protect your work in court as long as you can prove you released it first. The point of copyrighting music is to give you the ability to license it to other people. As long as you don't plan on having your song in a movie or a commercial, then you don't have to worry about copyrighting it ever. You would still be able to bring up a tort if you find someone stealing it.

Sleeper Peavey metal amp: Peavey Ultra. It's not pretty or flashy. You will get zero street cred playing one live like you would a Revv or whatever but you can get brutality out of it with a good cab/speaker and it will not break the bank. I see them for sale for 400ish bucks.

I' very much like that you are pushing the importance of good speakers/cabs! I'm kind of addicted to checking out new speakers, right now I have 8 different speakers and only 2 cabs. I'd also suggest you try some different Jensen speakers as they have some very cool options! Maybe also try to get Ignazio from Jensen on the show.

I left a Viking metal band not too long ago because they kept getting sloshed before gigs. Final straw was when the vocalist got so drunk that he was slurring his words & he kept accepting shots from people in the bar, eventually he blew chunks beside the drums. Logically I can’t get mad about unprofessionalism then turn around & be unprofessional as well by unplugging & just walking off, so finished the gig (hands down the worst gig I’ve ever been part of) & while we were packing up it became apparent that nothing was going to improve with them, so I left the band. For the younger musicians DO NOT get wasted at or before shows you’re not Dimebag & definitely don’t do that while recording at a studio you’re stepping into someone else’s place of business, have some respect.

Yea... had a bandmate once who would get drunk all the time and smoke weed. Dont get me wrong, I am definitely a drinker, but when it's time to go, it's time to go. However, this guy would use it as some sort of crutch, as though it gave him access to being a better musician. Often citing the guys from GNR, Mötley Crüe and a lot of other bands we looked upon rather fondly, as examples of "How it's done." Leaving me to finally break it to him that "Yes... but you ARENT Slash, or Duff, or Eddie Van Halen." Reminding him that "These guys play at a level of 80 to 100... you're at like level 40. So even when they're completely topped off on heroin, they're still better than you on your best day... so why hinder yourself??? Why put yourself at such a disadvantage???" As in an attempt to incline him to get better, so that he can get into the range of them being topped off on heroin. And then better... and then better. Regardless, that statement was pretty much the end of us. I later found out from someone who was in a band with him (The second, after the one with me) and dude still had the same issues. What broke them up, was that he got a DUI and the cop found like an ounce of weed in the car. I can honestly say that it truly saddens me to see that guy's trajectory. He could have been so great, but thought he'd put the "star" before the "rock" and it cost him dearly. Seriously, if he could have sanded the edges off, he would have been something special. Which is why I hung in there with him... as I thought there'd be a point where he'd take things just a liiiiiittle more seriously. Though the lesson I keep learning with bandmates, is that you can't want good things for people more than they do.

Glenn, an underrated speaker that might be worth trying out is the Celestion G12K-100. I have a Diezel 4x12 with a quad of those, and the low end punch is insane.

Hi Glen, I hope Julie's health is on the mend, It's great that you're supporting her so well. Take good care of yourself, caring is hard work. I've been listening to loads of your stuff (and recomending it) for the last few weeks. Really enjoyed your knowledge and humour. Question though, if tonewood is a myth, which makes no difference, and pickups don't matter, then what is it that you like in some guitars and dislike in others. Any decent tech can set up a guitar to play well as long as the geometry isn't knackered so I 'm not considering setip here. Is it just the ergonomics of the guitar or the particular neck carve, or even the appearance? Thanks

Hi Glen - Is there a video out there or anything showing your mic setup for these anamorphic lens videos? Is it some sort of shotgun mic off screen? I do a lot of “yelling” when I talk and the way your mic handles distortion is perfect. Please lemme know!

Glenn! I listen to your show consistently, every week for the past 3 years and love it! I play the videos and just listen to the audio while I drive for work. Have you ever considered doing a longer form podcast for us podcast nerds? I’d love to hear you be able to go a little more in depth on things (and not slay my phones battery playing videos that I’m just listening to!). Cheers from the Canada of the US, Minnesota!

True story. My old band Waiting for a Miracle wrote and recorded an album back in 2006. Split up since then, but Imagine our surprise when we found a *very similarly* sounding song, named the same thing, as…Five Finger Death Punch. The song is called “Mother May I”. Listen to the chorus of both.

I found an IR pack of the Celestion EVH and they sound pretty killer. I’m definitely going to give them a try. I’ve been pretty set on my V30 IRs but I’ve been really trying to expand my sound like you always suggest. This might do the trick!

Falling asleep during Terry Bozio's solo.......... LMFAO! Glen, I bought an Orange 2x12 open back with Celestion Neo Speakers because of the tone with the back open. The same cab with the closed back sounded totally different. What, exactly, does closing the back of the cab do? What is preferred for recording, or does it really matter?
@jeremysmetana85832 жыл бұрын
Speaking as a person who works in contracts and with copyright, I would say, yes you should care about that stuff. Don't freak out about it. Don't worry overmuch about it - at first - but do care about it, and do learn about it. It could very well become an issue, not so much in your desire to sue somebody, but more likely in your need to defend your right to use your own stuff, or if-and-when the time comes to sign something (whether an actual contract with a record company, or just a click-through on a distribution site). It could quickly become very important to you. The sooner you begin to learn about it, the sooner you will feel at ease with navigating it. It can become very complicated, very quickly. Learn about it now, so you don't HAVE to panic if the shit should hit the fan.

Interesting point with the analogue recording and tonewood and "tone" in general... It doesn't matter how good your gear is or how expensive it is or if the tubes are producing cork-sniffing perfection if the playing sucks. There's no pickup or speaker or microphone that will make you play in the right key. Those little finishing touches of tone need to be the cherry on top of the sundae. If the ice cream is crap, you still just have a turd with a cherry on it.

As a raging pothead myself, I will tell you right now: *you do not "feel" it better, nor are you more creative when you're fucked up.* That's what lazy, undisciplined boors say to justify their lack of respect for their craft. It makes you worse at performing things. Save that shit for when you're not on the producer's clock.

On the CPAP and sleeping, I also fought the apnea and CPAP. What actually fixed it for me was sinus surgery. I guess the CPAP was trying to push air through a completely blocked up nose. Now I sleep through the whole night. And yes about the analogue studio. Time alignment is a pain. I don’t mind doing it on one or two notes or beats (I use two tape machines with a Lynx synchronizer) but it takes a few minutes per ‘fix’. My limit is two or three edits per song. Bands that are well rehearsed seem to do well on tape. But a lot of bands are not good enough to record on tape. I agree, the band’s preparation is critical.

Here's the exercise I did for getting my fingers to work independently (and you can do it anywhere): Place your hand palm-down on a surface (desk, your thigh, pretty much anything). One finger at a time, stretch the finger out to full length, then curl it back in toward your palm. A few weeks of this made an insane difference in my finger independence.

On things that capture and reproduce sounds: Mics, pickups, loudspeakers... They are *transducers*. Transducers convert signals (audio in our case) from one form to another. If your transducers can't capture the sound and reproduce it well, then nothing else you stack around them or bolt them to is going to matter*. * Of course you can go for a lo-fi sound or mangle a sound any way you want to. But like Gleeeennnnnnn has indicated many times when talking about recording "dry" guitar inputs, if you record a sonically clean signal, you can mangle it any and every way you want later. Record a pre-mangled sound and that's all you've got to work with later. Now recording guitar from a speaker is its own kind of mangling, so keep that in mind and grab that dry input too :)

Body sound? Years ago I saw a demo by a company that made a piezo bridge (PU) that was very expensive and sounded dreamy. Then they mounted the pickup on a concrete block with a neck and it was just as dreamy.

Hey Glenn, ever thought of doing a 'tonewood' type video about drum shells? Might not be your ball park, but I think it would be interesting to know if it makes much of a difference in a mix. It could be that a decent drum kit, with new skins, PLAYED WELL, is all that matters??
