Hen Peckedlizard sorry, I guess “unhealthy” or even “dangerous” would be more appropriate terms.

what killed your catalpa.. I have a maple that has that same bark disease, and lost some heeeeuge branches right next to my catalpa.. here it is may 11, and the catalpa has not budded leaves.. I hope you comment back, leave a heart so my notifications will show me you replied... thnx

Felix I can’t say for sure other than old age. It appeared to have dead leaders in it for quite some time. A codominant stem that water could get in and freeze and expand, as well as previous storm damage.
