If it's a big franchise, probably. Which is why I went with an independent. Made it clear from the outset that I wanted to learn to drive and we can focus on the test later. Still taught me turn in the road, though not reversing around the corner. Did cover a bit of I.A.M. stuff too that the DVSA don't exactly shout about.

Please be careful on your Rhetoric, one of the first conversations I have with my pupil is to inform them that I do NOT teach people to pass driving tests but how to drive carefully and safely on the Highway, and only when that standard is achieved do they go on to take their test. So please don’t tar all Instructors with your ideas. Thanks

I passed my test recently, the reason they don't teach three point turns anymore, is because they consider reverse bay parking and parallel parking to be the same manoeuvre. Though my instructor taught me anyway. They no longer teach you to reverse into smaller roads either.

7:55 regarding phones in cradles, I believe there are three laws that apply: 1. Road Vehicles Construction & Use 1986 (amendment 2 2022) Regulation 110: the well known can't-use-it-if-hand-held, updated in 2022 so that 'using' doesn't just involve communicating, but also illuminating the screen or unlocking device etc. Just having it in you hand is still ok though (if you just moved it without illuminating the screen - bit dicey if you have 'raise to wake' enabled!). 2. Road Vehicle Construction & Use 1986 Regulation 109: this is not widely known, but this regulation makes it illegal to display on a 'cinematic screen' information that is not related to the vehicle, it's position on the road (e.g. reversing camera) or navigation. This applies whether mounted or not. So technically, it appears to be illegal to use a mounted phone for any other purpose. This even caught the police out, as their in-car ANPR system had to be redesigned as the driver was able to see ANPR information, which would have breached this law. 3. Road Traffic Act 1988 Section 3: your classic careless driving, where the offence occurs if the driving falls below the standard of a careful and competent driver.

I raised the issue of Regulation 109 and Smartphones with the Police in December 2018. Initially the Police replied saying Regulation 110 allows the driver to view a Smartphone when driving. A day or two later they changed their minds. I received a short email from the Police Officer stating "I agree, you are right!" What followed - Police Officers were issued with a waring stating that if they view the ANPR screens when driving, they would be committing an OFFENCE under Reg.109. In November 2020, a amendment (Vehicle Special Order VSO) was passed in Parliament, giving special dispensation to the Police, so that they could drive their Police cars legally.

Re: Clip #1 - I'm reliably informed that a lot of Highways Authorities no longer paint right turn arrows on the approach lanes to traffic islands because a lot of drivers have literally been understanding this as an instruction to immediately turn right without going round the island first, i.e. turning (anti-clockwise) straight into oncoming traffic.

As far as I'm aware you are allowed to operate your phone hands free, in a cradle or through the car touchscreen, if it is safe to do so. this is from the RAC site... Hands-free phone use: the law There are two things to remember here: You cannot hold your phone when behind the wheel, even momentarily (this includes when supervising a learner driver). To use your phone for communication you must have hands-free access. Any hands-free devices should be fully set up before you drive, so you can take calls without handling the device. Any device must not block the view of the road. In an August 2019 report, the Commons Transport Committee put forward their case for banning the use of hands-free kits. They suggested that using the technology carries the same risk of collision as a hand-held phone. The government said there are no plans to introduce a ban. The police still have the power to stop you if they believe you have been distracted by using a mobile phone while driving, even if it’s fully hands-free.

Hi Tony, It's my understanding that if your mobile is in a cradle you are not allowed to 'manipulate' it. In other words you can press a button(or virtual button) to end a call or to switch the phone off but you cannot dial a number or touch it for any other reason. If the police consider using the phone at all, even pressing a button, causes your driving to become, inconsiderate, careless or dangerous then it becomes an offence. Re the female berk in a Merc. perhaps her name is Mother Brown and she has her knees up! Sorry about that, I'll go and have lie down in a darkened room. Keep up your excellent work.

I have a mini RAB near me which was put in at a former T junction onto a main road. When approaching along main road from one direction drivers need to make a significant effort to go around by steering to the left (as per your first lesson). Not only do most of them go over or even straddle the circular marking, many go as far as to completely cut the corner and drive the wrong side which results in them effectively exiting on the wrong side of the road. No accidents that I am aware of but it can only be a matter of time when the "short cut" turns into the "long goodbye"

I thought that the hatched areas replaced solid traffic islands because they were a cheaper way of separating traffic. Consequently one should rarely if ever drive on them.
@ianmason.
@ianmason. 3 ай бұрын
That's true if they have a solid white line around them, before they cheaped out those would have been raised islands. The ones with a dashed white line are used to funnel traffic away from things like a sheltered spot to wait to make a right turn - those are OK to drive over the hatchings if you are going to join the queue turning right (you choice is between holding up traffic or driving on the hatchings so it becomes necessary to drive on the hatchings to give consideration to other traffic).

You can't text (read or type) while driving. You should not have your phone on a cradle unless it's for GPS. The cradles should not be stuck on the windshield, or set up in front of it. The cellphone companies should have the phones to automatically deactivate if the GPS senses that you're walking or driving, and stay deactivated for 10 minutes after you've stopped moving, in case you were tempted to text on a red light. If you need your GPS while moving, set it up before starting to move. With these setting, we would save a lot of damage, wounds and lives.

on said topic of bicyclists, let's also remind us of the fact that - whilst I don't condone any stupid behaviour by cyclists - they are JUST cyclists. They can mostly harm themselves. Compared to the 2 tonne metal machines we drive around all willy-nilly... Giving you UK stats, there were 91 deaths & 4056 seriously injured by bicyclists (correction, that's actually bicyclists that died themselves, so the real number is even less). Whilst cars on the other hand... 1766 deaths & nearly 29000 seriously injured. Speaking generally, 99% of deaths are caused by a motorized vehicle. Again, not condoning any stupidity from anyone, but where should our focus really be? I see many UK car drivers complaining about cyclists. And whilst it IS a problem, they're insanely less likely to cause harm. So I wouldn't waste TOO much energy on it. Some though, of course. Idiots are still idiots...

@leme3503 that's exactly my view and LDC really does get his knickers in a regular twist over cyclists. There is an allowance in some countries for cyclists to go through red lights under certain circumstances and you will often see that a cyclists will stop whilst traffic is moving but when stopped they then go through even though lights are red. This is a very low risk situation. Compare that to LDC who sets off from traffic lights when pedestrians are in front of him and who are going to be in front is far more dangerous and is simply reckless driving. And this is pointed out to LDC by quite a few other contributors.

9:20 Why even 2 sets of lights? Just put a pedestrian crossing at the junction? This seems utterly useless and unnecessary.. Fkn UK road design strikes again.

From the government website: Using devices hands-free You can use devices with hands-free access, as long as you do not hold them at any time during usage. Hands-free access means using, for example: a Bluetooth headset voice command a dashboard holder or mat a windscreen mount a built-in sat nav The device must not block your view of the road and traffic ahead.

The painted roundabouts on the road are painted so you can go over them as the highways accept that not all vehicles can make a clean going around due to the tightness of the turn, they are put there as muppets with yellow badge of death never give way……

@BlackBeltBarrister covered mobile phone usage in cradles in his video kzbin.info/www/bejne/pHbUlGawqtWfhZY where his general guidance was that you are allowed to use devices so long as they are in cradles as the offence is using them whilst they are held in the hand. He did caveat the advice by saying to use them as sparingly as possible and that it would still be possible to be found to be not paying due care and attention if your use of the device contributed to some accident, etc..

4:21 - that statement is NOT correct. Driving instructors SHOULD still teach turn in the road and reversing around corners. They are supposed to teach you how to drive, NOT just how to pass the test. However, some instructors drive BMW's so you know how that's gonna go don't you.

i Watch a lot of driving instructors on KZbin and I've got to say some are absolutely shocking they video themselves sitting in the car with their student next to them and their student isn't even holding the steering wheel properly and they don't even say anything to them, and that's just basic stuff. I watch a lot of Ashley Neal's videos and he is good very good I highly recommend him because you can see that he is teaching driving not just teaching someone to pass a driving test, he teaches exactly the same way that I was taught so many years ago.

@@thelondondashcam Well Ashley Neal is a little up his own ass and he did own a BMW and a Tossler, sorry, Tesla so that might tell you something. These days holding the steering wheel correctly, i assume you mean 10 to two etc isn't a thing. As long as you can control the car and it goes where you require it to it's not an issue. I guess you cross you hands occasionally?

@@xusiaxod6255if you are going to slate Ashley, I really think you need to give a lot more substance than just say "up his own arse". Where is he, how is he, why is he 'up his own arse'. His hand position was something that did grate with me but he recently did a very good video concentrating solely on that topic. Remember that the advice to adopt a ten to two position came in way before cars had power steering and it was vital to maintain two hands in that position to be able to maneuver properly. It is not so vital with power steering.
