One of the things I was noticing (which I've been told to be careful about as well) is belting and tilting the head back. More often when singers are doing that, their belts are more unstable but when they tuck their chin in or tilt their whole body back, there's usually more support. She is also as consistent as some of the other singers in the 'good' category (Perrie, Demi, etc.). Her technique isn't the best but it's not nearly as bad as people think it is. It failed her because she lacked confidence. She was overlooked a lot in the early years of Little Mix's career. I edited my comment for that as well. I wouldn't put Ailee with JoJo because, even though both of them are tied as far as diaphragm engagement, vibrato, resonance and range go, Ailee tends to carry a bit too much tension above E5/F5 while JoJo has freedom up to at least F#5.

"Belting" is a bit of a debated term. In classical singing a "Belt" has more to do with the level of chord closure and using your entire lower register (chest voice) without pushing or mixing. Contemporary singers use the term "belt" to include middlevoice/mixed voice singing. I don't think people know that Lower Register in classical singing translates to Chestvoice In contemporary, Middle Register translates to "Mix" and Upper Register translates to headvoice. In terms of "technique" a good belt is essentially anything that is has a large sound column and doesn't require a mic to carry. SO I AGREE WITH THIS ENTIRE VID tbh..
@sandy_carpetsthesecond50132 жыл бұрын
I mean... Kind of? Ariana's classified as a good belter, but she doesn't have a lot of volume output- If anything, Ariana actually really pulls back on her volume output in order to maintain her tonal quality. Pretty much, In contemporary, a belt is just a vocal style resembling a shout- It doesn't have to be loud to be good in terms of contemporary, It just has to be free enough to have a ring or tonal consistency.
@Sloppyjoey12 жыл бұрын
@@sandy_carpetsthesecond5013 My only issue with the contemporary definition of 'belting' is that a good ear can definitely still discern the difference between what the mic creates and what the body creates. Historically, a belt is purely lower register (chest voice) but on a note that's relatively high for that register. I get that contemporary changed the game, but I feel that if we're including middle voice (vocal mix) we should at least only classify chest dominant sound as the belts. I consider Ariana an exception to the rule because her 'belts' are incredibly free and healthy. But a singer like Adele is mic reliant for her 'big' sound. Gaga would blow Adele out of the water in pure resonance wither her chest voice.
@sandy_carpetsthesecond50132 жыл бұрын
@Joseph Harris I mean, there are different kinds of mixes though and a hundred different aproaches to mixing- a few of them not even involving blending the two registers. The issue with Contemporary is that people confuse different genre techniques and different labels. No technique label is set in stone sue to that, that combined with different Contemporary genres using the same labels, it's hard to indentify and differentiate two different techniques when it's all just seen as belting or mixing.
@Sloppyjoey12 жыл бұрын
@@sandy_carpetsthesecond5013 I only say this because, if we don't apply an objective standard than we cannot effectively communicate, teach, explain, or learn. A "Belt" is historically purely using your lower register to product high notes. There's nothing objectively wrong about using middle voice / mix, but comparing a belt (chest voice) to vocal mix (middle voice) is inherently comparing apples and oranges. For example, Gaga at 1:20 is utilizing a true belt technique (in the historic sense of the word.) BUT If you're teaching someone to belt, and then also show them Dua Lipa at 3:14 and then refer to her highly mixed note as a "belt" you will confuse and actually set the learner back. The truth is, Lady Gaga was belting and Dua Lipa wasn't. A belt will always have a horizontal sound column, mixing will always have a lateral sound column. They're still, technically, different. I actually do see the points you made and I've modified my opinion to include good vocal mixes that at least simulate the dense/explosive qualities of a belt. Some singers IE: Beyonce have such powerful and controlled vocal mixing that no one knows where each of her registers begins or ends!

Queen of belting might have to go to Ariana in terms of how high she can go without not sounding not good because, even when she does “make mistakes” she still sounds good, argue with yourself
@butterflyera7652 жыл бұрын
she does have great tonal quality that a lot of her fails really go over peoples heads.

@Nasir Germain you could've said that without the "couldn't hold a candle to them" comment. Y'all be so weird and hateful for no reason
@filipmarinkovic62812 жыл бұрын
@@aisha9098 yeah, also imo Ariana is way better than SoHyang, simply bc Ariana's belts sound way better and not scream-ish plus they are not just sustained, Ariana addd an extra belt in a song every half a minute lol
@aisha90982 жыл бұрын
@@filipmarinkovic6281 yea and her technique in belting has improved a lot

How is Ariana the queen of belting? you guys just make up anything to make her look good at this point. she doesn’t even have good technique in her upper belts, yall just think she sounds pretty ….

Thanks for adding Lara Fabian and Mariah carey as experts when is come to vocal technique. I'm agree with you except for the Eb Jessie J's was way better than Beyoncé's showed on this video, it sounded pushed. Great video✌

Yeah Jessie's Eb5 was very well supported

Tone wise, Mariah all over the spectrum. Demi on her upper belts is just gorgeous, I'm not even a fan. But it's so open and resonant, just yum!

To be fair, I personally feel like some of these were sung in mixed vocals rather than a full blown belt, but again that's just my personal opinion. I'm still learning about vocal techniques and if I'm wrong, please feel free to tell me what y'all think. I'm interested in hearing about it.

in Eb5, I love Beyoncé but I think Jessie J's sounded a little healthier.
