I never heard of texel throat until you mentioned it on your channel. We have texel sheep for years .. and never came up ... That was big money for ram .. I only give € 500 for ram when used to breed pedigree texel sheep ... I think the 5 star rating system they have in place for when your buying ram is over rate .. I always buy what I see in front of me and not go by what star rate the ram is .. and you need to buy ram that suits the ewes that you have selected for good confirmation and size and good length sheep .

I have never heard of Texel throat but I did buy in one with lymph gland abscesses, involved the vet as I was thinking caseous lymphadenitis, he failed to thrive but a diagnosis was not reached, and thankfully we hadn’t introduced the disease. My dairy farmer who brings us his heifer calves for the summer has put up nets along the inside of his barn roof so that the starlings can’t roost. I agree they are a menace.

Texel throat is a problem, look where that rams two front legs are together and no width in his chest for lungs, it has become a problem with the way texels are bred across the water in pyramid game and changing a breed by some breeders try a new craze to make a big money killing.

Sorry about your texel ram , I had never heard of it either till 2 years ago when the same thing happened here with my best ram and he died two weeks later. I think it mostly affects texels because they have a short neck and I was advised to be extra careful and take longer when dosing texels to avoid any injury to their mouth. Maybe a plastic hawk like bird hung from the roof might help with the birds ? Love your videos and hope it dries up soon.

Just wondering... Would you be allowed to process a sheep like that that died from a known cause to make into a cooked dog food? Seems you could save the cost of the knackery and the price of some dog food.

For the birds, go there when it is almost completely dark amd make some noise. They will flight away but won’t come back that night. Repeat for few days and you shouldn’t have that problem anymore. What birds are they?

Tough going wrestling those rams, your father is a great man to work, try hanging up a few oul cd's, the flickering of them scares the birds a bit, God knows what the birds are carrying these days, with so many bords dying from bird flu and you are not suppose to go near them when they die. Chicken wire over all the openings otherwise, that's what I ended up doing. Sheep are well back too, it's bloody hard to make anything out of them no matter what way you do it. Be looking forward to seeing your lambs next year.

If you decide to get cats ask the local cat rescue if they have cats that can't be litterbox trained to rehome. They are typically free and the bonus is they are already spayed and neutered. I've always had neutered tomcats, and I free feed them cat kibble; they are just as eager to hunt as any cat. Don't think you have to starve them into hunting or that a female needs a litter of kittens to want to hunt.. Of course you have to consider the extra cost to feed, etc. you're likely better off putting up netting or chicken wire. Hope you show Sally's pups next video they must be growing like weeds! Has your Dad tried a cortisone shot for his shoulder? Sorry for the loss of your ram. I wonder why there's no ile de france rams in Ireland and the UK? So much better than Texels, but maybe their hooves can't handle the wet wether you get?
