Badami, Pattadakal, and Aihole are historic towns in Karnataka, India, known for their ancient rock-cut temples and unique contributions to Indian temple architecture. Together, they form a renowned tourist circuit that reflects the artistic, cultural, and architectural excellence of early Chalukyan rulers.
Badami
Badami is famous for its rock-cut cave temples and sandstone cliffs built during the 6th century. The temples here showcase Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist art and architecture. Badami has four major cave temples carved into cliffs, dating back to the 6th century. The caves are dedicated to Hindu deities like Shiva and Vishnu and contain intricate carvings and sculptures. Agasthya lake a serene water body beside which the temples are located, adding to the town's scenic beauty.
Pattadakal
The templese located in Pattadakal are from 7th and 8th century and it’s an exemplary blend of Dravidian (South Indian) and Nagara (North Indian) architectural styles, representing the Chalukyan experimentation in temple building
Aihole
Aihole is known for its over 125 temples and was the cradle of early Chalukyan architecture and is considered one of the earliest temple towns in India.
