I remember being about 10 years old ….about 1972, went to an air show with my dad and older brother, the Harrier did all its show pieces including a very low fly by then when the pilot had finished all its manoeuvres it faced the crowds hovering around 20 feet off the ground and took three bows in appreciation of the applause….👌🏻
@bridgerectifier7711
@bridgerectifier7711 3 жыл бұрын
It's that footage at the beginning were the Harrier crashed into the sea, was at Lowestoft air show (UK). The pilot tried to do the same thing, but messed up. He also broke his arm landing on the aircraft.

My late father helped develop the sea harrier radar and went on many sea trials with the Navy. He worked at Dunsfold (the same place topgear was filmed) I am and always will be incredibly proud of what he achieved. First off, it's always wonderful to see all manner of vehicles preserved for future generations to study, but the uniqueness of the 'Harrier JJ' will always bring gasps of astonishment. I sat in the pilot seat of a two-seater version, and that was an amazing experience in itself, but to fly an aircraft which can slow to a hover and have true VTOL capability must be such an incredible feeling for a pilot. Great filming on the video too, and good to see the appreciation for one of the most innovative inventions ever to come out of the UK. Best of luck to all involved in keeping the legacy of the Harrier JJ alive and well.

@sirsydneycamm1883
@sirsydneycamm1883 5 жыл бұрын
The UK authorities don't need to toss too much. Brit planes are appreciated so much, private individuals and crowd-funding keeps everything flyable flying. Not many places would entertain operating a nuclear bomber, the Vulcan, just for airshows. Have you seen the Shuttleworth collection and how often it flies more than all those at Duxford? The Harrier is grounded as a type not from lack of funds or type. The only plane needing a little boost from HM is the Lancaster in the BBMF. There are plenty of private Spitfires and Hurricanes and another Lancaster is being worked on up north for dreams of flight in a few, expensive years, all done without needing HM money.

tootyfruity70 i would say that the harrier kind of like the P-51 in that they are both great examples of anglo American pairing the mustang would not have been as great as it was if not for the British Merlin engines. Like wise the harrier was a great British planes and when the usmc put there list of upgrades and improvements on the plane they help assure that the aircraft would remain the Best VTOL aircraft for many years to come.

Totally Awesome! Cudos to everyone who pulled this together. I was a month away from graduating with my degree in aerospace engineering at Parks College when the very first AV8-B was flown by McDonnell Douglas in St Louis. I went over with a few classmates and watched the event. We got a tour of the flight line and met some of the team working in the fligh test group. 40 years later I have worked on and flown a lot of different civilian aircraft my dream has always been to fly one of these.

Really, I very much doubt he paid 3 million!? For a Harrier that was doomed to be scrapped or otherwise displayed in a museum? He might have spent 3 million overhauling it and setting up his operation. Hopefully he will recoup costs by taking it to air shows .. which seems to be the whole point! Big respect to him...

@@elmaxo9 Yes .. the F16 can reach supersonic speeds.. the Harrier can not. Interesting fact .. in aerial combat the UK Sea Harrier shot down ~30 supersonic Argentine (French built) Mirages and (US built) A4s for no losses. The old adage "it ain't what you got, it's how you use it" springs to mind.
