Full fender skirts would be a great look! You’d have the best of both worlds, easy access to remove the wheel and the lead sled vibe.

I enjoy your work. Watch you all the time. My opinion only, I think the top chop is too severe for me. Original body shoebox cars are probably rarer than a well done Lead Sled.

You fooled me with the top chop and done a great job on the roof and the rear bumper and I like the way you are doing the wheel wells, I have have built a half a dozen custom cars in the 1990s and most of them I chopped the top and I am currently building a new custom ride for my self keep up the good work it helps to inspire me to work on my project

Cutting those openings is fine if your making g it easier to change a tire but it totally changer the "tail dragger" or "sled" look your going for.i know you wanted the back lower and opening that up like you did does the opposite illusion wise.i think you REALLY need to make skirts now,use the piece you cut out for the bottom or cut another fender and do a radioused lip to give you a Lil more room and a great old skool look and helps with a rounded skirt which looks best on a tail dragger, all easy stuff for that look you want

I have to admit at first when you started the bumper modification I thought it would look horrible. I gotta stop judging so quickly because that rear bumper is awesome looking. Great job and even though I didn't comment on the rear bumper during the modification process I stand corrected in my thinking process. I guess your da man with da plan and it's shaping up to be a very cool ride. I like that you opened the rear wheel openings. It's a better look as well as making it more functional removing the tire.

Cutting the wheel well out is not sectioning the car...when you section the car you remove a piece from front to back maybe 2 - 3 inches...and it makes the body thinner....

To section it you would move the factory opening up 4 inches. Not cut a new opening. Edit. After reading this I didn't explain it correctly. Sectioning involves cutting the car into sections and removing a portion then welding it back together. Like he did on the roof.

WOW! This brings back along dorment memory! I did exactly the same treatment to a 1955 FORD tudor in 1969. Took 2days as I remember. No mig just oxy torch, helper ($1.00/hr.) to cool with a wet rag and a big heavy grinder. But the result was the same. Never did another one. Your rear bumper treatment is beautiful. Good job. But one suggestion, for a long experience, start working on a bench to delay the advent of "bodyman's knees" Good luck.

Not nitpicking here but, I agree with another commenter. In my days - 1950s, 1960s, what you are doing is "re radiusing" the wheel opening. "Sectioning " is cutting a slice out of the entire body side, from front to rear. It's doing to the lower body similar to "chopping " the top.

Hang on to the pieces of the wheel opening that you just removed. Some of the later "50's and 60's cars had wheel opening inserts similar to to these pieces which dressed up rear wheel openings like half-skirts. It may be easier to change the rear tires but you also compromise the lead-sled look, as well.
