The ending really gets me. Because not only did he free Rome from a tyrant, he saved a mother and her son from Commodus, and freed a father so he could make the long journey home back to his wife and children. Both things he was unable to do, but did for others.

Just to be clear, this was historical fiction; in reality Commodus, while undoubtedly a megalomaniac, was very popular with the members of the army and the citizens of Rome, who were living in an era of wealth and peace. And while he did engage in absurdly risk-free "combat" in the arena, he actually died in his bath. When an ancient Roman WWE wrestler choked him out* till he was dead. * Yes, that is true!

So she got together with the other people on the list one of them being his personal trainer and they threw a banquet for him and gave him poisonous mushrooms. Unfortunately he vomited them and went to take a bath, as that was a common Roman cure-all for most everything. The conspirators were now scared that he hadn't had the mushrooms in him long enough to kill him so his trainer went to the bath and strangled him.

You lot need to back up to the 50's and 60's for Truly Epic Films : "Quo Vadis", "The Robe", 'Demetrius and the Gladiators", "The Egyptian", "The Ten Commandments", "Ben-Hur", "Spartacus", "Cleopatra" and 'The Fall of the Roman Empire" on which "Gladiator" was Based! .... Don't get me wrong I Love 'Gladiator' but give these a shot, Massive Real Sets, Tens of Thousands of Real Extras and All-Star Casts!

This is not just a man's man movie. Us women love it too. In fact it's one of my all time favorite movies. The acting, the soundtrack, the cinematography. It's just perfection. Even tho I've seen this hundreds of times over the years that ending with that music always makes me cry.. This soundtrack and The Last of the Mohicans are two of my all time favorites. This movie won 5 Oscars in 2001 including Best Picture and Best Actor for Russell Crowe and it is honestly it is my second favorite movie from 2000 after American Psycho. Not only the incredible acting from Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix but the directing by Ridley Scott and music by Hans Zimmer are also incredible!!

Clicked to watch immediately - love this movie! As a woman, I really appreciate how Lucilla is written/depicted. As an only child who is closer to my dad than my mom and grew up as a tomboy (varsity soccer/basketball, climbed trees...etc.), it hit me when Emperor Marcus Aurelius tells her "If only you had been born a man, what a Caesar you would have made." I liked that you guys also recognized her tricky position, having to juggle her loyalty to her father, love for her son, feelings/guilt towards Maximus, and managing/fending off her gross younger brother (Lucilla and Commodus were real people btw - full blood siblings... 😬 though his behavior towards her in this film is fictional). About Lucilla and Maximus, it seems to me they "dated" or something like it when they were younger, but being a princess, she probably had to end it or chose to end it to marry her late husband (again, a real person who was a co-ruler to her father... an arranged marriage, of course) - maybe there were unresolved feelings about how her and Maximus ended things. It was so interesting to see your reactions and hear your perspectives to this movie as men/fathers/sons. 👏

For me this is the movie that showed me just how insanely talented Joaquin Phoenix is. He was so convincing in this movie as an unstable and unhinged Commodus. The original story was written by Alexandre Dumas and it’s another tale of betrayal, and the book is even referenced in the Shawshank Redemption. I always look forward to your reactions!

The opening battle scene was filmed in in the UK I believe. The forest was actually burned down Ridley Scott Got Permission From The Royal Forestry Commission To Burn A Forest To The Ground because it was scheduled for deforestation. Those woods were also used in allot of other movies - Children of Men, Harry Potter, War Horse and Avengers: Age of Ultron all filmed there.

If you like the feel and look of this movie, I highly recommend watching The Last Of The Mohicans from 1992. Music, cinematography, and acting all top tier. Stars Daniel Day Lewis, Madeleine Stowe, Jodhi May, and Wes Studi and many other amazing actors. So good!

This movie is a masterpiece. The last time I saw it was incredible : I had the opportunity to see it projected in a concert hall. The entire soundtrack was played live by an orchestra, the whole 2hrs. Now, the ending always makes me cry. But hearing ''Now we are free'' live, with an incredible soloist was truely something else. When the movie ended, the crowd let it all out. I've never seen such a long standing ovation at the end of a performance. We just couldn't stop clapping. I'll never forget that night !

I lose it and cry every time when she says at the end the words...."Your Home". It hits me hard! I can't help but think of my late wife and with my passing, will have the chance to "Go Home" to her. She was the first girl/woman I ever dated, kissed, made love to, and married for 30 years. She passed in 2009 from pancreatic Cancer. I've been "not yetting" for a while now and at 69, maybe a few more years.

I was 13 when this movie came out and I went to the theater with my two best friends. We loved it. In fact we three went to see Hans Zimmer live here in Lisbon in May and we cried listening to Lisa Gerrard singing the epic soundtrack of Gladiator while they were showing some images on the big screen, of the scene when Maximus is dying and seeing his wife and son. 🥺❤

The kid who plays Maximus son, did a movie called Life is Beautiful, an Italian movie about WWII. If you never watched that one, I recommend it a lot. It is beautiful and one of the most heartbreaking movies I ever watched. It is truly, an amazing one. The movie was nominated for a few Oscars and won some like Best Foreign Film and best actor.

For a movie that is so well written and so well acted and so well performed it always amazes me that the script had not been finished by the time they started shooting. Some of the lines were provided by the actors themselves. Like Russel Crow came up with "Strength and honor." When he was a boy, Crow attended a school that had a Latin phrase that translated to "wisdom and honor" or something similar to that, so he pitched "strength and honor" to the director, and they went with it.

I'll never forget my odd experience watching this movie in the theater. The woman sitting next to me fell asleep a quarter into the movie - heavy breathing to lite snores. She woke up in the middle of the movie and fell back to sleep. Woke up during the final battle and started crying when the movie ended. I don't know.

I was one of the Barbarians extras in the first battle of the movie .. ☘️ I was a student in the local University.. Was filmed in Bourne Woods .. The forest was to be cut but the local council allowed it to be burned … Some of my friends got an extra 2 weeks work as they had to learn to march .. was an amazing experience 😀

Richard Harris was incredible playing Marcus Aurelius, a wise, humble, compassionate, kind, selfless, and moral ruler. The reason he chose Maximus to be the protector of Rome, and not Commodus, was because he is similar to him and not corrupted by politics.

I appreciate how the writers demonstrated Maximus' tactical prowess and bravery instead of just telling us about it. During one of the first scenes he overrides an order to move back their artillery because the danger to their cavalry is "acceptable." This might make the viewer think he is a callous commander who uses his men as pawns. The movie flips this on it's head immediately when Maximus goes to lead the cavalry charge himself. He wouldn't order his men to take a risk he wouldn't take himself.

My folks looked at me like I was crazy because I used to silence the room when the trailer for the Gladiator played on the tele. Even at 15 I knew Russell Crowe was The man. This was the first DVD I owned (I bought 3: Gladiator, Patriot, & Coyote Ugly...YUP). I'm envious that in this era, Diamond D gets to experience this perfect film for the first time. What a treat.

Russell Crowe hated the whole "My name is Maximus..." speech even though it's a defining speech from the movie. But it was a William Nicholson concept that was added after filming had begun to make it all about him "going home" and not just about him getting revenge. It made the film equally as popular with a female audience as with a male one. And on the theme of "going home", if you want something really different but genuinely brilliant, try Local Hero by Bill Forsyth.

One of my favorite movies! 2 best scenes: 1. Commodus confesses his feelings to his father. Joaquin’s performance in that scene broke my heart. 2. The final fight. Maximus, fading in and out of consciousness, opening that can of whup-ass on Commodus and winning. A great depiction of grit and determination in the face of certain death. And I love the music as well, esp. at the end. Lisa Gerard’s voice is otherworldly.

When we bought our first DVD player we got to choose 2 free dvd's with it - we chose Blazing Saddles and Gladiator. That was about 30 years ago and the movie STILL makes me cry at the end. You can say what you like about Russel Crowe but his acting in this move was nothing short of outstanding. He made you believe in the Spaniard. He was a warrior who only wanted to go home to his wife and child - he was offered the ultimate in power but didn't want it because he knew himself and knew what he truly wanted in life and it wasn't Rome.

It has to be a part of every Patriots emotional lexicon and now it's a part of yours!👏😁👍 One of things I love most abut this film is that Derek Jacobi (Senator Gracchus) is in this, dancing the dance one must do with Emperors😆 The greatest theatrical TV show ever made about the Roman Empire was called 'I, Claudius' and Derek Jacobi played Emperor Claudius, the focus of the show and his journey navigating the perils of royal Rome til he finds one day he himself is Emperor. I grew up with a mother who was REALLY into Egyptian History and archaeology so my love for the Past and History was something I had at a VERY young age. At the time you wouldn't find most kids watching that kind of show but I LOVED it. I still do. I watch it every couple years as I own my own copy. Pretty amazing what can be done in 13 episodes! If you've never seen it, do yourself a personal and watch it sometime. The theater they give you is AMAZING, by classically trained stage performers like Patrick Stewart, Derek Jacobi, Brian Blessed and John Hurt...all young men at the time as it was made in 1976. The only thing I've ever seen even TRY to come close (it's a different era in Time however) was Anthony Hopkins' King Lear (2018). Though King Lear be a true cinematic set of performances by Masters of the Craft, it is given to the audience as more of a theatrical piece and true to the dialogue which tends to lose a great deal of interested viewers. Shakespeare isn't for everyone😆 Was a great watch, super fun!! Thx for sharing fellers!🤠

This is an example of a perfect film. If you watch the opening shot carefully you see Maximus woefully gaze upon the battlefield, look away then have his gaze averted by a robin, a small and simple beauty of nature distracts his gaze, then he's immediately drawn back to the reality of the battlefield. A simple shot but one that explains so much about his character without even a a word of dialogue. He's a simple man who has strong morals and values the simple things in life. While he's a great general of the roman armies and well respected leader he loves the simple beauties of life.

Gladiator is brilliant. And each time we watch it hits different on many different perspectives. Hans Zimmer composed one of the most perfect scores of all time. Is by far my favorite of his (and I loooove The Lion King and Interstellar). Ridley Scott was blessed when he got this movie. Russell, Djimon and Joaquim just showed how exceptional actors they are. The 'not yet' part still gets me emotional. 🥲 Beautiful, just beautiful! 👏👏👏👏👏💞

It was supposed to be Oliver Reed burying the little statuettes in the blood there at the end, Juba having died previously. But when Reed suddenly died leaving a fourth of the filming yet to be completed, they had to scramble to work things out. CGI and edited out footage already shot helped but they kept Juba "alive" for the ending. Good thing they did as Juba will be in the sequel being filmed.

I don't know if you guys knew or talked about this, but there is a Gladiator sequel coming late next year. Connie, Djimon, and Derek Jacobi (senator ally) all reprise their roles; Paul Mescal is going to play an adult version of Lucius, and Denzel Washington and Pedro Pascal are joining the cast. And of course, Ridley is returning to direct.

Always fun to watch Derek Jacobi in anything; from the 1976 mini series I, Claudius to this. As a veteran of the Royal National Theatre his every performance is Master Class; speaking of which, do you guys remember him in Doctor Who? And as an older fan, even if Badd Medicine doesn't react to it, you might watch the 1964 movie: The Fall of the Roman Empire, which also dealt with the death of Emperor Commodus(Christopher Plummer), with Alec Guiness as Marcus Arielius. And speaking which, do you remember when Hannibal Lector quoted Marcus Arielius in Silence of The Lambs? 😎👍

Little fun fact: the actor who played Maximus son is actually Italian, he acted in "La vita è bella" (Life is beautiful) a movie by Roberto Benigni about the holocaust which I highly recommend

Having seen this at the cinema when it came out & buying into the whole video 'special' box set with production notes & all that jazz. Honestly this film was MASSIVE that year and the production was another level. There really is very little CG in it, most of (even the colluseum stuff) was models and real sets merged in camera. No CG extras. A lot of the crowds in that audience are actually painted Q-tips. Yes, really. It never ceases to amaze me that they started shooting without a full script and then had to re-write whatever they DID have when Oliver Reed DIED in the middle of production. It's such an amazing, PERFECT seeming film. You'd think it had always been planned to work out as this polished epic but no. A lot of people worked really hard to make what could have been a car crash into THIS!! Literally awesome.

One of my favorite scenes in this movie is the first battle for a couple of reasons. One, I love world history and this movie delivered on catapults, ballistas, and the sheer force of the Roman military. Plus the fact that Commodus, Marcus Aurelius, and Lucilla are real historical figures, even if their story was tweaked for the film. Secondly, the battle is practical with the fire destroying the forest. Ridley Scott found out a patch of land was scheduled for deforestation in Surrey, so he offered to assist lol. This has been one of my favorite movies since I first watched it in theaters when I was 12 years old! Great reaction gentleman!

What's even crazier about this masterpiece of a movie, is that time constraints forced Ridley and Russell to commit to the project without a finished script. Ridley wrote it as he filmed it and a lot of this dialog is improvised as well as manifested. Completed this film in about four to six months.
