The underwater boat trick where they hold the boat upside down to breath as they walk along the ocean floor is actually possible. But the boat needs to be heavy enough that it doesn’t float to the surface.

See, this is why I love Norrington. He's expected to be the stereotypical "evil British officer" that happens in almost every period film that has anything to do with Britain, but he's actually a decent guy. He genuinely cared about Elizabeth as a person, and not as a prize. So, as long as she's happy and taken care of, he knows when he's beaten.

Norrington’s comment at the end was insinuating two things. -He knows that Will made the sword and did it well. With great care and devotion. -Just like how much care and devotion he put into the sword he wants Will to put it “every aspect of his life.” Meaning his relationship with Elizabeth. In other words.. “Please take care of her and cherish her.”

He is reasonable, loyal, level-headed, smart, and even empathetic. He has ambition but isn't prideful or vain. He has integrity and cannot be bribed with money or power. If I remember correctly walking the boat underwater didn't work. Not because it wouldn't create an air pocket, but because 2 people aren't strong enough to hold the boat down.
@Hapsard
@Hapsard 2 жыл бұрын
Umm ... Didn't see the myth busters episode that covered this, but while the actual shots in the movie may not have been accurate, this would totally work, the same way diving bells (barrels) have worked since 300 BC. Neutral buoyancy (no floating or sinking) happens when the weight of the water displaced equals the weight of the boat and it's contents. Since only part of the boat floating is under water, if you flipped the boat over and only let in a bit less than that amount of air, the boat would be gently sinking and you would actually have to hold it up slightly while keeping your head in the air pocket ... also getting where you need to go before the CO2 levels got too high.
@Hapsard
@Hapsard 2 жыл бұрын
@O. B. I repeat ... boyancy happens when the wieght of the boat/bucket and its contents eqauls the weight of the water displaced. if the weight of the water is less than the weight of the boat/bucket and its contents, it sinks ... to make the upside down boat sink you just reduce the amount of air trapped ... but there can still be trapped air. The amount shown in the movie? ... no way to know without knowing all kinds of variables, but I suspect it is too much. That said it does work ... they have been doing this for litereally thousands of years.
@Hapsard
@Hapsard 2 жыл бұрын
@O. B. Yup, I have no doubt that it would take a load of 2000 lbs to sink that boat. Sounds completely reasonable. And if that boat was half full of water it would take less to sink it. The question is, how full of water does it have to be to sink? ... and the answer is not entirely full, because the boat and it's contents weigh something. You turn the boat upside down, and there is that much air (the amount that was empty before it sank of its own accord) that can still be in it and still have it sink. If you have a balsa wood boat the boat material itself has negative buoyancy, and there will never be a chance of an air space. If you have an oak boat there will be more air. As much as in the movie? Probably not, but from what I can see in the clip there that seems to be what they are testing.

It was pretty uncommon back then to have the romantic rival to be a decent person, too. The movie defied every expectation I had, and while getting older can be a bummer I'm happy I got to see so many classics in theaters (LotR trilogy, Pirates, The Incredibles, The Dark Knight, etc.). Was a great time for film, where they'd found that sweet spot between practical effects and CG while also really focusing on telling a great story. Hoping we get another film renaissance soon.

@@kenjutsukata1o1 US movie industry is a decaying dying beast, infested with idelogues, whose first second and third priority are to push their political message. Things like compelling story or characters are complete afterthought, if any of them are competent enough to write them at all. Hoping for renaissance soon, is like hoping for family cat that's dead and buried to come back to life. In time, new competitors will spring up, since there is a huge market not serviced and thus huge piles of money left on the table, but it will take time for those to grow good enough. It would take way more drastic measures, than what holywoke is willing to or capable of taking, to save this monstrosity. [Edited] I think they redesigned a couple aspects of the town on the ride, but for decades, there was the town takeover scene with the pirates chasing women through the streets and houses (with one pirate Running from a desperate woman in a humorous twist); the drunken guy in the pig sty; and the ships firing at each other. This being KZbin, you can actually search for the Pirates of the Caribbean Ride and there's possibly a video showing the ride Before the changes. You can compare it to those filmed Afterwards. No one ever seems to mention this: At the same time POTC: COTBP came out, Disney released another movie based on one of it's beloved attractions -- The Haunted Mansion. With none other than Eddie Murphy, if I recall correctly. Admittedly, I don't remember anything about The Haunted Mansion, except people saying it was meh, even With Murphy's star power. Apparently, no one else does either because it wasn't really successful at all. It was a surprise bomb with POTC becoming a surprise hit. 16:53 In the Golden Age of Piracy, the pirates were often famous and written about as if they were rock stars (part of the reason JD based his look on several mannerisms on Keith Richard), so they had "fans." And there was a lot written about the Brethren of Pirates and what the pirate code was. Not everyone knew it, ofc, but for those who were fascinated and read about them--as Elizabeth obviously has--the knowledge could prove invaluable. 33:36 Gibbs told them to use case shot and langrage. Case shot is clusters or cans of small iron or lead balls (also known as grapeshot or canister shot). Langrage refers to scraps of metal used to fire at an enemy in naval warfare. There were several more kinds of things than cannon balls that could be fired from the guns, and pirates in particular employed several different types of shot shince what they generally wanted to do was disable a ship so it could not run away. Chain shot was often used in order to disable masts, and grapeshot/case shot was particularly useful in filling a sail full of holes so it was no longer effective. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cannon_projectiles

20:21 The underwater upside-down boat thing works on the condition that there is a weight attached to the top of the hull. It wouldn't work like in the movie. The boat with the air would float on the water due to buoyancy. If the air under the water somehow got to it, the boat would rise with them. So in order for it to stay that way, the downforce must be greater than the lift due to the weight.

One really cool think to note is that everyone assumes that Jack tripped and fell off at the end because he was a fool or not knowing where he was, but if you listen at the beginning, they were talking about the rocks down there and how it's nearly impossible to survive that fall. He sees that when Elizabeth faints and just falls, she finds the sweet spot and survives, so he knows that if he jumps or tries for somewhere, he's bound to get hurt, so he ends up purposely tripping and falling so as to mimic her fall and "land" the fall safely into the water. Just like in many time throughout the movie, and indeed even the series, so many people write Jack off as a fool or drunk, when he is actually one step ahead most of the time.

I love how the only one in this film that actually follows the “stereotypical PG” rules of piracy is Barbossa ( “pirate” accent, captain of a cursed ship, the only main character obsessed with gold, even saying “argh” at certain points) and yet he’s easily the most ruthless part of the movie, delivering two straight-up _murder_ blows without the camera cutting away (it helped that they were undead, but still).

Geoffrey Rush approached these movies with the attitude of "if it's a pirate they want, it's a pirate they'll get," and it worked spectacularly. He was having a whale of a time the whole way through.

These are BRILLIANT movies. The first one especially is just perfect. I really enjoyed 2 and 3. It was just that trilogy for a while, I've only seen 4 one time and haven't yet watched five but even at their worst they're very fun! Johnny Depp is ridiculously brilliant as Jack.

I like the 5th, they close some plot lines left open after the third, the fourth is not worth my attention, besides Penelope Cruz, she's great as usual, Johnny Depp and her have amazing chemistry, but I really enjoyed the 5th, it's worth a watch, I don't understand why it gets so much hate, every actor did an amazing job, I love coming full circle for Elizabeth and Will, it just makes sense to me

This movie had 2 premiers. One in London and one at Disneyland. The director describes very different audiences. When the prisoners were trying to lure the dog with the key, it was any other moment. But at Disneyland people lost their minds. On opening weekend, you could tell who knew the ride and who didn’t by their reaction to that moment.

That part with Will imitating Jack was Orlando's genuine impression of Jack in the moment, so it was sort of unscripted. There are a few moments like that in the series. I shall point them out 😁

15:34 Fun fact: the Russian translation had the pirate say "took you long enough!" instead, which I wish the original said as well. 22:25 This wooden part of the ship is called a boom, for the sound it makes when it connects with your head. Just kidding. But it's a good way to remember its name. In the same vein, this sail is called a spanker. Also, something that pisses me off about the otherwise impeccable script is - why do the pirates freak out at the idea of the medallion dropping in the ocean? They can walk there and pick it up!

I had fully intended on sleeping through this movie. I was at an overnight triple showing and had to work early the next morning. I watched the first 2 films (Finding Nemo & Freaky Friday) and figured there was no way a movie based on a Disney ride was going to be any good so planned to catch some zzz's in my seat before work. But then Jack Sparrow was standing so proudly on his mast in this epic shot that panned out to show it was sinking into the bay as he docked and I realized that no, this movie was not going to suck and that I wouldn't be getting any sleep before my shift. That was a difficult day at work, but it was totally worth it.

I liked how will really has disdain for pirates in the beginning and doesn’t want to accept that his dad was a pirate even when Jack tells him that bootstrap was a good man. And the call back of that at the end when will saves Jack because even though he’s a pirate, he’s a good man.

Jack Sparrow was loosely based on the historical pirate Calico Jack but I believe for mannerisms Depp took a lot of inspiration from Keith Richards. This was a fun movie, and far better than it had any right to be. Just the blacksmith fight was more than I expected when I first saw it. A true pirate high adventure up there with Sea Hawk and Captain Blood.

There's a reason for the "worst pirate" sentence. Johnny became a pirate because he freed a whole lot of slaves, witch wasn't standard even for pirates at that time. Wasn't because he robbed ships, took hostages or anything. It was just because he was a good person. He even says something like "people aren't cargo, mate".

You asked about the "Pirates of the Caribbean" ride and if it ties into the movie - it ties in in a number of ways. Near the beginning when the pirates are in jail trying to get the dog with the key to come -- that is from the ride. Also the scene where they first get to Tortuga, with the brothel and the drunks.

In the Disney ride is the prisoners trying to get the keys from the dog, the drunk sleeping with the pigs, the general mood of Tortuga, the treasure cave, the pirate marooned on an island, the monkey... the ride is generally a mood and world builder, so the writers just put a story into the world of the ride. Since the success of the films, the characters of the films, are now in the ride.

This is my favorite movie in the franchise. It exactly replicates the original Disney ride: The pirate attack on the town, the prisoners in the jail whistling for the dog with the key, the lady being thrown into the air from the hold, the skeletal pirates and the dock life in Barbados. After this movie came out they added Johny Depp into several of the scenes on the ride which I didn’t feel was necessary - but having been on the ride more than once - watching this film for the first time was a joy.

Yes, there are important post-credit scenes in every Pirates movie. Fun fact: Johnny Depp really is responsible for molding Capt. Jack into that character. He based a lot of the quirkiness on Keith Richards (including the eyeliner); and the Disney execs totally didn’t get it. When they viewed the initial rushes they thought Capt. Jack was too gay and wanted him changed. Depp refused and said he wouldn’t play it any other way. And the rest is history.... Depp has appeared at children’s hospitals dressed as Capt. Jack, and there’s a video of a time he became part of the actual ride, and froze like a mannequin until people taking the ride came through. You can find these appearances on KZbin.
