Baden-Baden is known as Germany's Russian city. From as far back as Czarist times, the spa has been popular with Russian tourists. Even writers such as Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, and Turgenev once visited the spa town in the Black Forrest. But tourists have stayed away since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. But what has changed due to the war? How are Russian and Ukrainian residents dealing with the current situation? DW reporter Lukas Stege was on location and has built up a picture.

@NTERDK
@NTERDK 2 жыл бұрын
True... but it is no law for "solidarity", and it would be best if none of the RU or UA talks bad about each other etc. even though there is no law against not... I don't think Germans think its nice if they see Russians and Ukrainians arguing in the streets (no violence etc., but still not nice), so they can still be lawful but irritating - maybe they meant something like that?

This was a very professional presentation. I have visited Baden-Baden and was impressed and it is easy to be attractive to people. It is good to see real people (not politicians) trying to help each other in these difficult times. I know both Russians and Ukrainians and all are hurting right now. I hope this all ends soon.

I'm naturally struck by how much money there is in Baden-Baden. Yes, it's been a resort for a long time, but you know how it is. I'm sure we have Ukrainian refugees in the Ruhrgebiet, but it's just not as photogenic as Schwarzwald. DW Travel is not much seen in Dortmund. People who have lived there for decades take refuge from their own neighborhoods, but there is no help coming for them. No, I do not hear much Russian spoken on the street in my city these days, but there were times, oh, five years ago, when I did.

This area (or the region it's in the rhine valley) was a spearhead of the Germanys industrial revolution back in the 19th century. The fact there is a alot of money there shouldn't be that surprising. There was always immense agricultural and formerly mineral wealth (iron mines) in this region even back in before the days of the industrial revolution.

‘This Will Tear the EU Apart’: German Energy CEO Speaks Out Against Russian Gas Ban "It's not just that this step would hit Germany hard, it would pose a huge problem for Europe," the CEO of EON, Leonhard Birnbaum, told the Handelsblatt business newspaper. @@hello.itsme.5635 I don't see how that's a good thing. The russians should be allowed to celebrate their heritage freely in any democratic country, just like everyone else. Meanwhile, in the UK I'm sick and tired of seeing more Ukrainian flags than british or even english flags (I live in England). And there's no Ukrainians there, they just raise the Ukrainian flags in churches and stuff, absolutely brainwashed. So is it OK to raise a certain flag out of shear indoctrination and not out of pure heritage?

Germany has a great experience in eradicating chauvinistic imperialism in their own society. It’s a great opportunity to apply this experience in re-educating their russian residents so they become decent people. Too bad your journalist didn’t bring up the scandal at the Rizzi, a Baden-Baden restaurant where the Russian clientele successfully pressured the management to fire a Ukrainian employee for his antiwar stance on social media. I see a few comments where this clip made them wish to visit Baden Baden. As for myself, I’d rather visit Bucha and Mariupol once Russia is defeated. Like Baden Baden, these places in Ukraine also experienced the impact of the German Russian business collaboration. Perhaps Rene can some day share his knowledge on how to go from broke to prosperous using Russian money. Reparations are coming.

Completely agree with you and support your position. I was also disappointed that the journalist didn't bring up the incident at the Rizzi. I was shocked and saddened when I read that a Ukrainian man was fired for making antiwar posts on social media. There is no reason to fire someone who is exposing the truth about this terrible war. I can only hope that it was a unique and rare incident.

Beautiful city. It's nice to see if there are places that can stay apolitical and have both Ukrainians and Russians. As a Belorussian American, I can tell that this conflict can be very explosive, even within the same families. But it looks like in the Russian community it became a general convention just not to speak about it, because you know it may explode if there are opposite views.
