Great song from a band that started off as Beatles protegees and became one of the saddest stories in rock & roll, thanks to the greed and ruthlessness of the music biz. To a certain generation of musicians and music fans, just mentioning Badfinger's name immediately brings on sombre feelings because of what happened to them.

This power pop mainstay was written by Badfinger lead singer Pete Ham. It's a simple lyric about a guy affirming his commitment to some lucky girl, but musically it the spot with retro '60s sounds polished with a modern sheen. The title kicks off the song and leads into every verse, which never lets up. The chorus goes in a different direction, providing a nice change of pace for the listener as Ham sings the empowering lines: Knock down the old brick wall And be a part of it all This song has a discernible Beatles vibe, but executives at Apple Records weren't enamored with it and didn't want to release it as a single. The group had to fight for it and won the battle; it was issued as the lead single of their album No Dice. It ended up being the only single from the album, but one of the album cuts, "Without You," became a huge hit when Harry Nilsson covered it. Badfinger followed this up with two hits from their next album: "Day After Day" and "Baby Blue." They were red hot, but this wasn't reflected in their bank accounts. Apple Records was imploding around this time and never paid Badfinger their due. When they jumped to Warner Bros. in 1974, it got even worse - Warners withheld payments and put the band on hold when it appeared Badfinger's business manager had taken funds from an escrow account. The band was broke and broken by 1975, and Pete Ham killed himself in desperation. Another band member, Tom Evans, took his own life in 1983. (Songfacts.com)

Junior High for me, class of '77. Baby Blue was playing on the stereo at the house of my first boy/girl party in the 7th grade. Remember those long, wooden cabinet stereos that were about 6 foot long? Yeah, we had one too. Anyway, Baby Blue has always been one of my top 10 favorite songs of all time, probably because of that memory of that party and the feeling of youth and innocence.

Knock down the old grey wall refers to the disused cow shed the band rehearsed in at a farm in the Swansea valley in South Wales. You can see it in the promotional film they made for this single. This group was called The Iveys when they were signed by Apple in 1968. Paul McCartney came in to a Beatles session early on July 24th, 1969 and made a full demo version of his new song ("Come And Get It") in less than an hour before the rest of the band showed up. He played piano and sang the lead vocal in the first take, added a second vocal part and played maracas in the first overdub, then added the drums and finally added the bass. He gave The Iveys the demo - and told them to practice it as close to the demo as they could. Paul produced the song and scheduled a recording session for them on August 2nd, 1969. He auditioned each of the four Iveys to see which one should sing the lead. McCartney eventually picked Tom Evans to sing the lead vocal. Paul told the group that if they played the song as he gave it to them... he guaranteed it would be their first hit record. The single was released in December of 1969 in the UK and went to #4, released in January of 1970 in the US and went to #7. The song also was #1 in New Zealand, #4 in Canada and #5 in Ireland. The release of this single was the first time the band was called Badfinger. McCartney put this new group on the map with a song he wrote and produced for them.
