I blame the management, who like other bands, were screwed over because of crooked contracts.

I wish the sound quality on Joe’s connection was better for this interview.

Molland is the sole survivor from Badfinger. I’m glad to see that he’s still playing shows and that he’s finally getting paid Royalties. He and the families of the other members finally are getting paid. They were all ripped off so badly years ago. So Hamm ended up committing suicide because he was broke and couldn’t support his family. Their manager stole all their money. And they had 4 million selling singles. RIP Pete, Mike and Tom

Well not quite. Ron Griffiths was an original member before Joey joined and Ron is the guy who played on 'Come and get it', Joey wasn't on that single or the first Badfinger album 'Magic Christian Music'. Joey replaced Ron. 'No Dice' was the first album Joey appeared on.

And on this you very KZbin channel you can see another video that talks about how Joey Molland called promoters at different venues telling them that Tom Evans touring band was not the real Badfinger and he shouldn’t hire them. So Tom had to cancel his tour. Not the only source outside of Wikipedia you will find this information. Maybe Joey can address how he was the late addition to the band which contributed nothing to any of the hits and now he wants interfere with Tom Evans actually being able to go out and perform songs he had written.

@@Kim-iv4ty What you say is true. But you neglected to mention that Ron was "bought out" when Tommy kicked him out of the band due to Ron being married and a father. Ron was paid. So, kinda like when you sell your small business to a new owner, you don't get to share the profits any more.

@@robryf9325 I've heard this story, and I read Dan's book, and I've always wondered how Joey had so much power that one phone call from Molland could undo bookings. So, the local club has a deal with Tommy's band to come play for a fee. Then, the all powerful Joey calls up the club and says, "That's not Badfinger." and BLAM! Tommy and Donnie and Mike are immediately sawed off at the knees, no questions asked? Somehow that seems unlikely to me. I have no idea - it COULD be true for all I now, but it sure doesn't seem likely to me.

Polley, not Molland, drove Pete and Tommy to suicide. Pete was too trusting.

Fantastic band! Very talented group! I think the mismanagement of the band interests by crooked people was the contributing factor.

It's so cruel to blame a person for something like this. Thank you for setting the record straight and allowing Joey to say his side.

Thanks for this one, John. I bought Badfinger's album "Straight Up" as a Christmas gift to myself in December 1971. Always thought that Pete Ham and Joey Molland were visual dead ringers for Lennon & McCartney back then. The 19-song CD "The Very Best of Badfinger" (2000 release) is some of my favorite shaving music.

Interesting that you mentioned the comparison of Pete Ham and Joey Molland of Badginger to John Lennon and Paul McCartney of the Beatles. Their songs 'Come and Get It' was written and produced by Paul McCartney, and 'Day After Day' was produced by George Harrison. Also, Badginger was the first group signed by the Beatles' Apple label in 1968(?).

Of course I'm aware of the Badfinger and The Beatles connections and comparisons...but I've never personally noticed the physical simularities between Joey Molland and Paul McCartney and Pete Ham and John Lennon before now.... I can sort of see it a little now though. Cheers!

@@robertpercival5688Well, facts are that most songs were written by either Joey or Pete. Tom was a great vocalist and writer (equal to Joey), but quantity-wise, Joey and Pete contributed the most.

Great interview. Badfinger recorded "Shine on" written by Pete in 73"? Joey mollands "Shine" on one of his recent albums has one heck of a Badfinger-esq tone, its a great song!.

Since "Ass" and "Badfinger" were out by around the same time (late '73-early '74) both albums were DEFINITELY made between '72 and '73.

Almost as sad as the suicides is Joey Molland being blamed for the suicide. Joey has enough to deal with concerning the loss of his band mates.

Stan Polley was part of the equation that led to the down fall of Badfinger. The other part was another entertainment manager John Cass who tried to sue Tommy for 5 million dollars in the first part of 1981 just months before his death. This had Tom legally tied up with no way out. Cass was bad if not worse than Stan Polley. Cass was the last straw that put Badfinger in the final resting place. The argument with Joey was minor to the way John Cass handled Badfinger in the very early 1980’s.
