Born and raised in Hawaii. Can confirm that a lot of native Hawaiians or Kanaka Maoli do not like tourists. I think there’s a misconception though that if you’re “haole” or white skinned then we don’t like you. Which isn’t true for the majority of Natives. I can’t speak for all Kanaka Maoli, but you won’t be liked if you have “haole” mentality or a sense of entitlement. Which I think, goes for any tourist destination.

I agree. Hawaii’s political history… The Hawaiian islands were stolen by the USA & its White leaders. Hawaiians’ rights were strategically dismantled by the Whites’ new laws (i.e. the Hawaiian language was prohibited to be spoken, even in the household), and Hawaiian land ownership was denied or made extremely difficult, to the advantage of the Whites. The term “haole” means “no breath” - the description by the Hawaiians when they first saw the pale Whites, no color. Their first impression, makes sense. It became a derogatory term when the Whites did what they did. Otherwise, local haoles & tourist haoles are treated kindly & respectfully, because they do the same for the people, lands, & culture of Hawaii. Shaka, haoles, enjoy life! 🤙🏼🤙🏽
