Badger Car Ferry crossing Lake Michigan.

The Badger came into Bay Shipbuilding in Sturgeon Bay on Nov 4 2021 for inspection and repairs. Work has been completed and she is on her way back home to Ludington Michigan with the help of two of Sarter Tugs. It is more economical to tow her than to fire up the boilers for a short trip.

Are her boilers fired during this tow? How are there electric lights on board?

Boilers were winterized at the end of the season last October. Not sure how there is power on board(battery?), but yes, there is.

Good question Eric. There can't be any steam power because everything is drained of water in the fall. Most likely a portable diesel generator is placed by lift gate and connected to a shore power cable or the shore power circuit. I would guess that there must be a shore power cable for lights and even run a welder so maintenance can be done during off season. Chances are there is a diesel generator in the engine room as a back up power supply.
