I was in aus last year and I was amazed at how expensive some things were. But then I ordered domino's and it was like 1/3 of the price in the UK. Petrol was also wayyyyy cheaper there. It's weird how much it varied from the UK

I’m from southern Ontario Canada and my dad would buy similar pies in the 70s. The company name from England was “smedleys”. It looked almost identical to this and I loved the mushy pastry top bit.

Quick tip. Before you cook it, take a knife and get the slab of dough off the filling. Sprinkle som salt in and stir the filling with a fork. (All the meat tends to be at one side of the dish.) Replace the dough, cut a cross in the middle of the top and then cook it. You'll get a tastier pie, because Fray Bentos doesn't use salt...

I'm not sure what bygone age you are referring to when you suggested that there was a significant quantity of meat that would benefit from agitating. They consist of 8% beef and 7% kidney and there's no shortage of salt in there.

I just checked with my wife who is from England and she said that they are the raves over there. She said that Steak and Kidney pie was her favorite when she was a kid. Seriously, I think she still is a kid :)

Great Pies I first tasted them in Scotland 50 odd years ago and I was wrapt when I discovered them in OZ many years later ,they went off the Market for a while as the Can maker in OZ closed down but Campbell's found another source and they are available from Coles for $8.10 and worth every cent.

Tin of pie/ emergency caravan pie we call these! Tasty as they are, lots are donated to UK Foodbanks because they'rel onglife and cheap. But they take a lot of cooking fuel and so many people are in food and fuel poverty so not always best items to donate.

I get these all the time when I visit my family in the UK from the States. I was lucky to bring 5 of these back home through Customs, usually they confiscate them :( But they sell it on Amazon :D

My wife makes what she calls Shepard's Pie. It's made with left overs and then you cover it with mashed potato's then cheese and man it's good. Ya need a little magnet attached to your can (tin) opener so as ya don't cut yourself tryin ta get the tin off the tin.

I love these pies and I don't know what country this video is from, but $6.99 for these sounds really expensive. The video says it was 6 years ago and these would have cost anywhere between £1 and £2 in the UK then. Nowadays and with stuff being generally more expensive, they cost around £3.25 in some supermarkets and that's considered expensive, but they are cheaper in other shops.

They are hotter than the sun when cooked. You must have an asbestos mouth because that still looks super hot. 😁 I have to let them cool down for at least 20 minutes before eating. The Balti / Curry ones are the best. They can be hard to find though.

I use to love these pies back in the 60's and then they stopped putting meat in them. I had one last night for the first tome in ten years and it again had very little meat in it. It tasted great but ran off the plate. Such a shame I would gladly pay more if there was more meat in it. IT is not meant to be a cheap meal but a great stand by.

If you can buy, in the UK, even cheap "own brand" supermarket pies with a shortcut pastry, why would you buy this rubbish?
