Worth the wait if only for the return of sweary John who has been a tad abstemious for a while. Might be worth adjusting the format to 2 shots to Alex to start , reducing by 1 if he wins a hole. Or, of course, playing proper handicap and scoring Stableford. JR has become a little too good to be bad. Still great fun though. Alex wins the Oscar for deadpan deflating comments. Love the red kite too.

I'm working on a solution, but Stableford is too involved to explain, and doesn't give the tension of matchplay, no one really wins or loses until you've finished, and I don't think casual watchers would really like it.

A suggestion about the handicap system... you could modify it slightly so that Alex only get's the shot taken away IF it was required to win the hole. So if Alex beats John by a shot anyway, it does not get taken away. Puts a little more pressure on John to perform ;)
