I remember seeing a video of Liefield coming up with and designing a new character from scratch, it was just 30 minutes of him going "Add another shoulder pad." and "Let's put some more spikes here." and the characters name was Overkill and his superpower was... um... guns I guess?

There are many many complex characters in Anime. Pilo had been both a protagonist and antagonist and his character development is looking promising. Pilo is a pile of rocks for the people. Pilo has a very complex backstory. Pilo is one of the strongest with the ultimate goal to take the Contest of Champions prize. What would he do with it if he won? Time will tell.

The "How did we get here" flashback... doesn't explain how they got there. How did Badrock track down Girth? How did he meet up with Gunner? Was she tracking down Girth on her own? Why? Did they exchange backstories when they met, or did Badrock already know her? What does "The Overlord" want with Badrock's dad? Why am I asking these questions? Why am I pretending to care?

A lot of Erik Larsen's Vicious Circle members are "here's the name, here's some powers I thought of while on the can, now watch Savage Dragon/Freak Force etc. beat on them", but even then, they're more generic when LIEFELD uses them. Liefeld's the kid who grabs action figures and thinks that just by his holding them, everything becomes a thousand times more EXTREME and AWESOME.

If nothing else, I hope we get to see Pilo (Pylo? Pile-o?), I don't know about crowd-favourite, but he's already mine. Also, presumably Linkara gets to pick the battle type at least once? Gotta figure out what he can challenge opponents to that gives him the edge. 'Cause I suspect that the jokes gonna be that the pile of rocks gives Linkara a surprising challenge on reviewing comics...

In one of their fan mail episodes they said they had created 31 different champions and there would be many that while described they would never actually compete with Linkara. So it's highly possible he won't fight any of them. Though I would be surprised if he didn't go up against the survivalist guy

I don't think Linkara will fight agianst Impira as he already has fought against her though I think we will see more of her as an ally. Destragalga will probily not be fought against due to how hard that would be create that sort of fight. Most likely he will suffer the worf effect. Bandit King is likely to fight Linkara and might even act as one of arc's main villains. Pilo is going fight Linkara due how mysterous they are.

The Doctor Insano: Linkara vs Neutro fight happened, so I wouldn't be so sure about the Destragalga fight not happening. Still, I hope it gets subverted somehow and it isn't just a kaiju vs giant robot fight.

Finally, I've been eagerly awaiting the continuation of the storyline and it absolutely did not disappoint. Also Pilo FTW!

Ya know, all these bad 90s comics actually gave me an idea for a video game. It's set in a superhero world with a history divided much like real life comics (Golden Age, Silver Age, Bronze Age, and Dark Age). It's set in the Dark Age of the world and you play as someone who starts out as a generic Liefeld character, but then got his memories restored by his old sidekick and he realized he was actually a Bronze Age Superhero who had his memory wiped. And after he sees what the world has become, he sets out to find other Bronze, Silver, and Gold Age heroes to help bring the world into a new age that's better than the current one. I don't know, I think it could be interesting.

Ah, I see we have another example of Huge Moon appearing in Liefeldian artwork (considering how I like to call the Moon from Majora's Mask by the moniker "Moon of Impending Doom", I'm going to dub this an example of "Liefeldian Moon of Impending Dumb" or just "Moon of Impending Dumb"). Isn't it ironic that Linkara's pet peeves of comic artists drawing the moon so huge has appeared in at least two comics (by my count, there may be more I don't know of) about or related to Youngblood.

Hmm you know Linkara's 'anger, anger, and anger' joke made me think of something, I'd like to see a good artist (or just a not terrible one) redo this book with good art and see if that makes it feel any better like the dialogue would probably still suck but I'm curious how having it be primed with a different mental set up would make the book feel.

You're right, it's not Liefeld's fault that this comic sucks. He just wasn't a good enough artist to save this comic from an abysmal script written by Liefeld (and Erik Larson).

I have also wondered about a few comics and how they would have been in the hands of different artists. It would be kind of neat to see some beloved issues redone by a different penciler and see how they would have framed everything.

The moon can look huge when the atmosphere provides a lensing affect. But the moon needs to be low to the horizon for that to happen.

Note it's not exactly a lensing affect it is just a psychological effect, hold a coin at arm's length next to the Moon near the horizon and then later when it is high in the sky and you find it takes up the same amount of your visual field. Apparently it's either because in the sky there is nothing around it but with the stuff on the horizon around it (and in front) you either: realize it is further away (and so calculate it is bigger) or because see a bunch of small stuff around it and it looks bigger.

Everyone keeps mentioning how Liefelds is unable to draw feet but why doesn't people harp more about his inability to draw hands holding stuff?! Majority of the panels where Gunner is shown holding a weapon she only has her hand on the side of the gun! I mean with the way Liefeld seems to love guns I would presume that he has seen them and so would understand how people hold them!

The problem is he doesn't really care about anatomy. Proportions are terrible with things like heads being smaller than fists and biceps. Mostly, he seems to draw the character and then puts the gun in later. Often the gun isn't even pointed in the right direction

Your Captain doesn't remember Girth, but Lowblow, Cutthroat, Hellrazor and Antonio Seghetti(?)/Overlord were all Savage Dragon bad guys. The gag with Cutthroat getting taken out in a couple of seconds is a direct lift from his appearance in the first issue of the '92 Dragon mini. Overlord was set up as the ongoing series' Big Bad, kicking Dragon's ass and impaling him on the spire of a skyscraper, eventually getting shot and killed in another issue when a SWAT team invaded his office (in just a few panels, yet). His whole shtick was that he was a forward-thinking Mafiosi who sealed himself in that power armor so he'd have an edge over the cyborgs and mutants that he employed in place of ordinary goombas. God, I used to read The Savage Dragon religiously, before falling out after the Gang War arc, but I haven't thought about it in any kind of detail for more than twenty years.

Overlord and Lowblow (as well as Hellrazor and Cutthroat) are actually Savage Dragon characters appropriated for this comic during those couple years the Image boys were pretending they had a single universe. Badrock and other Youngblood guys appeared in Savage Dragon a few times too. Dragon arrested Badrock once, it was great. Also amusing: around the time Liefeld got kicked out of Image, there was a big Image crossover with Mars Attacks which ended up having big repercussions for Savage Dragon that would be felt for literal decades. Within Savage Dragon continuity, the official story is that Youngblood all died in the Martian attack, which led to Dragon starting up a new government sponsored superhero team. So a happy ending. By the way, believe it or not but Cutthroat became a really interesting character. What happens to a supervillain when they're too old to keep up? This was Cutthroat's story. But you can't give Liefeld the credit or the blame for that character.

Comic -- usual Liefield bullshit, which is no surprise. Though yes, it is very weird how he draws blood and spit, huh? Ew. . . But I am totally here for more Contest stuff! Although I actually expected you to be beamed away to fight #1 right in the middle of explaining things. Ah well, at least we have a good idea of the variety of characters we'll meet! From dark magical girls, to giant monsters, to dangerous mercenaries, to -- rock piles. And corgis. ...I'm with Harvey, is this just an elaborate practical joke? XD Ah well -- time to get ready for Event Comics Month 2! :)

The Exegete ... ya didn't really have to add the "or interesting" bit there. It's Younblood. NOTHING in it is interesting outside of a curiosity to see the missed opportunities for actually interesting characters, powers, or concepts being flushed away "because Liefeld."

Sure I did, because Lowblow is an Erik Larsen creation. Which isn't any guarantee of being interesting (Savage Dragon had hundreds of disposable mook characters after all) but its certainly possible. Would you believe Cutthroat becomes an interesting character? Not til like 150 issues into the series, but I swear he does. Not Lowblow tho. He's just short.
