Honestly that might have been a genius plan; by asking him to eat it plain first, she lowers the expectations and lets him know what flavour to expect, which leads to him enjoying the vegemite sandwich a lot more. After all, he now knows not to put too much of it onto the bread, he already has an image of what kind of flavour to expect and the combination with bread flips the expectations that were set up before, making it seem really good in comparison.

For anyone wondering, the best desctiption of how Vegemite tastes is this: Imagine ham, on a sandwich, imagine the saltiness the ham adds to the sandwich, now remove the ham and keep that saltiness the ham provided. That's what Vegemite tastes on a toast. It adds a bit of saltiness that makes me feel like I'm eating a ham sandwich without the actual ham flavour. I guess if you don't eat ham, this is a good substitute? Ok, Story time: So basically I'm something of an Australianboo, I got a fascination of the Australian culture. I guess it started when, as a foreigner, I needed to decide what accent I should be practicing towards. It's an interesting thing I think most natives might not consider, but as a foreigner you kinda get a choice of what kind of English speaker you wanna be. It's kinda like an irl character creator. I thought to myself "you know, Australians have a pretty nice slang language" like the slang makes sense to me, MacDonalds, just remove the last part and you get Maccas. Breakfast, remove the last part, you get Breakie. It makes sense. So I decided I'll go with the Australian accent. This decision really didn't change much, a lot of KZbinrs I already watched were Australians, I just had to pay more attention to how they spoke. So now I'm kind of a fan of Australia. Got myself a cowboy hat from Australia (honestly this is a coincidence, I got it as a present long ago, but never wore it) which I wear now. To a point where when I wanted to not wear a hat my own mother told me I looked strange without it, as if I was born wearing it. I swear I don't wear it that often, but a cowboy hat is quite versatile. You get shade from the sun, you get an umbrella in the rain, you got warm hat in the winter. It really works any day, any season. I definitely recommend a cowboy hat, Australian or otherwise. I got other Australian things in my life, but they are so integrated into my life at this point that I can't really think of anything else. The hat, I gotta consciously grab it from the rack, and put it on my head. And the hat is so useful that I think of it often. But the other parts, are just there, so while I remember having a list of things, I honestly cannot remember anything else right now. I'm starting to lose my point, my point is, I was watching a Bae stream, and the conversation went to Vegemite. And at that point I thought to myself "You know, if you're a fan of something, you really should try everything, the good AND the bad" So, my Friend and I (yep, I dragged my friend into this) went to the city for search of Vegemite. Foreign countries often have English themed stores, where they sell all English-speaking items. We found a store that sold Vegemite. We tried it. And it was... meh. Not bad, but not good either. Oh, of course we first nutella'd it, that's just tradition mate. And it was edible, with glasses of milk in between bites (made the milk taste much better). Then I googled to make sure I got as many references as possible to how to make an actual Vegemite sandwich. When we did it correctly (in retrospect it wasn't exactly correct, the toast was too hot and instantly melted the butter which made the vegemite spread unevenly, but close enough), like I said, not bad, but not good enough that I would want to spend that extra step to spread the butter, then spread the vegemite. When I could spread the butter, then slap on a piece of ham, to get the same effect Vegemite provided. Anyway, days went by, and once in a while I would try a vegemite sandwich just to check, is it actually worth the extra time to spread the vegemite? I always came to the same conclusion. Now, last week. I came to my friend's house, he was just waking up, so I went to make breakie for us. I toasted bread, took out the butter and vegemite (oh, as a joke I bought him vegemite on his birthday. The plan was to make the guests eat it, but we kinda forgot). I spread the butter, spread the vegemite, getting a mixed coating of butter and vegemite, kinda looking like nutella. I bite into it. And it was amazing! In my opinion, the problem has always been the bread. I always used the wrong bread. The bread you should use is just regular white sliced bread, the kind you toast. I've used many breads (just whatever was at hand), but never tried just regular sliced bread. Now I actually see the worth of the extra step of adding Vegemite on your toast. Anyway, now I can join in the fun of laughing at people who can't stomach vegemite while I myself love it.

Vegemite is made from leftover brewing yeast, making beer results in a LOT of left over yeast, some gets turned into baking yeast but it has to be processed to remove the bitter hop flavour. Vegemite takes that surplus and mixes it with vegetable stock in an attempt to counter the bitter yeast flavour. So its kinda like eating soup stock or strong miso. Natto is also fermented but its flavours are produced by the yeast and bacteria creating a symbiotic environment. While vegemite is hops + yeast + malt + vegetable stock.
