Larry Bird was voted best college shooter ever by ESPN. 3 consecutive MVPS. First 50-40-90 player ever. Grabbed 10 boards a game with 2 other Center-sized players in on his team. Won 3 consecutive 3-point contests, hitting 11 in a row in the first one. The best left hand shooter/finisher in NBA history. A 90%FT in his peak. Cold-blooded assassin's mentality. Dove for loose balls regardless of physical consequences. In my opinion, no one ever played basketball better than Larry Bird. Many players had athletic advantages over him, but no one could play the game better.

Something MJ DID NOT DO... the NBA had a void to fill after Bird & Magic retired and they filled it. But it took providing a supporting cast. Teammates who would provide the necessary help without outshining the NBA brass’s chosen guy. Pippen is being made out to be crazy these days, but there’s a reason that he’s saying what he’s saying. “It’s much easier to fool a man than it is to convince him that he’s BEEN fooled” Mark Twain

I've said this in many people's reaction videos. There's two things that set Bird apart. One, he would tell the other team exactly what he was going to do and where on the floor he would do it, and they STILL couldn't stop him. And second, he played about half his career through serious injuries, including a chronic back injury he suffered in 1985 while shoveling gravel for his mom. The last couple of years he played he was in so much pain that he couldn't even sit in the chairs on the bench. You can find pics of him laying on the floor alongside the court because it was the only way he was comfortable. Imagine if he was healthy his whole career? Larry Bird in his prime, and really for most of his career, was virtually unguardable.

What James Worthey meant about preferring to guard Jordan over Larry is better articulated by his teammate, Michael Cooper: "You knew if Jordan had the ball, once he gave it up, you were okay with that. Larry could go get offensive rebounds. He could make a great pass. He was the ultimate offensive threat. Anytime he was on the offensive side of the floor you had to defend him. To me, that makes him the best I've ever played against." When guarding Larry, you had to maintain 100% focus and intensity, Larry never took a break and neither could you.

@@Batanuhtanah This argument really only works until you realize that despite Jordan being the only star player on his team he still *BEAT EVERYONE ELSE.* He beat the Showtime, the Badboys, Twin towers. The only team he never beat was Birds Celtics. If youre good enough to whoop Magic and Isiahs teams you should be good enough to beat Birds Celtics. This "He was the only star player" argument doesnt hold up. What it does is showcase it that MJ was a sensational player... what it doesnt do is explain why he lost 0-6 to Bird.

I was a young guy like you when Larry and Magic played. When the play offs hit and finals with Celts and Lakers? Everyone hussled to watch. It was an event. The ultimate competition. Do I think Larry was the best? Or is the best ever? I dont know. I know he brought a spirit and work ethic to the game that has somehow lost now. Pride of the game. To me, he is my favorite. Because of his character mainly. If he lost he didnt blame any other teamate any more than himself. He gave 120% and expected the same from others abilities. Yes, he was tremendously gifted and a joy to watch. But more than that I think he is a good man who cared to do his absolute best for his team and himself. On the back of my phone case it says "Ive got a theory. If you give 100% all of the time, somehow things will work out in the end"- Larry Bird. That sums up more than whether he was the best.

You missed him mentioning that Larry was one steal away from a quadruple double after only three quarters. And don't forget Pat Riley saying "If I need somebody to make a shot to win a game I might pick Jordan. If I need somebody to make a shot to save my life I'd choose Bird." Larry's my number two pick after Jordan. I think Larry was better all around, but you can't justify anybody over Jordan with as many number one spots and records as he has.

Athletic or not, Larry Bird was just fun to watch. His flare was off the charts. You make a good point when you ask who are Bird's teammates. They were solid players, but make no mistake, much of their success was due to Larry's play. He averaged 6.3 assists across his career and 7.6 at his peak. What they didn't really show you here was how often Larry slid over to take a charge. His 1v1 defense was his Achilles Heel, owing to his lack of lower body strength and quickness, but his other attributes more than made up for that one deficit. Bird just knew where people were and where they were going. Just as he knew where his teammate would be when he tossed one of his ridiculous passes, he knew where a driving opponent would be, and if he was close enough, it was almost as though he appeared out of no where to take a charge. Same with filling the passing lanes and grabbing steals, averaging 1.7 per game for the career. It's more really, because his deflections often ended up being steals for one of his teammates...one of the intangibles mentioned in the vid. I truly wonder how good he would have been in today's environment. Better trainers, better medicine. A more athletic Bird would have been a force of nature. He was already posterizing plenty of folks in this video, some with sick reverse dunks. Embarrassing them with his turn around jumpers and step backs. Imagine if he could jump just half a foot higher. A foot! Imagine if his 1v1 defense matched his offense because of how much quicker he was. Oh, then imagine the offense. How many more ankles would he have broken with his step back if he was a half-step quicker? My point is that his skill and basketball IQ made up for anything he was lacking in. He's already a legend, but wow, my mind just boggles at what could have been. And a final word on his athleticism. While he wasn't cut like most that did more strength training, Bird was an avid runner and he cycled some too. So though his legs didn't give him the hops and quickness others had, he had superb endurance. He'd run a mile or two before every single game. You never saw Bird flagged at the end of games. He was still diving for loose balls. So I don't think you can say he's totally unathletic. My two cents. Peace, out!
@mikegoodwin2386
@mikegoodwin2386 3 жыл бұрын
That endurance is a key I think a lot of people miss. I think players who are consistently great at the end of a game are doing that because everyone else is more tired than they are. That has to mean they have better stamina. (Yes, some people just work better under pressure than others. But there's more to it than that.) Bird was The Man at the end of a close game.
@RaymondBCrisp

#1 The Celtics were at the bottom of the NBA with one player change they became contenders, Larry Legend. #2 With 6 seconds on the clock everyone knew who on the Celtics was going to take the shot and therefore he was double and triple teamed but he still made the clutch shot. #3 He was offered a contract with the Globetrotters. That in itself is extraordinary. #4 He played hurt and still was the best. He had a softball injury prior to the NBA that broke his shooting hand and had to have a tryout with the Celtics. He aced it with a broken hand. # 5 He was deadly anywhere on the court. #6 He played every game as if it was his last. #7 His rivalry between him the Celtics and Magic and the Hollywood Lakers saved the NBA. Remember all those clutch shots, people were glued to their TV'S and stadiums were filled. People knew that they were watching history with the Legend and they wanted to be see it personally. Larry Legend changed the world of Basketball forever.

(I really like your reactions and I hope you continue to do a lot more ) Larry's passing game was just as good as Magic's, and they both dominated the 80's in one of the roughest and most talent rich eras. MJ is definately a goat and he dominated the 90's and there was no one to compare him with. I think had he entered the leage at the same time Larry and Magic did it would have been more interesting to see how many titles they would have had. I think we will never know but the young MJ never beat the Celtics in a playoff game but he didn't really have the team to do it at that time. Larry and Magic both would have had more rings but they not kept getting in each others way if Larry had not missed that shot they would have had 4 titles each. MJ once said Larry was by far the best small forward to ever play the game. Charles Barkley said Larry not being athletic was God's way of evening the playing field. Larry played with horrific injuries that would have ended anyone else's career but he kept going. Check out Larry's passing videos and see what you think.

I think if you look at complete players he is in the conversation, people tend to think athleticism is the predominant trait needed for GOAT status, but there are a lot of very gifted athletes that wouldn't make the top 100. Larry Bird used everything he had to bring everything he had to every game and achieved more than just about anyone else could have with the obviously lower athletic skills he had compared to most of the NBA stars at the time he played. He worked harder, thought more, and simply out hustled people. Dennis Rodman is a lot like that, couldn't score wort a darn but out hustled people way bigger than himself and was one of the greatest rebounders for it. I think people overestimate athleticism and underestimate the mental part of the game, there will always be someone stronger, faster, but if you can out think your opponent and position yourself to maximize your strengths and their weaknesses it is a great predictor of success.

He had and accident before he started with the Celtics that destroyed fingers on this shooting hand and never had the same touch a he had before the accident. Imagine what has stats would've been had he not messed up his hand. Her destroyed his back working at this Mother's house. He had to go through all kinds of pregame teqnique to be loose enough to be able to play at all. He never had a game where he was plain free, and yet he was that good. Jordan's Bulls, his rookie year, improved their record from a miserable 27-55 (pre-Jordan) to a less miserable, but not-playoff-worthy, 38-55 (with Jordan). Bird's Celtics, on the other hand, went from a 29-win season, to a league-best, 61-win season... with the addition of Larry Bird. Larry Bird is the GOAT imo. If there was a draft of every player in NBA history and I had the first pick, I'm picking Bird. I say that because he was outstanding at every facet of the game. The reason you don't hear his name more often in the conversation is because he made a concerted effort to get his teammates involved. He could've averaged around 40 ppg but he wasn't selfish unlike some other players. All you have to do is watch him play and listen to what the guys who played with and against him have to say about him.

One of the Pacer players said one day when the team was practicing Larry came down out of his office (he was an executive by then) shot fifteen baskets in a row in street clothes and shoes then went back upstairs without saying a word. To me Bird was the most fun to watch and hear stories about. I am the same age as Bird and watched the NCAA finals between Indiana State and Michigan. I saw many of the games back then. Jordan would say the same thing as Worthy, considering Bird swept MJ TWICE in the first round of the playoffs. 6-0. Ouch. MJ even scored an amazing 63 points in one of those games... and still lost. MJ said himself Bird was the best small forward to ever play the game.

In the beginning, I was hoping you’d keep an open mind about Larry Legend….but it doesn’t look like it. I can tell you right now that there’s NO WAY in Hell I’d ever call MJ the GOAT. NEVER. Larry Legend is MY TRUE GOAT 🐐 To answer your question: Larry is officially listed at 6’9” however he is CLEARLY taller than Magic who is also listed as 6’9”….many players swear he is a legit 6’10”. I tend to agree. I started to sub but I’m rethinking that idea… You haven’t done enuff research. Then you might learn that Larry was founder & 2x member of the 50/40/90 club, the ONLY non-center to have 3 consecutive MVPs, won the 3pt contest all 3 times he entered, had a career average of 24/10/6, and along with Magic Johnson, had the best win percentage in the NBA among the top 60 players. Magic had just 10 more wins. He was the most complete player ever. In the 28 times he faced MJ, he won 17 of those times. In fact, considering all of the greats that faced off against Michael Jordan, Larry Bird is the ONLY player MJ NEVER bested. The ONLY one. Larry Bird had 21 buzzer beater games, and of those, won 18. And on & on….

By MJ, I’m assuming you’re referring to Magic Johnson… Not Michael Jordan. Never heard that they were great friends, but I know that Magic and Larry we’re good friends … of course after they both retired. Larry was not friendly with any of his competitors when he was playing, he didn’t want anything to take away the edge. When Magic Johnson had to retire because of his HIV diagnosis, most of his teammates and people from the NBA avoided him. He will say to this day that Larry Bird was one of the first and only to call him and offer him friendship and support. Decent and true friend.

9:58 Larry was actually 6'10" or so.. Back then they used college heights and weights and never updated them.. Look at bird's retirement ceremony at the end and you see Magic and Legend side by side. You can clearly see that Larry is slightly taller than 6'9" Magic Johnson..

I got Bird and Jordan sharing my top spot, that being said, I refrain from an overall GOAT conversation. There are players I like all over the place, from Russel and West to Luka and KD not to mention everyone in between. Eras varied too greatly, look at how easy it is to rack up certain stats and you begin to realize why some records are only possible in their era.

Great reaction! Just to clarify what Clayton Crowley said at the beginning - He did not say that Bird was the best ever; he was making the case. What he said was he believed that Legend was the "smartest and clutchest of all time". I can't say who the best player of all-time is. But I will say that I've never seen one better than that "hick from French Lick"😎

You should check out the documentary on Bird and Magics rivalry and friendship. Its like an hour twenty minutes so probably no well suited for a reaction xD but you really should watch it in your own time. Its absolutely sensational. Their story is one of the most interesting and, quite frankly, most beautiful stories in sports history. Ive seen it like 4 times and it still almost make me friggin cry. Its one of those things that give you legitimate hope for the world.

LOL Kevin Mchale and Robert Perrish were actually good pro basketball players more than good enough to capitalize on the passing Larry did and made plenty of good shots. Yet as far as them being two guys on the level of Kareem and James Worthy who were with Magic they were not of the same caliber. Yet Larry and the team strategy he had mastered with Mchale and Parrish made their team a scoring machine and able to remain in contention with the Lakers big three. You should look into Kevin Mchale and Robert Perrish, they aren't scrubs at all in spite of you not recognizing their names, they are just not Top name hall of famer talents like Kareem and Worthy. You would at least respect the game Mchale and Perrish had if you saw more on them.

Bird, never stopped playing while on the court, whether or not he had the ball, making cuts, banging in the paint, cutting out to set a screen, or curl out off the screen, that is why Worthy and many others said Bird was the toughest player they ever had to guard. Jordan was amazing to watch and athletic AF when he had the ball…..but once he passed it off to Grant or Pippen, or whoever else, that was it, defender could take a little breather. As a few others have said here already, Bird was the only legend to ever get the better of Jordan, without Jordan getting his revenge. In regular season match ups Bird had 17 wins against Jordan and Jordan only had 11 wins against Bird. In the playoffs, Bird swept Jordan twice….6 wins for Bird ….ZERO wins for Jordan. Jordan even gives Bird credit for where he learned how to trash talk and get into his opponents’ heads. Jordan celebrated the day Bird retired. In one of their first match ups during the regular season, Bulls coach Doug Collins put Jordan on Bird to defend….Bird just used his size and scored 19 straight points on Jordan posting up. Coach Collins then switched up the defense and put Ben Poquette on Bird…..now if you’re asking who Ben Paquette is, Bird was thinking the same thing…and even said to Doug Collins, “Ben Poquette, are you F’ing kidding me???!!!” Bird went on to finish the game with 43 points. You should watch all his trash talking videos, Bird was savage. He made Dr. J. So pissed by just saying how many points he (Bird) had to how many points Dr. J. Had, that in the third quarter, Bird was saying 42 + 6, and Dr. J. Lost his cool and tried to choke out Bird, then had Moses Malone and Barkley hold Bird’s arms while he punched him.

Let me start by saying Larry Bird is one of my favorite players of all time. In my eyes he was the best TEAM player to play the game. He joined a losing celtics team and immediately took them to leagues best record not even Jordan did that, because Jordan had to learn that him scoring 40-45 a game, wont win championships if he doesn't get his teammates going. However, Jordan is the GOAT. Hands down, the conversation may be different if Bird didn't get hurt and have to retire, but injury is a part of the game. My top 5, with only #1 being in order, Jordan, Bird, Kareem, Kobe, Lebron. Jordan was the whole package, he had everything the rest of them had, and more. In my eyes no one is close in this conversation. Jordan dominated as a guard in a time when the game was dominated by bigs, which is so impressive. His athleticism, defense, and competitive nature propelled him to 6 championships in 6 tries and 2-3 peats, which is something not even a stacked Golden State team could do ONCE let alone twice.

When the Celtics played the Hawks.....thats the 60 point game Bird played! That's the game when you see the opposing team going nuts.... high fiving each other on the bench and the 1 guy was laughing so hard he falls off the bench! LOL. The were each fined by the coach.....one of the guys said it was the best $100 seat he ever had in his life! And the 1 guy meant what he said..... about he would rather play against Jordan than Bird! LOL. He's also Not the first player to say that! Lol.

Thanks for the reaction. Yes I think Larry is the GOAT. Check out more of his videos. Its, not just skill, flare, athleticism, but the mindset and work ethic. Then consider everything Larry had going against him Then consider the drive he had. Also consider he gave the ball up a lot. Recall who he had to play against etc. Peace be with you.

Larry Bird was 6'10" before his knee surgeries and 6'9" after. Larry Bird was the BEST all round player the league ever seen before or since. His shooting was unraveled. Bird basically saved the league when he came to it. It was circling the drain until Bird arrived.

You actually never heard of Robert Parish and Kevin McHale bruh? You cannot be serious! Bird, McHale and Parish are the best starting big three of all time. All in the hall of fame. Parish played more NBA games than any player in history. And you said you didn't believe James Worthy when he said he'd much rather guard Jordan than Bird? What's wrong with you man? Why would he lie about that? You don't know much about the NBA man. And you missed most of what they were saying because all you did was yap throughout the whole video!
