I don't think they only have 3 spots for men and 3 for women in director. Last year they had at least 4 men nominated if I'm not mistaken.

You’re right. The bafta site summary says gender parity in round 1. For round 2 nominations director it’s the top 2 regardless of gender and then jury pick the other 4.

In general I don't think these nominations will have THAT MUCH influence on Oscar nominations morning. Olivia Colman missed many times, Mulligan for Promising young woman too, Macbeth too etc. They nominated Davis for Woman King, Gaga, etc and that resulted in 0 nominations. After their new rules few years ago they became kinda irrelevant and they doo have influence but more in terms of who is winning not who is getting nominated.

I don't think gender parity applies to the nomination stage (round 2) in the director category. It only applies to the longlist stage (round 1) AFAICT

It doesn’t. I’ve checked bafta website. It’s top 2 regardless of gender. Jury then votes for other 4.

I’m surprised Bradley Cooper got nominated over Martin Scorsese, Yorgos Lanthimos and Greta Gerwig for Best Director at the BAFTAs. I thought he’s dead in director after he wasn’t nominated at the DGA. I thought he had a higher chance of getting nominated at DGA than BAFTA.

You can have BOTH merits AND diverse actors at the same time. It is entirley possible that the BEST performance is not from a white actor.

For best picture at Bafta they should drop “Barbie” to accomodate “Anatomy of a fall” and “The zone of interest”. “Barbie” ia a good movie, but, come on, let’s not compare with cinema at its highest level.

Wait for director is it really that you MUST vote for three men and then three women directors from the long list or is it how I thought it was: half of the long list was male and half were female and then whatever happens happens. Like it could be 5 male nominees and 1 female, 4 female and 2 male nominees etc. Carey was snubbed for Promising Young Women sure but let's not forget that was the first year of the jury system and they had it where only the top 2 got in for sure and the jury decided the remaining 4 nominees. Since then they have curtailed the juries power. Now it is top 3 get in and 3 get in from the jury iirc. And I can see in future years the juries power get even more diminished with say only 1 or 2 people being jury saves. I think 2 is the right amount that a jury should get to nominate anyways. Mulligan absolutely got robbed of that BAFTA for Promising Young Woman. Maybe if she had won it she would have won the Oscar that she should also have won!
