Today we have Smt. Gayathri Saikrishna with us, who is a Carnatic singer. I am happy to announce that She will be with us in the upcoming episode.
The raga that we are going to see today is Bageshri raga. Bageshri is a Hindustani classical raga. It is said to have been first sung by Tansen, the celebrated court singer of the Emperor Akbar in the sixteenth century. In carnatic music, this raga found widespread popularity in only in 20th century. This raga is derived from 22nd Melakarta raga - Karaharapriya.

There many popular compositions in Bageshri. Thirupugazh by Arunagirinadhar, “Eru mayil eri” - a kriti, Lalgudi Jayaraman Sir’s Thillana, “Kanden kanden seethaiyai” a kriti by Arunachala kavirayar, these songs are well known to all. 2 other popular compositions are "Sagara shayana Vibho by M. D. Ramanthan and "Madhura madhura meenakshi" by Swami Dayananda Saraswathi.
Bageshri raga is widely used in padams, viruttams, bhajans, shlokas, tukdaas and ragamalikas. Definitely, a very soothing raga.
Bageshri has been widely used in film songs across all eras.
When we look into early period, “Kalaiye en” song composed by T. chalapathi rao is prettyy famous. Beautiful song !!
“Nilave ennidam” and “mayakkum maalai pozhudhae”, both by MSV-Ramamurty duo are famous as well.
Further recent songs were “koluse koluse” by Chandrabose Sir, Ilayaraja Sir’s “Mazhai varuthu”. Most recently from the movie Vinnaithaandi varuvaaya is “Aaromale” a beautiful composition in Bageshri by Ar Rehman sir, sung by Shreya Goshal. Not just that, There are quite a few Hindi songs in Bageshri from eearly period. “aaja kab se kadi hoon”, “na bole na bole” and many more. I have jus named a couple of famous ones.
Each raga will have an emotion associated to it.
Bageshri is meant to depict the Karuna Rasa and Viraha Rasa. That is the reason, this raga has been used as a medium to express love in film music by composers. Be it the emotion of yearning between separated lovers or the feelings of newly found love, Bageshri has been used as a medium by several composers to emote them well.
This raga is more suited to sing late in the evening or night.
Bageshri is a raga that relaxes the senses and calms the mind. Those who use music as a therapy, have found that this raga has ability to reduce hypertension and diabetes.
We have seen several interesting facts about Bageshri so far. I think its definitely time to do a mashup in this raga.
