Charukesi Ragam in teaching Episode

Charukesi,the 26th Melakartha Rāgam in the 72 melakartha rāgam system of Carnatic music. We call it as Tarangini in Dikshithar school of Carnatic music. In today's episode we will see all the nuances of the Raga explained in detail. In fact this raga has been used widely in our Tamil cinema. "Aadal kalaiye Devan"from the movie "Sri Raghavendra" and "Udhaya Udhaya" from the movie "Udhaya" are very famous.

The most famous song in Charukesi is 'Manmatha Leelaiyay vendraar undo' by M.K.Thyagaraja Bagavathar in the1944 Tamil Film, Haridas. Chemmangudi Srinivasa Iyer is said to have remarked then, that this somewhat rarely sung Ragam had become so popular by this song that it is being sung by everyone, who hardly knows any music at all! Thus this song is the first Film song that made this Ragam popular for musicians and Laymen alike, thanks to the Music composer, G.Ramanathan!
