As a 53 year old Gen Xer who divorced myself from hip hop decades ago because of the direction rap was going, I was oblivious to what was happening in the culture. The exception was what I would come across in new articles. 2024 was the year I reengaged out of happenstance and curiosity. Imagine my bewilderment and astonishment when I started seeing comments about not liking Kendrick because he doesn’t drop often enough. During my day (childhood and adulthood), artist across multiple genres released new albums generally every 2-4 years. During their absence, we listened to and enjoyed the music they had already given us. NO ONE was hating nor disliking their favorite artist or group because they released music every 2-4 years. We patiently waited for new music. Sometimes new music never came if the group dissolved or the solo artist no longer was on the label. It’s been 30+ years and I still love those artists even with zero new music from most of them. We didn’t have streaming back then. Could streaming be the culprit of that mentality? I am genuinely confused. 😅

Drake been a star since he came out. He has always had the big push from record labels so him going independent is unlikely to happen. I’m sure he enjoys the luxury of having a machine back him. On the flip side of it he has an established fan base so if he decided to go the independent route he would still have support he would just have to do more leg work because he wouldn’t have the machine backing him. If I was in his shoes I would take a year or two of and come back. Back in the days that’s what rappers did in between albums they took breaks. Drake never really had a break since he been an artist let someone else shine and come back with some new material.
