It's a combo. Rory's point was that yes a lot of huge artists had that huge marketing push behind them. But there were also a bunch of artists that also had that huge marketing push that failed or didn't catch. A Girl Like Me went Platinum and had 3 of Riri’s biggest hits. We Ride and Unfaithful are two of my personal faves. A Girl Like Me gave Rihanna her first number 1 single. With that being said Esso has a point if we work on his supporting details.
@christianjames929 ай бұрын
Rhianna didn't become a megastar until Good Girl Gone Bad and Umbrella dropped. That's what took her from a good artist to a megastar. Also remember this is a different time. This is the early to mid 2000s. Pop budgets were outrageously high cause you had to pay top dollar for writers and producers. Unfaithful alone probably cost the label millions just to pay Neyo and Stargate to do that record. So even if she eventually went platinum the return was razor thin. It's not like now where the label can pay writers peanuts and producers peanuts and just get hit records for pennies on the dollar.

I think there's something deeper and darker involved, but I'm not going to go there. Listen I agree with both of these gentlemen's points but I'm from an even older generation than them and I saw the industry do it with Usher Raymond. In between his first album that didn't really blow, and "My Way"with Jermaine , Usher did about two albums with a producer that I won't name out of loyalty to him. It was not going to work. The Usher you see now was not the Usher that was in childhood and adolescence, they had to develop him. They saw something in him, but it took a lot of work. He was not a Disney kid and who was a natural talent and raised to be a star. The same thing with Beyonce. It took years of development. The difference with Usher was that they were going to make sure that he blew and I don't know why. I think the same could be said for Rihanna. 🤔

So Rihanna Christina Milian Teairra Mari and Fefe Dobson were all at a Def Jam at one time trying to break thru. Christina had the most potential to crossover due to her being in movies at the time but she couldn’t make the songs to help her push thru and she passed on a few songs that turned into hits so when her album eventually came out and sold less than 3k for the opening week, she was immediately dropped from the label. Teairra was the one out of all the girls to have a urban song that was a moderate success and was good enough to get even Kanye to be on the remix but she couldn’t follow up that song to save her live so she failed. Fefe had the rocker chick aesthetic down but the music didn’t connect. Now RiRi had moderate success with Pon de Replay & SOS getting pop radio play but she didn’t have a look at the time that grabbed anyone’s attention or any real sizzle that’s why they had to create fake stories of her having affairs wit Jay. So they changed her look to a more rocker chick aesthetic a la Fefe and gave her the songs that Christina passed up on and threw Jay on her single for the urban radio play to match with her pop radio play and it worked and she took off. Her talent tho is what has kept her around for this long tho.
