My father had a 1949 Olds with the Hydra-Matic transmission which he bought new. They were hard to get at that time with long waiting lists. He was moved to the front of the list by the dealership because he was a wounded veteran who was unable to use a clutch pedal due to his injury. He appreciated the dealers consideration and bought new Olds from them for years afterwards.

@@ronaldhellengreen7063 The dealership was owned by two Jewish men. They understood the importance of the fight against the NAZIs and appreciated the costs to our young soldiers. My father was wounded in November of 1944 on the day after his 19th birthday. His best friend was KIA nearby in the Vosges two days later. My father said he was just doing his job. The Oldsmobile dealer was not always able to offer my father a great deal, but would usually tell him when to return when they expected to be able to offer a better deal. When my father was doing a lot of traveling for his job, he bought a new Oldsmobile every two years.

A 350 Olds Rocket engine would be my preferred choice for this project. The one I had would pass just about anything but a gas station. It had a Turbo 350 automatic transmission behind it and would launch my Cutless to 65 mph locked in low gear. I once put four tenths of a mile on the odometer in less than a hundred yards. It concealed a country store in tire smoke for a few minutes and the store keeper said his smoke detectors didn't quit screaming for over half an hour. He asked me to not do that again and I was buying new tires for the rear end a few days later.

I can tell you all about that hood latch....caught one to the back of the skull no less than 20 times, but you will learn eventually when backing out from under the hood remember that latch! My wife’s x-step dad gave her a ‘49 Olds when she was 15 and her mother had drag raced it in west Texas when my wife was a toddler. The car had been sitting for many years and being the boyfriend I got to do a tremendous amount of work to the car to get it road worthy and fix a lot of issues as they popped up one by one. It had the original engine but bored out to some where around 303 cubic inches and had a two barrel carb on it. That car would smoke the tires and would fly on the top end. I had a ‘65 Fastback with a 289 & 750 Holley carb geared 4.56 and the Olds would outrun it. I was a muscle car guy and didn’t think much of it, but my dad and his friends said it was the fastest car on the rode in it’s day and the first car that would outrun it was a ‘57 Chevy with a powerpac 283. I outran everything around town with it and blew the doors off a 455 Olds from red light to red light. The 455 guy told me well this 455 doesn’t run good until it’s on the hiway. I said funny, neither does this, let’s go.....we went out on interstate 10 and took off from about 50 mph....by the time I hit 100 mph I was 20 car lengths ahead of him and I stayed in it to about 120 mph....I looked back and the dude took an exit an went back to town embarrassed in front of his buddies. That transmission had 4 forward gears and low was really low and high was like an overdrive. Had lots of fun with my wife in that car when we were teenagers! Brings back memories...Thanks!

Good evening, everybody!!!!!! Firstly, thankful to God that Rick pulled through Covid!!!!!!! That’s one COOL ride he’s got there, especially with the adjustable air ride suspension: so THAT’S what was under the car cover on last Friday’s live, which I only saw the last 5 minutes of!!!! Gotta watch that, I’m SLIPPING lol. I’m sure though, once Nick irons out all the little wrinkles, this old Olds will be cruising and perusing the Montreal streets. Great week to you guys!!!!

A nice flashy colored tennis ball on the hood latch will save chunks missing from your scalp. I call it a "Head-Saver". Got one for the Barracuda for safety at the cruise-ins. There's always someone sticking their head under the hood when it's open. That Olds will be a cool ride when it's done and you've given it the finishing touches. We don't know what's coming up next week but we know it could be anything. This 1949 Olds is about as good as it gets, and as Nick says, "its so simple of a car."

I absolutely love Rick's 49! When I was a kid in the early 70s there was a local gear head that was an OLDS fanatic. He built a 49 that had a blown 455 in it. It was on the cover of HOT ROD magazine int the middle 70s. It was black with flames. It was a WICKED car that made me an OLDS fan. My first really cool car was a 1970 442. I bought it in 73. Can't wait to see more of yours. Hey Nick, you just made my day by featuring Rick's 49, THANKS Nick!

I ran headers on SBC, SBF, Ford 460's for years without one problem.......no loosening, no burn spark plug wires, zero interference with steering box, etc. Of course, I took the time to route the wires away from the headers, only bought headers with a thick plate where they bolted to the head, used locking header bolts, etc. I had a set on a '76 1/2 ton Ford van that I ran for the 23 years that I had the vehicle and only retorqued the bolts once(when they were new and had about 200 miles on them), and they never leaked, burned out, interfered with any other component, etc in all that time. I sold the van about ten years ago and ran into the fella that bought the van about 10 years ago and he said that he never has had a bit of problem with them. The headers were cheap Patriot headers made in Mexico and were not ceramic coated. I used multi-layered manifold gaskets. I've heard horror stories about headers but have never experienced a problem. I used the Ford van as a daily driver for much of that time and towed a big, heavy camper a lot of the time I had it. Several times, pulling the camper in the Rockies I would stop just because I thought the engine needed a rest (it didn't) and the headers were cherry-red for 6-8 inches out of the head.....NO PROBLEMS. I've heard your diatribe several times concerning headers but it does not support my experience. I never miss your program if I can and I've learned tons of things from you and thanks. I have the original exhaust manifolds for the 460 and they hold the garaged doors open on windy days.
@todddenio3200
@todddenio3200 2 жыл бұрын
If you have never had any issues with headers, you are one of the fortunate very few. No matter what brand they are 99.995% of headers at some point will have issues with the most common being leaking followed by problems with firmest. To have gone as long as yours did without so much as a leak is possibly a record for trouble free longevity.
@tomnekuda3818
@tomnekuda3818 2 жыл бұрын
@@todddenio3200 I certainly did not expect it to turn out that way when I put the engines together with headers on them after hearing the horror stories. One thing that helped was that the cars had more long trips than short and that kept the exhaust dry and didn't give it a chance to rust out. Our ranch was 30 miles from town and that probably helped to a large degree.

Had one, always loved the little clock in the center top of the dash. Mine got a 1955 324 punched out with triple carbs! And of course the dual range hydro magic.

Cool Olds! Can't wait to see Nick perform his magic and see it rolling down the road. Looking around the shop, I'm not seeing Eugenes Charger 500. I watch every week; did I miss something?

That's my first car......mine was a 394 ci 4 speed Hydramatic. She had BIG 4 hole AFB. I bought her in California in 1969 while I was in the Marines. She was run over by a dump truck that lost it's brakes 11 years later. I feel really bad when ever I think of her.
