i think Rembrandt are the best bang for the buck for any starter set. later you can buy singles of the other other brands, instead of costly sets,

Thank you for this very interesting information. But what about "Schmincke-Pastels"...?

Thanks Marla for the recommendations. I have an 80 set of Sennelier, I find them so so soft and easy to break. This was proved when the box fell down at the same time as my full coffee cup. Coffee mixed with pigment all over the floor. Now the sticks are pretty much 1/16th size :) The Paris 120 set is a good deal but again the extra soft nature of them i find awkward. I think I may try a small set of Unisons as I hear this are not so soft. Rembrandt was my first brand and actually like them. Anyway, thanks for all your tutorials and beautiful art.

Thank you for responding. I’ll try the papers you’ve suggested. Have you ever tried Wallis sanded paper? It’s so gritty that i usually sand off a layer. I’m trying pastel board now and it’s not very good. Have you tried it? Thanks, Cynthia

This was great information. I'm a beginner in pastels but, having painted with oils and acrylics for many years, I understand the value of good materials. I wish I had seen your video before purchasing my first pastels, as I would have saved a lot of money. Your suggestions make so much sense - Thank you!

Sennelier- SEN-el-yay I wonder if you could add to the description the spelling of each brand of pastels that you have mentioned.

Prices have gone up since this video was made lol. Found the Sennelier set on sale for $175. A lot better than $197. The Ludwig set will have to wait unfortunately, but I did get a couple individual sticks that I think I will use that don't look like they're in the Paris set (and 2 eggplant sticks). When you add in some paper it gets closer to $500. I am a firm believer that if you're serious about anything, you need to give yourself every advantage by buying good quality equipment. While a good mechanic never blames his tools, he will be limited to the level his tools will take him (or her).

The paper wrapped Sennelier pastels are extra soft and the boxed ones are soft. That is the difference. I have both and use both, just differently.

I'm excited. Dickblick was having a great deal on Prismacolor nupastels, so I got the 48 set and a few extra colors open stock for under $50. I felt that was a steal. Got the blenders, workable fixatifs and all that already. Just waiting on my pastels to get here, lol. Nice little video with some good information on the different brands.

Thanks for the video Marla, very informative. Yes I see your point depending how heavy you are with pastels, would influence your choice of brands to purchase, but also your budget the other factor

IMO most people dont want to invest that much when they are first starting, unless they have money to piss away, lol! I always recomend starting with Rembrandts 45 stick set (15 full sticks/30 half sticks) 50$...and the faber castell galdfaber studio 72 half stick set.20$.....but good informative video anyways....my favorite pastel is blue earth...they have such a nice range of values! Also Schmincke, that is THE softest pastel in the world, period...

Mungyo Non Toxic Square Chalk, Soft Pastel, 64 Pack, Assorted Colors (B441R078-7003A) These products are non-toxic (AP Seal) This product has AP mark at the front. Information of Certificated AP Mark: : $7.29 del Amazon The colors are nice. For me I use very few colors...try to mix what I can...also have some basic Pan pastels. I'm a beginner...often use pastel on my watercolors. I love Marla's videos and learn so much. She is a professional...I'm not.

OMG ! I was hoping for a recommendation in the $100.00 range! It has been over 25 years since I have used pastels I had to get rid of them because my wife was allergic. Now I have a separate studio space and have thought about getting back into them. Maybe I am just suffering sticker shock but $400 is a lot of money. Umm you might say “sin nil lee ayy” those French just have to be difficult! Thank you for your recommendations, many things to think about.

What do think of pan pastels? I have all the brands you mention but I find that the really soft ones produce too much dust that makes me cough. Do you use fixatives on your final layers?
@PaintingLessonsWithMarla5 жыл бұрын
Hi Holly, I don't use Pan pastels very much. I like them for some underpainting techniques. I do use fixative for the final layers before I frame a piece. Thanks for watching!

what do you use for blending? I feel like im spending alot of tortillions to match each color group and I can't keep track of them. ive heard some people use those dollar store makeup sponges but I can't friggin find them anywhere lol.
@PaintingLessonsWithMarla6 жыл бұрын
Hi Tommy, I actually don't do a whole lot of blending other than as I'm layering one pastel over another. But!!! If you go the a drug store, in the cosmetics section you should be able to find packages of foam wedges which are usually used for applying foundation makeup. These work great!

What pastel papers do you prefer? Archival, I’m sure but what brands? I have Canson, Kitty Wallis sanded. Some other lightly sanded papers. I like Canson for portraits but the more I learn from you I realize I depend too much on drawing rather than learning how to paint well with pastels. Painting with pastels is what trying to learn..
